welcome to uspsa.. imo find a group or coach that can help guide you and squad with them... and you'll have more fun.

get to match an hour early with your group and walk stages together and learn how they stage plan.
then ask the better shooters about how they visualize the stage during pasting, and once in the hole.

i'de also suggest iron sights for a bit.. work on splits and acceptable sight picture. lots of bill drills .. lots

My sincerest apologies for taking so long to respond. I am doing all of these things, with the exception of running iron sights. My eyesight is not what it used to be. Hence, embracing CO.

I also have a national caliber shooter thats been kind enough to review my vids and one or two felonies of the many to work on.

It feels softer than my Tanfo Stock 2. Is it me or it this trigger good to go? I can’t believe nothing needs to changed, race ready!

The trigger is light years ahead of a regular x5. And while I shot so stinking slow today that my squad was able to catch a nappy, the trigger was NOT the problem. It was the shooter!

Im going to go ahead and upgrade the trigger but only because I’m horribly spoiled with my Glock trigger.

So yes, I’ll happily shoot this bone stock as is until I’m ready to send it for trigger work.

    just a fantastic gun.

  3. Well, after a couple heart attacks for trying to

make weight in CO and mag leng length after adding tti +5’s, I’m squared away and legal.

I only have 300 rounds through the gun but I’m shooting it in tomorrow’s local match. Love the feel and balance so far.

Ill take the 34/5 in case something weird happens.

Hey! Not true! I have very little foam, and no froth at all!!! 😃 (OK, maybe a little bit!)

Hehe... I do own a P226 SAO Legion that I love, but could care less about collecting. My Legion is a well-used, well-maintained tool. I am very excited about this new X5, although it has nothing to do with the Legion label however.

You sir, are an anomaly. I’ve read more complaints about the lack of that emblem than all other bad-mouthing combined. It’s mind boggling to me but I’m not a collector either.

I run a 34/5.  That said, I grew up on steel guns. The extra weight is intriguing as my only knock against polymer guns is how light they are.

I can’t wait until mine gets here. Looking forward to taking it for a spin!

  5. Saturday I finally shot my very first local USPSA match. My goals were.......

A - Don’t shoot myself or anyone else. SAFETY!

    B - Dont get disqualified.

    C - Have fun!

D - Try not to be last.

Happy to say that I accomplished all 4. I also had an absolute blast.

Starting and likely staying in CO.  I’m running a Glock 34 Gen 5 series 1 with a Delta Point Pro. Double Diamond tungsten guide rod and a 13 pound ismi spring. Swapped from a Johnny Glocks trigger to a DK Customs Comp Elite trigger. Trigger tuned to gun, breaking at an average of 2.85 pounds. The DK trigger and work is pricey but worth every single penny.

I am am going to test one more gun. Waiting on the new Sig Sauer P320 X5 Legion to arrive. Frame module is made of planet infused with Tungsten powder. Weight is equivalent to a steel gun. If it doesn’t work for me, I’m sticking with the Glock.

Now that I have shaken the first match stank off, it’s time to get to work.

    Performance was crappy as

expected. 46th out of 51 overall. Shot at 43 percent and change.

I got so hung up on sight picture and accuracy. Happy with accuracy but even in planning to all but walk transitions, I was so incredibly slow that you can fall asleep watch a stage vid.

My stage planning felt great for first event. I’m a lefty so I planned target order and reload points in a way that made sense to me.  While I drifted mentally at times, I experienced no target order confusion.

Scoring paper only I was on par with shooters in top 10. But they are shooting my times divided by 2!

i have been been dry firing regularly but am formalizing the process today. Working out of Stoeger’s Dryfire Reloaded.

While Im in the gym six days a week and in pretty good shape for being 56, my agility /foot mobility is absolute crap. My trainer is going to help me adjust my lift schedule to add agility fast twitch muscle fiber work. I’ll never be fast but I know I’m capable of dramatic improvement.

I finally got approved to shoot at my home range so I can work on live fire drills.

I’ll make a second post with goals and plan of attack.

Here’s a vid link of a stage. It’s my starting point.

I disagree, because this was the BEST thing to happen. Not only was this a lesson for the shooter but ALSO for the child. As a parent, I never pass up an opportunity at a life lesson. I think it was great that the child was there and learned a very valuable lesson, even at the expense of the father. If I were the father, I would be upset about having my day end early but I would be more proud and happy if I saw that my son or daughter learned from the experience.

Oh I completely agree. I meant heart-breaking. I thought it was awesome that he explained it with heart.

  7. I shot my first uspsa match yesterday. I was super worried about 180 violations. I’m left handed so I shoot stages in reverse whenever possible.

Our RO’s were awesome yesterday. They were warm and kind and spent a lot of time helping shooters avoid potential problems BEFORE they manifested themselves.

We we had a classier with two

shooting boxes at 45 degrees with reloads between boxes. The RO mentioned to be very careful. It worried me bad enough that I actually dumped mag and reloaded in box before the weak side transition.

Sadly, we had a guy pushing hard for

time that broke 180 by ton. The RO really felt bad about the DQ but it wasn’t close at all. The shooter was both an adult and a gentleman about it. He even asked the RO

    permission to stay me help

paste and reset steel. Just a class act.

The worst was listening to him explain to his young  why he got DQ’d and was no longer shooting.  He owned it and told him “because Dad broke a very serious safety rule.”

  8. I shot my first USPSA event yesterday.

I was really hung up on accuracy. I  should have started shooting earlier. For a first event (shooting CO), I ended up 46th of 51 shooters. Interestingly though, I was 7th if you look at pure target scoring. And the top shooters were shooting 2.5 times faster than I was.

Accuracy without speed didn’t do crap to help me.

I’m shooting my second event in two weeks. Since I’m having fun learning, I’m going to all but do the opposite of my first match and push hard for speed at the expense of some

accuracy. I’ll then have a better feel and comparison as I try to find my own cadence. And hopefully one that doesn’t put the squad to sleep.

Go shoot. Have fun! Learn all you can. Dry fire drills at home. If your area is anything like mine, even the big boys and girl will kill themselves to help you and cheer you on.

I got hands on some Legion grips. Just amazingly heavy. Didn't get a chance to shoot them yet, but I they will be a nice performance enhancement.

I am hoping to have my new x5 Legion next week, providing the distributor receives.

Really looking forward to compare it

    to my 34/5.

That’s interesting. Anyone else heard details on this?

I’ve  seen this same comment in lots of places but never any additional commentary.

I’m definitely interested. That said, still willing (and have) invested in the x5 Legion. After all, I’ll need to buy new guns next year too. 😂

Any update as to when the new x-five legion will ship?

I don’t think anyone really knows.

    Ive read July 1st.

Then a guy claiming to be in the know says they made a fixed number for R&D and Armory so that they can put it through the ringer. Once complete, they will bless Production to ship to distributors August.

I wish Sig would just own it and spit it out.

  12. Yes they do. I originally got my Double Diamond Tungsten Rod with a 15 # ismi flat spring. It was listed as being specifically for Gen 5. I don’t have a Gen 4 to compare to but could have sworn I read that springs for Gen 5 are a little longer because of the way the Gen 5 cycles and locks up. Again I THOUGHT I read this.

It's my understanding that springs are sometimes shorter or longer depending on wieght and manufacturer. I've seen heavier springs be shorter than lighter ones by the same company even when both were new.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

FWIW, I run the same set up and it's been 💯!

    Thank you!

  14. Thank you! I’m not a machinist nor a mechanical engineer. From my ignorant perspective, it seems that identical wire is used and then coil number varies depending on spring weight.

Shooting my first Steel Challenge today and breaking the First Commandment of match shooting.

“Thou shalt not make changes prior to a match without testing.

OK. Let’s be an idiot and try anyway.

  15. Need some help from the vets here please. Running a Double Diamond Tungsten Rod and 15# ISMI Spring in my 34/5.

I called and ordered a 13# spring and was clear that it was for a Gen 5. The 13 arrived and is shorter by a little over a 1/4 inch.

Is this a gen 4 spring or did ISMI just clip a couple of coils to spec 13 #’s?

    Thanks in advance.

  16. Well, I was shopping for second 34 Gen 5 as a back up. But instead I went down to my favorite gun shop and told them I wanted one of these. I may or may not have been foaming and frothing at the mouth.  Distributors didn't even have them as of this evening. At least I got promised the first one to show up.

I’ll either love it and kick the 34 to curb, or hate it, sell it, and be on my way.

    Let the waiting begin!

  17. The order for me so far has been.....

    1) Attended a local match. It was awesome. Everyone chatted me up, answered all my questions. Got dragged out repeatedly during stage walk thrus with explanations.

    2) took a Level ll practical pistol class. I wanted to test gear, drill safety and safe handling skills in to my brain, and learn fundamentals.

    3) Joined a smaller range that is very active with USPSA, IDPA, 3 Gun, and Steel challenge. There are 6 outdoor ranges within an hour’s drive but only 2 of them have a healthy action shooting contingency with regular matches.

    4) first match is the the first weekend in July. I’ll walk it, pay attention to the process, and work diligently on not getting DQ’d for being an idiot.

All this said, I could have just easily shot my first match, then done the other stuff.match participants are some of the nicest folks I have ever met. They want you to have fun.

For the other novices reading this, just know that a lot of us didn’t have this mindset and you do not necessarily have to. Thinking about shooting USPSA? Just go. Go to a match! Don’t let any worry about practice or being good hold you back.

Everyone there remembers how horrid they were the very first time. We’ll help you out! :D

This mindset will change remarkably by the end of the year. Competition is hard on your ammo budget and this is why all of us reload. It isn’t uncommon to burn through 500+ rounds in a practice session at the range by yourself.

My last advanced competition class was 3,800 rounds in three days.

Skip the widgets. A minus connector, then polish the internals, add sights, grip tape, 13lb recoil spring, and a lighter striker spring. Done.

Almost every M/GM glock shooter I know uses this recipe, and there’s a reason IMO.

    Don’t buy toys.

    Practice a lot with a stock-ish gun.

That’ll work for now. Stick with it if it keeps you from shooting shot #2 without a sight picture and a proper trigger press. But don’t fall into the trap of firing on that cadence no matter what. If your sights aren’t aligned, disregard your tempo trick and fix them. Then resume.

In the future your cadence on different targets will vary: watch the veteran shooters. you’ll learn to rip two into a close open target, then how to take the required time to ensure two quality hits on a 15+ yd headshot target from watching them.

Either learn to flip the gun in your hand to reach the button, or install an extended one: all aftermarket super big releases are now legal in carry optics and production. Install whatever aftermarket triggers and slide releases and mag buttons you like.

    Grammar. 🙄😂

    Thank you for the responses.

I did not mean to imply that a class was necessary. Just because it was important to me doesn’t mean it matters to anyone else. I attempted to convey that when I talked about the support the five new shooters received at our local match. They all did great!

I understand about cadence. We did do a drill where we had near, medium and far targets. And yes cadence did change.

I donUnderstand that you must have a sight picture prior to pulling the trigger. Because of the order of targets, the drill showed me how to drive the gun by swinging more quickly to set up for the next target, to maintain cadence.

As for ‘grammer’ , I never should have post d this without sucking down my second cup of coffee. 😂
