WTK: effect of front sight on free float barrel

If your front sight is mounted on the foreend does the free float barrel help? It seem to me that it the sight is on the tube and the tube moves in relation to the barrel (by contact with something or by sling tension), the free float factor is nullified. Or is there some other value?

IMO, you are absolutely right. It would be better to have the front sight directly connected to the barrel in some way (gas block, or directly behind comp/flash hider), rather than on the free float forearm. For this reason, I am somewhat surprised at the huge popularity of forearm mounted backup iron sights....but there again, I guess the term 'backup' says it all (in the rare event a scope fails, something better than nothing).
