arblacksmith
How do I disassemble and clean an external extractor on a 1911?
EricW
At least on my S&W, the pin drives out from top to bottom. It's a real bitcheroo to get out. Someone here suggested a "pin starter" from Brownell's which is basically a modified center punch. After that, it ought to be obvious. If you do any tuning on your extractor, be EXTREMELY careful about where you polish. The external extractors (on the S&W at least) seem to rely on digging into the case to prevent it from slipping down during extraction, which unfortunately also translates into roughness chambering a round. It's a really fine line. I think that the external extractor is much tougher to tune than an internal one.
Zak Smith
My Dan Wession Patriot has an external extractor. I broke the first one due to crud building up under it. I stoned the second one's top and bottom surfaces before installing it to ensure there was minimal friction and enough clearance, and it's run 100% since then (8000+ rounds).
