5-56mm Posted March 27, 2010 Share Posted March 27, 2010 I have an FN SLP MK1. I cant get the sights to zero at 50 with Win bulk pack slugs. It shoots about 10-12 inches high at 50. Rear sight is maxed out, and I dont want to have to hold low for good hits at 50. I don't think I have ever had to shoot a stage where slug targets were farther than 60 yards or so. My question is, what replacement sight height do I need? The factory sight is .312 high, and replacement choices are .343, .375, and .410. I know it would seem easier to try other slugs, but the Winchester bulk packs are cheap, and easy to find. How much of a change in sight height would lower POI 10-12 inches? I have tried the Federal Truball reduced recoil and the Winchester Ranger reduced recoil - both hit high. If the sight radius is about 20" then every .030" increase in front sight height should lower the point of impact by 2.7" @ 50 yds. There are a few websites that address this sort of calculation. Are your groups tight with the current choke? I know you don't want to purchase a different brand of slugs, but the most common method is gathering multiple brands of slugs and testing them with varying chokes. I just purchased and SLP and patterned it for slugs. I received drastically different results from Remington Reduced Recoil slugs when shot through modified and improved cylinder chokes. Good luck! SPR1 Posted March 30, 2010 Share Posted March 30, 2010 I have the same problem, but did find that Fed Tactical slugs hit relatively close to POA. I need to do some patterning and group testing to see if I really want to change the sight. I do tend to shoot high with it at closer ranges with shot, but, that could be a combination of how the gun fits me (not as intuitively as the Benelli) and where the fiber optic bead usually ends up within the groove in the cantilever rail. ninefan Posted April 2, 2010 Share Posted April 2, 2010 Just thought I'd let you guys know that I installed a new Williams .406 height sight on my SLP. Note that when I removed the old sight it wanted to be drifted out from right to left (instead of the standard left to right). I installed the new sight from right to left as one would normally go in. The new sight fit well after a bit of sanding/filing. benson2255 Posted April 13, 2010 Share Posted April 13, 2010 In front of the front sight blade there is a sight adjustment. It dosnt look like much, just a serrated plastic pin, but use the supplied allan wrench in it and turn clockwise and it will bring up the front sight. It needs to go way up, i was pretty pissed when i was shooting slugs for the first time before we figgured that out!(just this past weekend). ninefan Posted June 16, 2010 Share Posted June 16, 2010 Yes... Support the front sight base itself, *not* the barrel. This might require you to be a bit creative. I have a brownells bench block that worked fine for this. Use a brass punch (or a punch with a brass tip at least) to bang it out. If you start banging a bit on one side and it isn't moving, flip it over and try knocking it out the other direction. My original sight came out from right-to-left. You might try that first. When you put the new one back in, make sure you start it from the side that starts easiest. My new sight wanted to go in from right-to-left (this is traditional, but opposite of the original sight if you think about it). If it won't go in very far, take it out and file or sand just a bit off of the bottom of the sight and try again. Once you can get it in about halfway with decent tapping you should be able to drive it in the rest of the way. Just make sure that you don't take so much off that it will move in the dovetail under recoil. Once again, support the sight base and not the barrel when you go to drive the new sight in. It's a fairly easy operation - you will be fine. Just support that front sight base so you don't knock it off of the barrel! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
