Rob Tompkins
Doubt all you want, but it is true. I have shot 855, 193, hand loads with 69gr SMK pushing 2800+fps. the 855 does the least amount of depressions in the steel. So to conserve my steel targets I should use greentip. That's interesting. I wondered why the military even developed 855 when 193 apparently has better penetration. If you havent seen it, much can be answered here at the ammo oracle: http://ammo.ar15.com/ As I understand it, its very much a function of range. The M193 is a lighter 55grsin FMJ bullet at higher velocity. At closer ranges it will out perform M855 w/ the SS109 62 grain steel core FMJ bullet. At some range, the M855 will be at a higher velocity as it will slow down slower than the M193. The M855 is "improved" only at longer ranges. I am the MD for the local 3-gun outlaw match. While M855 may or may not do more damage to the AR500 steel at 50-150 yards, its a moot point. People bring guns in other chamberings and try to bring no kidding AP milsurp ammo. Can't have that so its a blanket "no steel core" ammo rule.
Religious Shooter
I'm pretty sure MGM also bans Greentip. I'm not sure why you guys appear to be say that M193 is such a fast a round. I've chronoed some 193 rounds and I've seen my friend chrono at a Nationals with 193. It doesn't generate out of this world velocity. http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=213 If you take a look at the above link the 193's average for a: 20" 3183 fps 16" 3078 fps 855 averages: 20" 3078 16" 2963 It's fairly common to drive a 55 grain FMJBT to 3100-3200 with reloads that are used for 3Gun on the long range targets. That's about what 193 averages.

Religious Shooter
Sure, some people to. If you take a look at another thread KellyN is pushing 55's@3100 fps with his Limited set-up. If you talk to people who use 55's as their long range round (and they are pretty good at 3 gun) they generally aren't doing 2900-3000.

Pat I did a search on "55" and took a look. Latest entry KurtM => 3200fps. You posted on a couple of those threads. Are you saying you personally see the people around you are loading to 2900-3000? On the posts here I'm not really seeing 2900-3000 as the average for long range 55's. Even you posted that you worked up a load around 3100 fps. Personally I aim for 3150-3250 with 55's with a 20". 3050-3150 with a 16/18". For close range 55's I load to functioning+. Which usually translates to 2700-2800 fps. I am going on the chrono results from myself and a few of my friends up here. We swap load data and try different things. With 25.5 grains of H335 I am getting 2853 from my 18 inch Noveske. With my 52 grain Hornaday load with 26.3 grains of H335 I am getting just over 3000 fps. I got up to 3100 fps with some Sierra 52 grain SMK's with 26.4 grains of H335.
