  1. Super and super comp use different extractors

    what is the gun set up for?

    super is easier to find

    Jim

    It's set up for super. From reading various threads, it sounds like sc might be better. I guess I'll try both and see if it works.

    If your gun is setup for SC, I suggest you try the SC loads first before buying 38 Super brass. As mentioned above, some guns with extractor setup for Supercomp will only work for SC and might not work properly for Super.

    Supercomp brass are semi-rimless brass, which is smaller in rim diameter than Super.

    Congratulations on your new toy, welcome to the world open division :)

    Cheers!

  2. I tried the search function and didn't get much.Can anyone tell me a bit about loading 38 super for major.OAL, bullets weights and type and weight of powder.Just to get me started.Thanks for the help,

    Ashley

    It would help us if you tell us more information the type of gun you are using; bbl type and length, compensator, how many popple holes to start with. :)

  3. As long as they are stored properly; sealed, dry in a tight container and low humid environment they should last for years. I myself have a few mixed lot of VV N320 and Titegroup sitting in my basement for almost 4-yrs that I have been trying to finish/consume loading my practice rounds for my 40 SW without any problem. They still go bang. Those powder go a long way in the shelf if stored properly.

  4. Wayne:

    I recently chronoed a batch of MG 9mm 125 grains CMG's using SR 4756 thru my new Bedell shorty with 2-diff OAL's.

    Please remember that my open gun is installed with EGW extended and taller ejector. Both OALs work flawlessly in my Bedell Shorty without a snag.

    Test 1:

    Once fired Starline 38 Supercomp brass

    9mm-125 grns MGB CMJ bullet

    SR 4756

    8.2 Grains

    Win Small Pistol Primer

    OAL = 1.250"

    Velocity = 1354-1360 fps

    PF = 169 - 170

    Test 2:

    Once fired Starline 38 Supercomp brass

    9mm-125 grns MGB CMJ bullet

    SR 4756

    8.2 Grains

    Win Small Rifle Primer

    OAL = 1.235"

    Velocity = 1364 plus fps

    PF = 170 - 171

  5. I finally got a chance to load some up today.

    I decided to start with the zero 125 FMJ Flat nose bullets, 4.1 gr of titegroup, mixed brass, and worked down from 1.125 oal.

    I couldn't get the bullets to chamber until an OAL of 1.080 and they are still still snug in the chamber where you have pull the slide pretty hard to remove the round. The was plenty of room in the mags for a longer OAL but the chamber was the controlling factor.

    RJ

    RJ,

    Do you crimp your rounds to get rid of the bell from your powder die station? Also, it will help if you gauge your loaded rounds to ensure they are sized correctly.

    Good luck and load safely.

  6. There's a whole whack of list in here to give you a variety of 9mm loads.

    Here's what I use for my wife's G17 loads:

    WSP

    WIN Brass

    125 grn JHP Zero/MGB

    4.7 Grns W231

    OAL = 1.090"

    WSP

    WIN Brass

    125 grn JHP Zero/MGB

    4.1 Grns Titegroup

    OAL = 1.090"

    WSP

    WIN Brass

    125 grn JHP Zero/MGB

    3.6 Grns VV N320

    OAL = 1.090"

  7. Considering you are using exactly the same powder and powder charge and bullet weight, lengthening your OAL will likely decrease pressure, velocity and PF of the round. How significant will be the change? It will be fully dependent on how long you will increase your OAL. In theory, the answer is YES.

  8. If you are using 38 SC, you want to make sure you are using an extractor designed to 38 SC the same thing goes for 38 Super brass-you should use an extractor designed for 38 Super or else you will have extraction problem on top of the feeding problem. Stick to the original brass that you were using.

    There could be a few source of the problem, but right now it sounds like it might be your magazine lips not properly angled or the opening is wide or tight. Having the mag tuned would not hurt.

    Good luck

  9. Since I chronoe'd my rounds yesterday, let's revive this thread.

    Both test rounds were chronoe'd 5-minutes apart on a 78 degree humid afternoon (10-rounds each test).

    I got the major PF that I want from both test rounds (167-170 PF). However, I find it weird to get these results from my loads considering the OAL and powder charge between the bullets I chronoe'd (see Test one VS. Test Two info).

    I got a slower velocity using 8.3 grns of 4756 behind 9mm-155 grns Zero JHP with Small Rifle Primer, OAL 1.240" vs. 8.2 grns of 4756 behind 9mm-125 grns MGB CMJ with Win Small Pistol Primer OAL=1.250"????

    Bedell Shorty with Bedell titanium 7-port comp on a .355 KKM bbl-no holes:

    Test one:

    Starline 38 Supercomp brass

    9mm-125 grns Zero JHP bullet

    SR 4756

    8.3 Grains

    CCI Small Rifle Primer

    OAL = 1.240"

    Velocity = 1338-1345 fps

    PF = 167 - 168

    Test Two:

    Starline 38 Supercomp brass

    9mm-125 grns MGB CMJ bullet

    SR 4756

    8.2 Grains

    Win Small Pistol Primer

    OAL = 1.250"

    Velocity = 1354-1360 fps

    PF = 169 - 170

  10. I have been experimenting loads in my Bedell Shorty 38SC 7-port non-hybrid KKM bbl. I have tried 3N37, N350, SR4756 & 7625. A buddy gave me 1/4 lb of his HS 6 to try. I loaded around 100 rounds of HS-6 in 8.1-grns powder charge behind .355 125 grn zero and MGB. with OAL of 1.250. I like the feel/softness in terms of recoil of this powder in my open gun. I am not sure what the PF was since I did not bother to chrono the HS-6 load because it was just a trial load. With the trial 100-rds I shot, I got interested in developing a load using HS-6, but I wanted to consult the experienced open gun shooters regarding this powder. Could anyone give me their experience with the HS-6 and maybe provide me a specific working load they are using? Any Bedell shorty shooter using HS-6 load around here?

    Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

  11. For my Bedell shorty in super, I am running 8.9gr of 4756 under either 124gr Montana or 125gr Zero. making 170pf at around 90 degree, when the temp goes back down I will slowly drop the charge to around 8.6 for the winter time

    I have a new Bedell shorty in 38 SC as well. I know that this post has been posted a year ago, but I am curious or would want to know what the OAL for this load.

    Thanks

    1.250 OAL,

    I am now running 115s, using 9.6gr to make 168pf

    Thanks Supermoto. That was quick :cheers:

  13. I just checked and they both use the same shellplate powder funnel and locator pins. So yes you can. If you are loading 9MM I would get a secone toolhead and powder funnel so that you dont have to change those when changing between calibers.

    Brian

    Yep, you are correct Too Slow, Dillon confirmed to me that 9mm conv kit can be use to reload 38 super as long as the appropriate 38 super die is used.

    Thanks for you input. :)

  14. Thanks for all the replies to my query guys. :):)

    Well, I went to try some loads at the range today using WST, but did not bother to chrono the loads. I tried the following in my STI Edge 40 & my son's stock Para 16-40 ltd both 5" bbl:

    180 Grns TCFM Zero bullet heads

    WSP primers

    batch of 4.2, 4.7 & 5.0 grains WST loads

    OAL 1.155

    I was very pleased with the recoil from the WST loads. Mind you I only tested some minor rounds, but still the muzzle flip of the gun were very minimal compared to VV N320.

    Accuracy was around 2-3 inch spread from 20 yards (I am not a good shooter). Needless to say the result was very encouraging to me. We will see when I start chrono-ing the loads especially now were getting close to fall/cold season here up in Canada. :):) I am really curious/anxious to see how temperature changes affects the performance/velocity of WST loads. I guess we will see soon....... :P

    Keep those info coming guys.. and again your input is much appreciated. Cheers!! :):)

  15. I used 5.0 grains behind a 180 jhp to make major. Worked well , just a little bit sooty is all.

    Are you loading long; 1.200 OAL?? I am looking for an alternative powder. I am running low on my 320s. Local retailer wants 27 dollars a pound. I usually get my 320s at major but has been a little scarce this year.

    With the burn rate of WST based on what I saw from the smokeless gun powder burn rate chart, it is just under the n320. It looks like WST will be a good alternative for N320. (at least the way I look at it - we'll see how it goes when I star using it). Of course IMHO N320 is still far more superior in quality and accuracy in my experience. Price is not the problem here up north, it is just way toooooo hard to get them here at the North side of the border. Only if it is not that hard to import gun powder from the US.... <SIGH>

  16. I have been reloading 40's using VV n320 for a while, but I find that it is very hard to get VV n320 in Canada. I am in my last pound now so I want to try WST. I bought a pound of WST powder and want to try loading it for 40 SW 180 grns head (oal = 1.150-1.170).

    Could you guys share your experience using WST? :)

    Thanks in advance

  17. Here's the deal guys. I cant order online from those suppliers around US. I am from the Canadian side of Niagara. Therefore, I can only pick them up around the area where it is available. :)

    This is the reason why I am looking where I could buy them in the Buffalo area. :)

    The last few times I've ordered Zero bullets I got them from Chuck at Shooters Connection. Great price and service can't be beat.

    -Cuz.
