How, Where and When...............

should you grease a 650 ?

(You would think that the 650 Manual would tell, but I can't find it!)

Lacking a Dillon Maintenance kit;

What should I use?

Some one mentioned Ballistol (which I have)

Isn't that too "oily" ? (Powder flakes sticking to it...............)

renaissance needs to know

I own some terribly smelly, thick wonder grease called "Tetra Lube" that I do not recomend for 1911 rails but I do use to lube the mainshaft of the 650. Though it would be smart to take off the old blackened grease 1st, I just keep adding a little Tetra every 5K to 10K rounds; I also add a little to the polymer ramp/cam that advances the shelplate.

Underside of the shellplate gets a drylube like Birchwoodcasey moly or Remington drylube.

I copied this from my post on the 550B Greas fittings. This is what I use on my 650. Dillon stresses the use of SAE30 Motor oil to lube the mainshaft.

This is from Dillons Manual:

Maintenance

Lubrication: Operating circumstances will

dictate the frequency of required lubrication.

It is highly recommended that the XL

650 be cleaned and lubed after every 3000

rounds of operation. Use oil or wheel bearing

grease. Never use penetrating lubricants,

aerosol sprays, or solvent type lubes,

such as WD-40 or Break Free.

Lubrication Points:

Shellplate bolt – Grease.

Main Shaft Lubrication –

Use only 30 wt. motor oil. Once again, do

not use penetrating lubricants, aerosol

sprays, or solvent type lubricants.

This adapter fits over a standard grease gun nozzle. A local parts store should be able to get one for you.

I'd get a small grease gun, like the ones they use for boat trailers and lube the press with a Multi-purpose grease such as Valvoline p/n 608. I originally had the Dillon Maint. kit but the lube in the plastic syringe was too hard to inject. This setup works good.

In addition to the above, I use a dry lube on all the plastic/metal interfaces - primer arm, casefeed camming pin, case insert slide, indexer block. I use silicone or teflon, which you can get cheap at an auto parts store along with your brake cleaner

Coupla squirts on the surfaces, let it dry - smooth as silk, no powder sticking

Calhunter's quote is from page 45 of the manual (v 6.1) - the wonders of the search feature in adobe :D
