New press

Recommended Posts

Well, I have a Hornaday lnl with all the fix-ins, 45, 40, 9 mm ,380, 223. I'm really thinking of selling and going to a Dillon either a 650 or the 1050. Any body own the lnl or the the other 2 Dillon's. What are the pros and cons between the Dillon's to the lnl? I'm just getting tired of all the constant small adjustments. I know its rather a broad question but I've read a lot and just wondered what i can do. Any help would be outstanding.

So what are the problems?

I sold a 550 to get the LnL with a casefeeder. I had some issues but tey are resolved pretty easily. The one area that the LnL beats the 650 is with the case slider setup. It captures the base of the case so it can't tip, it also is easier to adjust. BUT, once you get the LnL adjusted you actually never adjust it again. I also like how the LnL has the casefeeder slider on the left not the right so if you do have a issue it is super easy to fix. To me that is the only place the LnL needs a little extra TLC then the Dillon.

Well it almost always primers or that whole Assembly. Now you have to understand the lnl is not new to me as I am closing in on 100,000 rounds. Its just when i switch calibers or from large to small primers, I can't just switch and load its adjustment after adjustment get rolling bang lock up take apart again clean then back to reloading bang stop again. I loaded 1000 yesterday had 5 stoppages about 1/2 hour total time. These were all my 9mm load I have become a expert on the feel of the press but load quite a bit on it and just want to sit down crank them out clean up be done. Maybe I am asking to much maybe the Dillon owners have the same problems I don't know thats why I am here I guess.

I have a pic of my bench and setup in the non dillion section now. I don't know how to cut and paste the link. Sorry

Let me take a second to thank all the above posters it means a lot to me with your suggestions!

Couple suggestions.

1) Call Hornady. Get some new primer parts. They are free and will probably solve the issue.

2) Loosen the blast sheild on the primer tube about 1 turn.

3) I am still confused about what you are "adusting" on the primer setup. It's a pretty basic setup. Not much to adjust. And onced adjusted should not be going out of adjustment.

I have a box of new parts.

The adjustments are once the ram locks up on the cam wire any movement bends the primer cam wire and then to get it up or down it now has a bend and it wont move the primer slide far enough back so I either have to bend that one or take the press apart to put the new wire on. i have worn out maybe 10 primer seaters to. its just always something i guess not big deals but always something.

The press has been rebuilt by hornaday also, as i was having timing issues and the run out on the ram was causing this.

How did they handle the rebuild? Did they charge you for it? I was thinking you were having issues with the wire. Thats a PITA to replace as you have to remove the press from the bench. Here is the thing. It probably wasn't doing this when new? You have a decent amount of ammo made on the machine. So something is out of wack. Don't know what. I would replace the wire, loosen the blast sheild a little and replace the shuttle. I have heard of this before and Hornady recommended loosening the blast sheild. I guess it is some vibration thing that causes the issue. Also makes me wonder if the new bench is contributing to this as bench's can change the way a press works.

I do have it loose.

I agree with the new bench but this is why a built a new one the problems on the old one were worse. actually this one is bolted to the wall and has no deflection.

Shipping charges but thats it. I was thinking of buying another to see if its me or the machine as when new it was pretty darn good but as it has aged the problems have set in. When its on a roll I can get quite a few rounds out of her I just am getting tired of the stops and every time i know what it is. just sometimes frustrating

Divot is a easy fix. Get a hold of a set of automotive feeler gauges. Use a file to file a straight line in the end so you can snap off a piece the same size as the bottom of the primer punch nut. JB weld that in place over the divot. The reason I am specific about "feeler gauges" is because they are very tough steel, don't dent easy at all. Best material for the job.
