Dothan Gun Club's Dan Mitchell

Dan Mitchell passed away yesterday, 28 September 2024, after a long illness.

 

I remember when Dan first started shooting.  He was already a successful hair stylist in town and was looking for an outdoors hobby.  One thing led to another and he went from newbie shooter to the founder/owner of the Dothan Gun Club.  He took an undeveloped piece of land and developed it into a premier shooting facility, driving a lot of the earth-moving equipment himself.  After he got sick, he sold the property and it has since become the Talon Range of Dothan.

 

He was the Match Director and Host of the Alabama USPSA Championships for several years.  One thing I can say about his tenure as MD:  He had a vision of what he wanted to put on the ground.  He had the drive to make it happen.  He'd defend his vision and opinion vigorously.  If you found what you considered to be a "flaw", he'd state that the "freestyle" aspect of USPSA allows the shooter to solve the problem without a lot of restrictions.  As much as it irritated me that the time, can't fault him....
