Crushed Primers on 650

Recommended Posts

Greetings!

I've been reloading for about two years. I've loaded about 5K rounds of .45 without too many problems and recently decided to switch to 9mm.

As part of my switchover, I swapped out the primer assembly parts (complete new assembly, purchased from Brian). After setting up the machine, I noticed that I could only load 10-12 rounds before I'd crush primers. I'd tear the machine down and check everything - referring to the messages here concerning crushed primers. Same thing - load 10-12 round and then crushed primers.

Out of options, I checking the machine alignment and noticed a lot of play between the Rotary Primer Disk (RPD) and the primer. I checked and the RPD is clearly marked S. However, I pulled my large RPD and lined the two of them up. Sure enough, they were the same except for the S and L markings. Fortunately, I had a small RPD from my original machine purchase and once installed it solved the problem.

I know that Dillon is a top notch company and errors occur. I also know that if I call, they'll ship out a replacement RPD with no questions.

My question is this: Has this ever happened to anyone before?

Thanks,

ND

You are lucky you didn't pop one.

I'm sure you'll have a new one on the way as soon as you call/email. Sounds like a problem created when the run of "L" was changed to "S" and there was one in process.

What do you mean by crushed? Smashed flat or somewhat flat. Smeared?

Is the shell plate snugged down and the shell plate bolt lock screw tight?

Pat

Crushed - big indentation in the middle. Center popped out. How bad depends on when I realized I wasn't seating the primer.

I went through all the steps and checks before I discovered the mismarked plate.

I know. It never occurred to me that the plate would be mismarked.

I called Dillon this week - of course, no problems and a new one is on the way. They told me to just toss the old one.
