I’m actually selling a heavily upgraded version SAR K12 Sport on GunBroker right now:

My intention in sharing this is honestly not about selling it but capturing for posterity what upgrades work and which don’t, along with links to all the items. This has been a fun / crazy journey and want to give back to the community.

First: a special shout out to Henning Wallgren (of Henning Group) who patiently helped me at various points on this journey, and who actually has a SAR K12 and could test fit certain items (rather than just guess).

Main Points (I go into more detail later):

    • Most (not all) internal parts for the Tanfoglio Small Frame will work
      • Henning Group and Patriot Defense are a great source of upgrades for Tanfoglio
      • I’ve been told that it’s most similar to a Tanfoglio Witness Elite Limited, but I can’t confirm that
    • Magazines: takes standard CZ 75 magazines
    • Rear sight: EAA SUPER SIGHT (LPA/Bomar style)
    • Front sight: some weird Tanfo-specific thing (you’ll be surprised which Dawson front sight actually works… see below)

What DIDN’T work (so you learn from my mistakes)

    • Henning Base pads on OEM SAR K12 mags
      • Issue: They will slide on but they will just pop right off when they hit the ground.
      • Easy solution: just buy regular Mec-Gar CZ75 mags and put the same Henning Base pads on those. They work perfectly.
    • Henning extended firing pin (H051-TL X-Long Firing Pin for Tanfoglio, HENNING GROUP - X-Long Firing Pin for Tanfoglio)
      • Issue: It would have required modification for both length and taper
      • Easy solution: Patriot Defense has one that just drops in
    • RedX Gear holster
      • Issue: really tight fit, and terrible customer service (that’s a whole saga in itself)
      • Easy solution: modify it or buy a different one (perhaps there are more options now?)

What DID work (so you learn from my successes)

    INTERNALS

    EXTERNALS

FYI… I worked with a gunsmith who is also a competition shooter who understands performance and tuning. In addition to installing and fitting all of these parts, he also

    • Chamfered outside edge of firing pin hole
    • Polished breech face and rails
    • Ramped and polished the feed ramp
    • Magwell: perfect blending of removal of any edges (see photo)
    • Overall polish and deburr

Hey Man, I know its a pretty old post but do you have the part number for the extended firing pin? That link doesnt work anymore and I ordered a Tanfo small frame firing pin but it doesnt fit.

You bet. Glad it worked out.

Because of the price I considered buying one to see if it could be tuned to a nice running USPSA gun. Checked with Patriot Defense about milling for a direct mount SRO optic and it turns out the slide is too narrow.

It does look good though, let the forum know how it works out for you.

Yeah they can’t do a direct mill unfortunately. I went with gun cuts. They made a plate for it for RMR footprint. It’s not as deep as I’d like but that’s ok.

I plan to shoot it tomorrow side by side with one of my shadow 2s. I’ll let you know how it goes.

here’s how it sits with an SRO

I looked at your pic and video.

    Several possibilities;

    1. With the slide on your milling may have somehow interfered with the trigger bar. Are screws sticking down in under the slide?
    2. The new trigger may have changed the ratio of the bar movement and you just aren't getting it to come back properly and push the sear up.
    3. If you changed the slide bar lift spring to a lighter one it may not be pushing the bar up sufficiently.
    4. If you took off too much material from the slide bar lobes (on top) you may have cause some issues.
    5. Did you check the forward trigger stop screw? If the trigger is too far back it may do what you posted.
    6. If the forward trigger stop screw is completely back and the trigger is resting against the frame you will have to trim the front of the trigger down to allow for proper forward movement.

From your pics it's hard to actually diagnose the issue. What I recommend is you reinstall the factory trigger and see if that resolves the issue.

Next run the gun without the optic and plate mounted to the gun.

Basically go back to stock and add things to see if the problem stops and then reoccurs.

Hope this helps, there are rarely true drop in parts. The fun and joy is in making an idea work.

Hey man thanks for the response. I was thinking more about what it could be and thought about the pre travel screw. At first I thought the over travel screw was the issue but after adjusting it didn’t help. Sitting on the couch I realized I didn’t adjust the pre travel screw. Adjusted it all the way out and bingo we seem to be good to go. Will try to get it to the range tomorrow and see how it goes.

    IMG_1416.jpeg

  5. update: I figured it out. It was the pre travel screw out too far. It was fine with the slide off but with it on it didn’t work.

Mods Move to "other" if not allowed here but I figured since its a CZ/Tanfo Clone guys here would know whats up best.

I got this inexpensive Sar K12 to mess around with a low budget LO build. Just got the slide back from being milled and with the slide on I seem to be having issues im assuming with sear engagement that are not present with the slide off.

When I rack the slide the hammer goes back and stays back but doesn't seem to fully engage unless i give it a push back. This can be a very slight touch but it needs it to fully engage and set the trigger otherwise its just a dead trigger.

The other issue is if I manually cocked the hammer it falls back forward probably 8 out of ten times. This does not happen when I have the slide off of the gun it cocks just fine.

What I've done to the gun so far:

    Slide:

-Just the cut. I have some more things I plan on doing but none yet.

    Frame:

    -Blend the magwell to frame.

    -Change trigger return spring

-Change to a Tanfoglio Extreme Flat trigger part# 30XTR00014B

-Change to a lighter galloway precision Mag Strut Spring

-Polish internals using Memphis mechanics video. Ive polished many other guns including Tanfo Stock 2 and a bunch of CZs. I using a Dremel with buffing pad and flitz.

My best guess is a took of material where I shouldn't have when I polishes but only using flitz and a buffing wheel ive never done this before. Click the links for videos of whats going on. Any help appreciated. No attempts to live fire the gun yet its brand new.

I bought one off here a few years back for the same reason. Think I shot a single match with it and it’s been sitting in the safe ever since.

    Wanna sell it?

    I have several.

Will not buy another Red Hill. I appreciate their support of matches, but the fit and durability are not good. Fit is sloppy and my first one cracked within a year of purchase. They gave me a discount on a replacement and they are fairly quick about shipping as positives.

Also have a GX Vice which is good. Fit is average but with the lever lock it is not an issue. Very tough holster. Problem is the website says 16 weeks lead time and I have heard rumor it can be longer than that.

I just ordered a Long's Shadow Huron for a 1911. I have one for Tanfo. The fit is excellent and lead time is not bad.

As for specific guns. Call whoever you plan to order from and go over it specifically. They likely have seen it before and can guide you...

It’s not a rumor it’s a fact. GX holsters are at about 10 or more months right now unless you’re a freind or sponsored shooter. Lead time still says 16 weeks which is the worst part. Good holster but I would not purchase again.

  8. His wait time is about 10-12 months. The more you bitch the faster you get it. Sad to say but if you want it faster you need to be a pain in his ass. Joel Park just posted on his instagram that Lafe made him one for the new steel frame pdp. Pretty bad taste if you ask me. Regular customers are waiting 8 months last the quoted time and you send one to your buddy a week after the gun comes out?!

Terrible design would be understatement...  I've been swapping parts (including the slide release button) from my Rival-S > a polymer Rival.  It took me over an hour to get the pin back in on a polymer frame Rival this weekend, and that was following the online uTube vids.

When I tried the same method on the steel frame, it just flat wouldn't work.  The steel doesn't have the "grip" that the polymer material has and it wasn't working.  I read your dental floss idea and had it done in less than 10 minutes and that's having to wrap the floss twice, as I didn't get the pin compressed quite enough on the 1st wrap and had to redo it.

I didn't have to cut the floss, just unwound it once the pin was set in to the slide release holes.  Good2go!!  THANK YOU for posting this!!

Yeah the steel on steel is way too slick. Took me multiple days the first time. I had to file a notch to get it to hold. The floss is the only good way. Glad the post helped.

So, this happened to me, too. I bought the Black Scorpion Gear Pro Heavy Duty Competition for the Rival-S and my Darkside does not fit well in it. The support representative I spoke to, and exchanged emails with, told me that it is the correct holster and that it was strange mine didn't fit. He sent me a picture of his Rival-S in the same holster that fits just fine. Lo and behold, his Rival-S was chrome... mine is a Darkside. :(

What you see in that imgur GIF is exactly what happens with mine. There's too much friction holstering and it just sticks on the draw. The front of the slide, where the slide cuts and serrations are, shaves off so much of the holster. I sent the holster back to Amazon, where I bought it from, for a full refund. The support rep on the phone then advised me to buy directly from them and he gave me a 10% discount code to use to make up for the faster shipping so I can get a replacement holster sooner. (The code is "sal10", if anyone wants to use it.) Great service, and I don't blame them for not knowing there was a difference between one Rival-S color to another. I didn't know this either until I found this post.

If the replacement holster still has the same issues, I will modify it instead of rolling the dice with another replacement. I only opted for a replacement because I have time until the next match.

Yeah its super strange they have different dimension. I ended up selling the black gun after buying my friends chrome so I could have two chromes. The black one shot awesome still but It was weird to fit differently.

It's actually in the perfect spot.  The fellas worked directly with Corey Yates in creating it.  They did a great job.

Perfect or too far back will always be subjective. My hands are different than Corey Yates (whoever that is) so just because it was great for him doesn’t meal it will be for me.

If it's an integral part of the gun (like the P320 takedown lever lever replacement) it IS legal in CO. A trigger pin is an integral part of the gun.

That is not correct. The Canik Thumb rest is not a pin like the align tactical therefore is not legal for CO.

I bought a Canik thumb rest.  This thing is huge and it works well, but I can't find a holster to fit my Rival-S Chrome with the thumb rest installed.  Has anyone found one that works?

Considering that thumb rest will put you in LO you mind as well get a race holster now.

I wasn't impressed with the Lok Veloce "grippiness" - returned them. I'm used to silicon carbide I guess, but I hate the job of applying it. I'm back to Handle It grip tape for now - changing it every six months or so. Hoping the Lok aluminum grips have more bite. The brass are too heavy for me.

it was super simple to apply to the backstrap. took 5-10 minutes.

Vicious tape is incredible. Everyone that touches my gun compares it to barbed wire. Lol

Yeah dude I love it. It’s painful in a good way lol. But it doesn’t cut me or tear me up. Not yet at least. I haven’t shot a match with that gun yet though.

I’ve run it in two matches now.  Works great, not sure if better… the tool they sent I broke immediately, which isn’t an issue, they make that clear that it’s single use. But I figured I’d still be swapping them back and forth testing stuff once I figured out the spring.  I don’t think there’s a “trick”. That mag catch spring is a nightmare.  I’ve been talking to them and they are planning a multiple use all metal tool which I’ll be buying. Also trying to convince them to make a catch with more material on it to prevent over insertion.

Yeah I have several parts from them including a mag catch. I mostly bought it for the tool. I think I got 1-2 uses out of it before it broke. I talked to Brandon months ago about making one that last longer. Seems like he finally working on a metal version.

as a lefty that’s owned I think 10 caniks now I have to change them pretty often. There’s two ways I’ve found that work pretty well. One way I use a triangle file to file a very slight notch in the Chanel the spring rides in. This helps keep the spring where it should be. I use a couple punches and can get it done pretty quickly.

The other method I’ve been using lately is to compress the spring in the vice (don’t go to much or the spring will lose its “memory” and won’t go back out) then wrap it in dental floss so it stays compressed. Then you can slide it mostly back in cut the floss and push it in the rest of the way. The floss is probably the best way but I’ve done it so many times the other way I’m pretty good at it and get it done relatively quickly.

I will say it’s a TERRIBLE design. There’s so many better options they could have went with.

I somehow bent mine.  My Rival turned into a pump action pistol in a match today.  Anyone knows where I can purchase a replacement?  I'm having no luck at the moment.

I bent one before on one of my polymer rivals. I just bent it back as close as could to stock.

So, I reached out to Disruptive Defense about the Mag insertion issue.  They haven't had a chance to extensively test for it on the Rival S as they actually have theirs out of commission.  But they managed to find a blemished mag catch out back in appearance only, still functionally correct and are going to get it out to me this week.   Never heard of them until today, but at least so far; absolutely stellar customer service.

Keep in mind the only difference between the left and right handed version is the orientation of the logo. It will still function the same.

  19. In order of importance (IMO) this is the list of things Indontonthe polymer guns.

    - handleit/talon grips or silicon carbide on the frame.
    -springco comp spring kit

-w74 tungsten or wolf SS guide did with 14 or 15 lb recoil spring (I think the extra weight from the from the tungsten is worth it.
-brass backstrap. Taylor freelance or lok. Get whichever you find cheaper. I think the new TF is best.
-freedonsmith trigger ( I like the sport shoe)

    -disruptive defense optic plate.

I think thats about it. It doesn’t take much. Obviously you’ll need your choice of optic and mags. If you want 24+1 you’ll need henning pads and MBX or Rune tacticle springs and followers.
