In short order, I need some reliable intel on 147g  FMJ, 9mm major loads.

    Thanks.

115, 121 or 124 with any of those powders (except CFE) will make a great shooting open gun

Forget 147 with open.  124 grn is the heaviest.  147 being soft in production does not equate to an Open gun.  The first problem, 147 bullets are longer and sit deeper in the case.  Deeper equates to more pressure (possibly over-pressure especially in a 9 case) at open feet per second requirements.  Using less powder for 147 also means less gas to work the comp correctly.

  3. I have a couple thousand of the 122 Fn and several have not been perfect, but shot ok.  The one think I'd like ACME to do is increase the coat thickness. The coating seems to scratch off easily.

I even shot the 122 FN in my open gun for a test.  The accuracy with Autocomp was quite acceptable, but smoke and shit in comp was not.  The price is great though.  :-)

Inspected my gun as I do before every match, just finished baltic storm, and got our largest level 3 comin up. starting tomorrow!  This is when I found it

I got a tiny crack, about 5-6mm long so far I can see, from first locking lug, going down the length of the gun, not the usual one I've seen which goes from side to side  or crooked.

Will it last the 260 rounds? Is it a bad idea? It's really the opposite way of the load so its a bit weird, but the gun has "stripes" going down the tritop on top, it seems to have started in one of thoose if I was to guess, I can't visibly see it.

    Pictures?  TRI-TOP'D slide.............

Atlas Gunworks Chaos seems to be the new hot trend.  Not a long track record so time will tell but as mentioned before, if you shoot open a lot a cracked slide is inevitable.  I'm ordering my Chaos soon.

I disagree with "inevitable".   I know guys been shooting the same gun forever.  They wear out barrels and never see cracked slides.  The number one reason for cracked slides is tri-topping the slide.  Tri-topping removes to much metal at the ejection port and that is where most cracks start.  Ask gun smith who have been making open guns for 10 years or more.

  6. Open guns are high maintenance.  Does not matter who makes it.  Well, some guns are higher maintenance than others.  You have to realize you are pushing these guns to the max and then some.

The 2011 platform is the best way to go.  Hi-Power Jack gave you some excellent advise.  Brazos has a good deal on a brand new 38 Super Trubor and you would have money for ammo.  38 Super is easy to reload and is very dependable.

If you want a higher end gun...There are  numerous smith's more than willing to make you a gun.  Expect 6 months to a year wait.

This is why I didn't comment on velocity.

There are so many factors at play (barrels, rifling, bore size, etc) that I cannot say that PD bullets will be "faster" across the board.

Due to the smaller percentage of Zn, the jacket material is softer, but that does not necessarily directly correlate into faster velocities.

True, but "in the same barrel test"  PD are faster than MG because PD seal better. Anytime gas can escape around the bullet, FPS falls off.  I have no affiliation with PD.  Just a long time Open shooter who has tested a lot bullets and powders.

Been reading about 115's being more accurate because of the higher velocity.  Is anyone using them?  If so how is recoil being that you have to push them at 1150 fps to make minor.  Any trouble knocking down steel?  Widner's has the hornady 115 hap bullets on sale for 300 bucks for 3000.  Thinking about trying them but don't want to drop that much cash if they don't work.  I'll be using a g34 with a kkm, and a Barsto barrel. Currently running MG's cmj and their hp.

PD 115s are great and cost less than MG.  Used MG for years.  Accuracy has many factors...barrel twist, load.  115s do not recoil any more than 124s, 115s have a snap instead of a push.  Many folks like 115s because the sights return faster.

No one here locally, at least none that am aware of, owns a CK Limited in 9mm.

I took it up with the builder, or at least one of them, and was told to change the recoil spring.

How does not complaining when a complaint exists solve any problems, and how in the world would I know anyone here who owns a CK?

    If you really want help

    1) What loads are you using?

    2) Is the gun feeding correctly?

    3) you mentioned ejected brass coming straight back ? Can be recoil spring or just light loads.....

What was you intended purpose buying a 9 2011--3 gun? or just shooting Limited minor ?

It is what it is, I guess.

I will say, however, after Sarge quoted chapter and verse to me I had to look around and make sure I hadn't suddenly been whisked off to North Korea, or someplace thereabouts.

Sounds like you bought something without test driving.  In our sport, just about every gun maker gun's can be found at local or state matches.  Everybody I know would be happy to a let an interested shooter look at their guns and even shoot em once or twice.  Seek the help of someone who shoot's limited and get their help to rule out any operator error and then have a conversation with your builder.  Give him facts, not opinions.

If you have a complaint with a new gun..take it up with the builder.  This forum shy's away from complaining about builders. PM folks and your not in the open forum then.

Not bashing you either, just trying to help like most of us do.

So, open guns with all their fancy stuff and how "easy" they are to make hits with and shoot..

Funny thing about them, if you don't turn the optic on before the buzzer goes off, makes your stage go in the toilet at a blistering rate of speed lol! Anyone else ever done this?

Also one that I see A LOT, mags not seated all the way . Seat a mag , bang, mag falls out..... They pick up magazine, THEN try to shoot WITHOUT racking a round in......?? I can't count how many times I've seen this... Let's hear what you've done or seen along these lines

It's not just open.  A lot of limited shooters do it also.  You cram 29 rounds in a open mag, 21 in a limited mag, and how often do you practice loading an empty start--rarely.  It takes extra force to seat those mags.  I learned to download one round to enable mag to seat without using gorilla force.  A moving reload is faster than dropping mag in sand and retrieving.....

Iam looking for supercomp data loaded with autocomp and 115 gr Montana golds ?? Starting load "OAL" and how many grains ?? Thanks for any info

Is the barrel ported or not? Makes a huge difference.   There are better powders than WAC for 38.   I know a lot of folks like WAC for 9 Major with 121/124 bullets.

I have had two slides on two guns crack on me this year, they are about a year and half old and round count about 6,000 each maybe. I was using HS-6 8.8gr with MG 115 jhp @ 1.160 which ran about 170 power factor in my guns. A couple of weeks ago changed to WAC 7.5gr with MG 115jhp @ 1.160 and was shocked at the increase in accuracy and the more predictable dot tracking. I am now thinking that the HS-6 was too much gas for my CKarms guns, the felt recoil difference is slight between the two and scope stays cleaner longer with WAC. I suspect the cause of the cracked slides was ether too little comp clearance and/or slide material not the loads.

Were the slides tri-topped?  I would bet, most ejection port cracks are due to tri-topping.  The only cracked slide I've had was a tri-topped slide cut way to deep.

I don't buy that powder is the culprit.  I do agree that "loads" contribute.  If you make 170 PF with no barrel holes and then add several popple holes, you have to increase the amount of powder to maintain the 170 PF.  What was once a true 170 is now a 180 or more PF gun.  You have increased chamber pressure in the hunt for a "flatter" shooting gun.  Let's face it--We abuse Open guns.  The old saying "Pay to play".

I've shot a few hundred rounds of HS-6 loads now and really like them with 115's - best dot tracking I've seen with my gun so far.

The gun was a little dirtier after the HS-6 session (compared to my WAC or 3N38 loads), but it didn't seem detrimental to the gun. Was like a super fine mist or soot with no chunks that I found. I'd like cleaner, but so far this seems quite acceptable.

Until I get the barrel throated properly for longer OAL's, I will probably stick with HS-6 & 115's.

I'll give the 3N38 another try when I can load longer.

Trying to keep those loads under 1.145 is a chore (where bullet contacts throat in my gun) - the bullets tend to push back out a little from the compressed charge.

Even with 3n38's relatively forgiving nature, I do not want to risk the pressure of bullets starting out pressed into the throat.

Not to hijack the thread, but what bullet are you using?  I'm a long time open shooter and HS-6 is a great forgiving powder.  I would not be shooting open HS-6 loads at < 1.145.  Have you chrono'd that load? 1.168 is recommended.  I've never had a barrel that would not run 115-124s at 1.168 and most would go longer (1.168 works for STI mags with spacers)

I understand the theory behind them, and I 'm wondering if there is any real benefit to using them on all future builds. I've run standard extractors, externals, HD EGW and Aftec and have never had a failure to extract, or a broken extractor. Is using them just a convenience thing, or insurance, or is there a real long term benefit other than probably never having to fit and blend a new one.

Once a gun (firing pin stop) is fit to an AFTEC, you never need to revisit a smith.  They don't need bending or other fitting. The little springs wear out-replace them.  The extractor wears out (they all will at some point) just replace it with a new one.  That is the benefit.

Using grams 11 coil spring that came with their follower. This stuff is all new out of the box minus the tube. I don't know why this spring and follower won't work. I even tried it with the stock Sti pad and also Dawson plus one pad. Looks like it will be going back and I will get the tti spring and follower. I will call grams tomorrow and see what they say first.

Did you get a 9 follower?   I run stock STI big sticks and 140s with grams 9 follower and plastic spacer.  No problems with 9 major.   What OAL are you using?

Sarge> No two guns are identical. One may simply be a little more finicky than the other. For example, if the feed ramp depth is different between the two guns it can dramatically change how good/bad a certain length of ammo feeds in it. A good test that I do to see if my ammo OAL is set properly for the feed ramp depth is to black out the feed ramp with a sharpie marker. Then shoot 10 - 15 rounds and see where the sharpy marker is scuffed off of the feed ramp. If its hitting in the middle or just above the middle then the OAL is right where it should be. If its being scuffed below the mid point then the ammo is too short. Do this test with both of your guns using the same ammo to see if the scuff marks are happening at the same height on the feed ramp.

    Excellent info.

  18. What's wrong with Precision Delta's? Great bullets, in my view, every bit as good as MG, but a bit faster.

I used MG for years in my open gun. Yes, they had excellent accuracy and they were mostly always available. MG prices kept going through the roof.

New player in the game. Precision Delta. PD's new HPs in 115 and 124 are better!. They seal the gases better, extremely accurate, available all the time, and they cost less.

I do not work for PD nor do I gain anything from PD by posting.
