  1. Just looked through their website. Looks like you can't buy a Titan (40SW)  anymore unless you go full custom which is $4700 minimum.
Thought I saw a video recently where the Titan is a gun that is available with no wait now. You can just order it and have it shipped immediately.

  2. Have you tried going shorter than 1.150”...just to see if it has any effect? I know you’d have to mess with your load a little, but it’s not like you have to dial it in. Just take a little powder out shorten it up and see if it runs?

The factory minor ammo he tried is likely shorter.

  3. Yes, 100% true.  I just see so much you "need" X to be competitive spouted on here all the time,  I like to point out that X is usually very unlikely to make much if any real difference at all.

Ya. The biggest thing is that your equipment runs and you mentally believe it will not let you down. So you can 100% focus on the task at hand.

  4. Ok.... Warning! Incoherent rambling ahead. I'm combining multiple thoughts into one thread but I feel like I might kinda answer the question?

I'd ask some other questions first. Because you're going to get a lot of suggestions for other paltforms.

    1. Is there a better option than the 2011 style open gun?

1.a. If not, how much better is the 2011 platform?

1.b. Are you willing to run a gun that's less advantages to save some money?

IMO, none of the other options are equal to the 2011 platform. The cz/tanfo guns are not equals to the 2011.  Why doesn't anyone here in the US run the non-2011 at the top level?  I don't know what anyone outside the US is doing but I'd guess the cz/tanfo is more popular. Is that because the 2011's are more expensive/difficult to get?

I've shot the checzmate and it's not on the same level as the 2011, IMO. I'd expect I'd feel the same about the tanfo model.  The Glock option is a joke.

So, again I'd ask the OP if he's willing to accept a platform that's not gonna be as good to save money?

Once you decide what option you want to go with, then you gotta decide if you want to spend the cash. This may be backwards but you gotta decide.

Now, to answer your question.  No. There is not an affordable option. Not when considering what you'd get if you went with the "budget" option. Thats like asking if you can build an affordable drag car?  I mean, you could buy Jetta and head out to the tracks but your gonna be disappointed!

The top level shooters are shooting tricked out steel grip 2011's. Yes, most are sponsored and get free or deals on pricing. Though, they'd get the same deal on a plastic grip 2011's so, it seems to indicate they're choosing the options they like the best. My observations seem that steel gripped, middy/shorties with holes are common. I don't think the cheaper optioned 2011 open guns are on the same level as the steel gripped ones. These style guns are very pricey and are not what I'd consider affordable.

    Just my opinion.
Preach brother. Couldn't have said it better.

  5. I've noticed that most people that buy a "cheaper" open gun usually buy a more expensive one within a year or so. Like your buddy.
So you would actually be saving yourself money to just go with a high quality 2011 out of the gate.
You don't have to spend 6k+ to get a custom gun with a builder who will stand behind it. There are a few smaller builders who are a bit less then that for their higher end guns
The can also build them for less with things like polymer grips and not using hybrid barrels etc.
I would base your decision more on what you get excited about and less on the amount of money.

  6. Ha.
A friend asked me recently 'will CO replace Open'?  My answer is YES.

It has all the benefits without the additional costs.
Nah. We have cookies and Co doesn't. They have to snack on granola bars or some stuff that's almost as good but not quite.

  7. I don't want to get in a back.and forth about that but you have a lot more faith than I do.

No way I'd trust one gun and shoot 10 majors.

I wasn't wanting to argue. Just saying he shouldn't let the cost of 2 open guns keep him from switching. Not everyone can afford to purchase 2 out of the gate. It's very rare that you will switch to your backup. The shooting community is awesome too. If your gun goes down there is a good chance someone will help you out. Be it loaning you a part or a gun. We take care of each other. I would let someone shoot my gun if theirs broke.

  8. Not bad info.

Everything in open is more expensive and more difficult. Ammo, mags, accessories. All require more attention/maintenance and cost a lot more.

You're going to want two guns if you want to shoot seriously.  Maybe even three because if one goes down with a serious problem, you could be without it for months. Then, you'd be down to just one gun.

I'm not trying to talk you out of going to open. It is fun!
Ya. It would be nice. To have 2 or 3 open guns but you don't have to.
If he buys a brand new Atlas or similar quality gun. It should be reliable for quite a while. Depending on how much you shoot.
I sold my backup gun at the beginning of this season to help finance building a new gun. I have run my main gun all season, gone to 10 majors, and never needed a backup gun. Just make sure whatever gun you buy is quality.

  10. I believe the legion is cut for the new romeo 3 max. Thought all the new Sig dots will work on all the new Sig guns.

  11. I used to have a lot of ammo that didnt case guage. Then I switched to the Lee undersize die and full length crimp die and now I never have a round that doesnt case guage. Not over exadurating. Never.

I still case guage because it's a extra insurance policy but in the thousands of rounds since getting those dies I have not had one fail.

  12. I get similar residue in my gun from HS6. Which people say is a somewhat dirty powder. But it just wipes off. I usually keep a microfiber cloth handy and keep my gun pretty oiled up. I wipe it off every 300 rounds or so. Or after every match. Mainly the chamber and feedramp area and put more oil on it.

  13. I recommend Pat Rafferty. Rafferty Custom Guns. He might be able to build you a custom near that range. His attention to detail is insane. Look him up on the book of faces or the gram.

  14. I have a very similar gun. I shoot 115gr Everglades JHP V2 under 8.8gr HS6 at 1.165 shoots very nice. I use a 8# variable recoil spring.

I am wondering if the open gun you shot that felt like a .22 was shooting minor power factor loads? Open gun should not feel like a .22. It should feel like a hand cannon but with less muzzle flip and dot movement.

I would suggest trying a few different powders. Maybe go to a match and see if you can get a couple open shooters to let you try a couple of their loads. Almost all of my local friends are shooting HS6 and 115s
