  1. Placed an order for 1000 125gr CN with Black Bullets on 5/17, received the bullets on 5/20.  I've never bought from them before, but I'm definitely impressed with the shipping speed (and the fact that they had the bullets in stock).  I've got a larger order with another outfit that I've been waiting on for about two months now....

  2. I'm late to the conversation, but wondering if anyone has bought, or more to the point, received any primers from Zinc Point Manufacturing.  At $0.14 each the price is still high, but they seem to be the cheapest of the outfits that are taking orders and claiming they can actually deliver (2-3 weeks).  Feel free to PM me if you've had a bad experience.  I'm not interested in slamming anyone publicly, just getting desperate.

Down to my last 1000 primers, tapping into my endless supply of dryfire ammo....

  3. I currently have a Stealth Handgun Hanger safe that has hangers for three pistols.  My problems are:

    a) I have more than three pistols I would like easy access to (I'm keeping the overflow in my rifle cabinet at the moment)

    b) Now that I have two guns set up for Carry Optics, I'm having a heck of a time getting my pistols in and out of the safe because they are so tall.

I've been searching all over the internet looking for something suitable and reasonable (i.e. not 200 lbs., not $500+, not a simple office safe).  I just need something that will hold at least five pistols (including my two CO pistols) and keep out kids and unmotivated thieves.   Biometric a plus, but not necessary.   Any advice?

    Thanks!

  4. You're welcome!  Rounding off the sharp points on the rear feed lips seems to be the real key.  I didn't even take off as much metal as the video shows, and it still made a big difference.  Before I took a file to those points, the follower on each mag would get hung up right there and it would take a little force to make it pop all the way up.  I also smoothed out the places on the followers that were getting gouged by the feed lips, and I did the rest of the things in the video.  Ran several mags worth of CCI Clean .22 through the pistol on Sunday without a hiccup, whereas before I having about two feeding issues per mag.

I think zzt is onto something concerning this type of ammo, though, since the Mini Mags worked almost flawlessly before I did anything to the mags.  Maybe the polymer coating creates a little more drag compared to bullets that are copper coated and/or lubed.  As I recall, even the ones with copper coating have some sort of wax on them.

  5. Thanks for all the input!  I ended up going with a Ruger Mk IV Lite.   It ran great the first time I took it out, with maybe one stovepipe.  I was shooting CCI Mini Mags.  Then I put a Volquartzen kit in it.  I had numerous stovepipes and failures to feed when I shot it the second time using CCI Clean .22 (polymer coated).  I'm hoping it's just an ammo problem and not a problem with the kit, because it really does make a huge difference in the trigger pull.

  6. I've got a son who is almost 12, but he's small for his age (he could easily pass for 10).  I'd like to get him into Steel Challenge, so I'm looking for recommendations for an appropriate pistol.  My first thought is to get a Ruger Mk IV Lite and look for some really thin grips.  That's the only .22 pistol I have any direct experience with, although I don't own one.  Any suggestions appreciated!

    Thanks,

  7. OP here.  TLR-1s arrived yesterday and I've got it mounted to my SP-01.  I really like it!  Nicely placed controls, just the right amount of light for indoors.  It's wider than I thought it would be, but that's not a problem for a home defense pistol.  Two thumbs up from me!

  8. I see Primary Arms has Streamlight products on sale for the next 20 hours or so, and I've been thinking of getting a light for my SP-01 home-defense pistol.  I've never had a light on a gun before, though, so I don't know what to look for.   Can anyone give my some guidance?  Is Streamlight a good brand?  Is there something better for a similar price?

    Thanks!

  9. OK, thanks, IVC!  I hold the gun straight up and down, and I'm at the point where I can shoot pretty accurately if I take my time and don't fight the recoil at all.  Now I need to speed it up, and issues of grip (like thumb placement/pressure) are becoming more important.

  10. I shoot a CZ Shadow 2 with thin safeties on both side.  Shooting freestyle, I keep my strong hand thumb next to the safety, more or less where the "ledge" would be if I had that kind of safety.  My questions is, when shooting SHO/WHO, where should I put my thumb?  Should I keep it on/next to the safety, or lay it on the frame below the safety?  Pressure against the frame, or no pressure?

My current thinking is to put the thumb against the frame below the safety, mainly because when shooting WHO I tend to rub the slide if I put the thumb on the safety.  This doesn't seem to be a problem with SHO since I have a lot more practice putting the thumb in just the right place.  Still, with either hand, the gun seems to be slightly more stable if I put some pressure against the frame below the safety.   Just looking for some input before I put a bunch more reps into doing it this way.

    Thanks,

  11. I've had the thought of building a 9mm AR pistol for home defense, because a) I like to build things and b) the world seems to be getting stupider by the day.  So a couple of questions:

    1) Is this even a good idea?  Or would you stick with .223/300 BLK/12 gauge shotgun, etc.?  I already have an AR-15 and several 9mm pistols, but I was thinking that a (preferably suppressed) 9mm AR pistol would be an ideal way to defend the castle without blowing out my eardrums or risking over-penetration.  But I know that PCCs as a whole don't have the best reputation for reliability....

    2) If what I'm contemplating doesn't seem ridiculous, what would be the must-have components?  Quarter Circle 10 and New Frontier Armory are the only brands I've looked into, except for passing out when I saw the price of JP receivers.

I'll just leave it at that for now.

    Thanks!

  12. Went to the range again yesterday.  Worked mainly on Doubles, around 250 rounds, shooting at 3" circles at 15 yards.  Payed close attention to my grip, especially locking my wrists, and worked on shot calling.  I noticed a bad tendency for the second shot in each pair to go low, and usually to the left, so that I would end up with only four or five shots in the circle.  Gripping as hard as possible with my left hand basically solved that problem, but it's hard to keep doing that without wearing out my forearm.  I hope it's just a matter of pushing too hard against the recoil with my right hand, but I'll have to experiment further.

Also took slo-mo video of myself shooting doubles.  Sure enough, most of the time the second shot in each pair was going low, and a couple of times the gun dipped really low.  Grip seemed pretty good, though--the gun wasn't moving around in my hands.

  13. Practiced at the range yesterday.

Group shooting went very well, usually keeping 4 out of 5 shots in the head box A-zone at 15 yards (freestyle), 10 yards (SHO), and 7 yards (WHO).  Time to move back a little.

"Doubles" and "Practical Accuracy" drills were a learning experience.  Tried doing Doubles at 7 yards using 3" circles, as Ben has been recommending lately.  Didn't use the timer, just watched the sights and tried to pull the trigger on the second shot when the sights were back on target.  I have some work to do.  The horizontal variation was not terrible, but there was a lot of vertical stringing, especially upward.  I gained a new appreciation for how much information the sights give me, and noticed that I tend to pull the trigger before the front sight has fully returned into the notch.  Prior to this I have seen the front sight bobbing around out there, but I haven't been seeing the sights with the level of detail that will allow me to precisely time each shot.  This is going to take a while....

Tried shooting the classifier "High Standards" again.  I'm getting better at keeping all the SHO/WHO shots on the targets, but I have a lot of work to do.  I get flustered when I'm on the timer, and when I go to grip the pistol SHO/WHO after a reload I usually flub it pretty badly and end up slinging shots all over the place because of my poor grip coupled with anxiety about my poor grip.  I need to work on this in dry fire, especially transferring the gun to my weak hand after a reload.  That's the part of my live-fire performance that is downright comical.
