bigbrowndog
Now how far do you set your steel targets for long range? I would let the target size, determine target distance for you, as a good rule a 4 moa target is a good doable shot, provided of course that it can be seen by using a good contrasting backer that is at least 3 times as large as the target and is placed directly behind the target. So if your largest piece of rifle steel is a 10” circle, then 250yds. should be your longest distance. A 4 moa target is not difficult from a bench or prone, even with iron sights. But place the competitor in another position and you have taken them out of their comfort zone and made the shot more challenging and you’ve done it without increasing the distance. Try it next time you are at the range, an 8” target shot at twice from sitting, kneeling, and standing at 200 yds. How many hits do you get, and in what time? Too often we here in the U.S. shoot our rifles from a bench, prone or up close and fast with no regard for learning other positions. So subtlety forcing those positions and using intermediate distances will challenge all but the highly practiced. Using the 4 moa rule also keeps the distances reasonable and avoids having a carbine match become a precision rifle match. Other target types to follow,.............thanks
