Petrov
Hey folks I have 4k of 160 gr RN bullets on the way from bayou bullets for my 38spl. I will be using the pistol in USPSA production. Right now I am down to two choices Solo1000 and W231. I know that solo has a low burn temp, but I don't have any load data for it. Will solo 1000 make minor PF +5 or so without pressure problems or should I stick with w231? Does W231 play nice with cast bullets?
reptoid
Both powders should work well at minor velocities and both work well with lead bullets. My old manual shows 3.2-3.6 grs. of Solo 1000 for a 158 lead bullet with 3.6 giving 884 fps from a 6" barrel. My Speer manual shows 3.8-4.3 grs. of 231 for the same bullet with 3.8=783fps and 4.3=863fps from 6" barrel. You will need 781fps to 812fps for PF=125-130. In my experience Solo will be softer at same velocity. As for accuracy, both should be acceptable but group testing in your revolver is the only way to find the best for it.
