  1. Phil,

The Match Director is Russ Houston this year and he's more than likely in the phone book out there. But you probably will have better luck contacting Rudy Dufour at NRA, depending upon your question. Rudy should be able to answer whatever you need to know, since he's the Coordinator for the match and it's probably a local call for you. Look forward to seeing you at the Cup again.

  2. Dave,

I think if you'll count again, you'll find that in the 4 Bianchi events there are 40 draws total. You're correct on the plates, and there are also 8 on the barricades, but the Mover and Practical each have 12 draws. FWIW

  3. Driver,

The intent of the Rules Committee was for those changes to only apply to Open Class guns............Didn't turn out that way in the end though! Unless they come out with a "Match Director's Bulletin" at the Cup, they stand as written. For local matches they stand also............as written.

  4. Steve,

Count on you to wade into the middle of a dog fight! ;) The new gun sounds promising, but if you have a comp on that thing, stay away from lead bullets. They'll load up the comp in no time and you'll be scraping lead out every night at the Cup. Glad you finally got an Open shootin' iron!

  5. Greg,

Welcome to the forum! It's about time we heard from some of the top metallic shooters! And from that score last year, you obviously know your stuff (as if I didn't already know that) .

Hope to see you at some of our matches. We start on April 9th this year, so we'll have 2 before the Cup. May 14th is the 2nd one.

    See ya'

  6. Steve,

MJ hit it on the head. There is some parallax involved when you look through the upper edge of those lenses, as opposed to standing looking through the centers. If it's legal, you may want to get one of those prone pads that Warren Moore makes that are mentioned elsewhere on here (same guy that makes the Stick-Shift).

The rollover-prone thing that Kimber Kid mentioned is another possibility, since you'll not be using so much of the lens periphery, and more towards the center.

Another thought.........try putting the temples of the glasses lower, maybe as far as having them below your ears under the muffs to change the lens angle more towards vertical for prone shooting if you are lying straight-on to the target........just an idea.

Hope you find the answer in time to get in some practice with it before the Cup.

  7. George,

You're right........it used to be 288. They changed it a couple years back to 144 to make it easier for new shooters to get their first classification card. It still takes 288 to get re-classified to a higher rating after that initial 144.

  8. Steve,

Well, I finally got my "Cup" forms today and you did a fine job of copying it verbatim! Now for the discrepancies......

Section C is there to add the Open Modified guns, and is the only place that the rule about safeties shows up. Does that mean that the grip safeties can be pinned or otherwise made non-functional on Open and Metallic Sight guns? Also there's no mention that they can't touch the barricade, only that no wings are allowed. Guess they just jam a slick-side shroud up there with some skateboard tape on it and fire away, huh?

Sections E & F.......to paraphrase.......say that we can now go prone at 25 on Practical & Plates..........there's no mention of the intent that this should only apply to Open class shooters, so I guess the Open Modified and Metallic Sight shooters can go prone too?

    What a screwup!

    Alan~^~ <_<

  9. Steve,

I can't agree that the changes affect everyone the same. There has been NO OFFICIAL NOTICE of the rule changes for the next Cup, and if not for this forum, I'd have no idea that I need to get a new grip safety fitted before the Cup this year! After attending the so-called "shooter's meeting" last year, I'd also be considering practice with no wings, and no prone at 25 yds.

So for the shooters who haven't been notified, it's not "the same for everyone". There are always new shooters there, even some who have not shot the events at all somewhere else before they arrive, so how are the to know in time to meet all the qualifications? Martin has a good point. IDPA only has rule changes every 2 years, SASS rule changes are limited for Cowboy shooters (I'm not sure exactly how) but to have new rules to abide by every year is ridiculous!

Some have claimed that the changes "level the playing field". I say PHOOEY! If that's the case, try telling the High-Power shooters that they can't use slings or shooting coats anymore, that levels the field if I ever heard it!

    (Soap box mode off!)

  10. This close to "Yankeeland" where, for us anyway, it's cold, I can only average a day a week at the range. I try for between 200-400 per week, so that should jive with your goal of 1200/month. It's not so much the round-count as the goal-setting and making that you accomplish. Pick one event, or one stage of an event and work on the weak spots in your shooting. About all I'll be doing for a while are the Practical & Plates with some side practice on the Barricades & Mover. It ain't the quantity so much as the quality, but you knew that, didn't you? ;)

  11. The American Rifleman article, along with the one in Shooting Sports "raved" about having "attracted an unusually large number of competitors from overseas. More than 40 shooters representing eight nations journeyed to Columbia for this...." SO WHAT! Last year there were "over 40" foreign shooters" from either 8 or 9 countries and it wasn't a "World Shoot"!

Then there was the meniton of "An uncommon new side match--- The Invitational Event..." First of all it wasn't "new". I've been to 6 of the last 7 Cups, and it's been there as a side match every time! Whoever writes those articles doesn't know beans about the match.

A year or 2 back, the writer gave the course of fire for the mover, and had the wrong info in the article. Someone just reads the rule book, gets a few names to "drop" in the article, and prints whatever they think is pertinent, with no personal experience or knowledge of what really went on there.

As usual, no respect for AP shooters!

To quote someone we all know and love????????NOT

    "Enough said"

  12. I just got one of the saddest e-mails in my life. John Cameron, last year's Senior winner at the Cup, has gone back to NZ after several years living and working here in the States. The latest is that he has pancreatic cancer and about 3 months to live. It has spread to lymph nodes and he's decided to forego chemo as it would only add about a month to his life expectancy.

It has been my privilege to know him and his lovely wife during part of their time here, and it grieves me very much for all of us in AP to lose such a fine person and a great shooter.

That's all I know to say. It's kinda hard to see the 'puter screen at the moment.

    FYI

    Alan~^~ :(

  13. Doug,

Leroy's right about the small powder increments making a big difference. Also, another point to consider, you've already proven that the gun is "X-Ring capable" at 50, so if you do your part, you can "clean" all 4 Cup events! Good news, that!

Consistant brass (new) will be a bit more accurate in the long run than the mixed stuff, but I figure you know that part of the equation. Try some different loads around the ones you're already using to see if there's more accuracy available, but for me, I'd be pretty tickled with groups like that out of a 9X19.

  14. SRT,

Yep, you guessed it! The 3.5 lb Bullseye rule was the one refered to!

    Trader,

There was a number for the revolvers as well, just can't remember it at the moment. Scary stuff, that! Guess we'll just have to get used to having an attorney on the committee with all the wrong answers........or maybe the wrong questions.

    Rhino,

Yep, you should be ashamed! ;) After all, those guns might go off when you want them to!

    Alan~^~

  15. rhino,

The Distinguished points are turned in by whoever sends in the results to NRA. They can only be earned at a State, Regional or National Championship match. It's explained on the last page of the rule book, if you have one.

    Alan~^~

  16. Shooters,

Hot off the presses! The latest rule changes proposed for next year by the Action Pistol Rules Committee:

A new class, called Open Modified, will be instituted that will comprise IPSC/USPSA guns; i.e. no wings allowed, but comps and optics are allowed. They will shoot under the present Metallic Sight rules. No prone except at 50 yds on the Practical event, and no touching of the barricade in that event.

All "standard" safeties must be functional.

A non-American can win the Cup itself as well as the overall match, so long as their sanctioning organization recognizes the NRA as their governing body. (Not sure of the wording on that one, but you get the idea.)

Prone will be allowed for Open Class guns (not Open Modified or Metallic Sight) at the 25 yd line for Plates and Practical, but not at any of the closer distances. A compromise to say the least, but maybe it's a start to get more reasonable changes next year.

There are other changes regarding the "Distinguished Program" as follows: Distinguished eligibility points will be available for Metallic Sight shooters who fire at least an 85% possible score (1632 on 1920 course), and shooters who are already

"Distinguished" will be removed from the scoring for points in future matches. Open Class remains at 1824 pts minimum to qualify for points toward the Medal.

Now for next year's agenda! There is talk of setting a "minimum trigger pull", a legal move by the lawyers for liability reasons, but on the bright side, there is also a movement afoot to try to gain back our prone shooting at the closer distances on plates.

So for those having guns built, "put them wangs on that there sucker" and go show 'em how it's done!

    More later as thing develop.
