  1. This was my first major 3 gun match, and all I can say is WOW!! Great stages, everything ran very smoothly considering how many competitors were there, the range is absolutely awesome and tho I didn't stick around for it I heard the prize table was over the top. I really enjoyed shooting with Squad 6, thank you all for the help and encouragement - I learned a lot, and I really wanna go shopping now for new gear! I have scope envy in a bad way, thanks to Sharon! Thank you to all the match staff and sponsors for putting on a fantastic event, it will definitely be on my list for next year and maybe I won't be so close to the bottom next time...

It was a pleasure getting to know you!

  3. You can have all the electronic doodads you want, You still have to have a piece of paper. All the palm pilot stuff does is push work from a stats shed out onto the stages. Where an RO who has way better things to do than mess with gadgets has to deal with it.

I am reasonably tech savy and I have RO'd quite a few majors. I wont be doing any more palm pilot ro'ing. There is realy no better option than a simple two piece carbon copy score sheet and pen. Score keeper sees it, Shooter gets an instant copy, notes can be wrote off to the side if needed, score can be scratched out and changed if needed.

Palms may speed up stats, but at the multiplied expense of slowing down the stages. Misakes can be made and there are hand writing issues but the shooter is supposed to look at the score before he initials. If the hand writing is too sloppy to read I would make the RO fix it before I initialed. Carbon copy paper sheets are a simple process, work well, everyone understands them. Using tech for the sake of tech when there is no improvement in the process makes no sense.

Having been involved in countless matches over the years, from locals to Areas/majors, and from all 3 angles (competitor, RO and stats shack) I would have to wholeheartedly disagree. Paper scoring can't even come close to the efficiency and accuracy that you gain by using electronic scoring. Yes the Palms are an outdated platform, but they work very well and you just can't beat the price point. I am looking forward to having a choice in platforms, whether it is android or apple, and I'm very excited to see that the new EZWin version supports a more generic import - that will open this up to even more possibilities.

Here in the D/FW area we have been using Palm scoring at local matches for several years. I believe the key is in the training - a quick YouTube search will lead you to several videos on how to use the palms - pretty much anyone who can use a cell phone can use the Palms with just a little bit of effort. The shooters in this area are now spoiled by not having to deal with paper on the range, and by having final scores available within a few minutes of the last shot fired. At almost every match I hear someone else stepping up and saying "hey, can you show me how to use that Palm thing?", which means the kool-aid is really tasty :roflol: We have also done several major matches in this area using Palm scoring, and even with having to record a summary of each shooter on paper it is far superior than all paper. I'm sorry your experience so far hasn't been a good one - but I'm happy to say that you're probably going to have to get over that aversion, as it looks like electronic scoring is here to stay (woo hoo!!). I'd be happy to give you a personal tutorial if you're so inclined, just say the word!

  4. OK, sorry for the delay, but we are having issues uploading results to USPSA - for the record, scores were complete and posted at the range by noon though, thanks to Palm scoring.

Final results can be found on USPSA under club code IPSC75 for now. We will have them moved to an Area 4 link as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the match, be sure to thank Ken and the rest of the crew for putting on a fabulous match. And the weather actually cooperated this time except for a little scare this morning... :surprise:

  5. I just finished signing up and paying with velocityshooter.com. How does the self squadding work?

You should get an e-mail with a PIN number once you've been entered into the system. Then go to uspsa.org, click on Club Support, then click on Self Squadding. You should be able to click your name and put yourself into a squad. Sometimes your PIN number off the label of your Front Sight will work as a PIN too.

Thanks girl. Do you think cleats would be best for stopping a fat guy on the new surface that Robert laid down? I might still have DTR mud on my cleats from the North Texas match.

Hahaha! Yes, cleats are still the best choice I think. Everybody that goes to DTR brings a little bit of the range home with them, either mud or dust, it's like a badge of honor!

  7. Never attended a match other than my local monthly matches. How does one prepare. Can one compete in 2 divisions. What should I know.

Well, where to start... More stages, more rounds, probably a lot of props that you don't see at a typical local match, and a lot more shooters! This is probably going to be a technical match, which basically means you're going to have to AIM  . I don't think it's possible to shoot in 2 divisions, besides, one will probably be plenty! Come out and shoot, you'll have a great time.

  8. Thanks for the encouragment, I am planning on trying to hit some local matches this month, I am shooting in a IDPA match this Sunday, and signed up for another one on the 18th that is USPSA. I live in the Fort Worth, Tx area so any places you can recomend to practice or matches to go to feel free to throw my way and I will try to hit them.

Gear wise, I have 5 mags for my HK45, should I get more for this match?

That said I think I am going to go ahead and sign up for the Friday shoot (once I get my USPSA number) and assuming there is still room to shoot on Friday. Worst that would happen is I finish last, and until I get more practice thats probbaly going to happen anyway.

There is a local forum card dfwshooters.org. The local matches should be on there. If you don't mind a short 3 hour drive OKC gun club is having it's monthly club match this Saturday and the first Saturday in June A's well. We had 8 stages and 106 shooters last month. So it's very similar to a major match.

+1 on dfwshooters.org, it is a great resource for all shooting in the D/FW area. There is a USPSA match this Saturday in Alvarado at the Johnson County Sports Shooters range - usually only 4 stages, but shouldn't be too much of a drive for you from Ft. Worth. Directions at http://www.jcssa.com/. Hope to see you there!

  9. I apologize if this is posted somewhere, but I'm missing it :) Is a schedule posted anywhere for the match? I'm driving down Friday after work - can I check in on Saturday morning, and at what time? What time is the shooter's meeting (if any) on Saturday, and what time is hammer down? What's the squad schedule? What's the start time for Sunday? (realize it's Spring Forward on Saturday night, everyone! :) ).

Just trying to make sure I'm in the right place at the right time cheers.gif

    Dave,

Registration opens at 7:00 AM Friday & Saturday. Shooters meeting promptly at 8:00 AM with first shots downrange at 9:00 AM. Ten stages and ten squads on Saturday so everyone starts at the same time.

A lunch break is scheduled for 12:00 to 1:00.

And Squad 3, the Super Squad, starts on Stage 1.

    Good luck and enjoy.

    Bill

So just to clarify, the Saturday squads will shoot the entire match on Saturday, all 10 stages? Nothing but awards/prize table on Sunday?

    Thanks!

    Rhonda
