  1. 4.9 grains of N320 under a 180 gr. Zero JHP in my stock .40 Edge barrel gives me 166 pf at 80*. Loads over 5.0 grains should give major pf at most temp. Got to chrono to be sure of course. The MG 180 grain CMJ over 4.8 grains of Titegroup (saving my last can of N320 for the Nationals; powder and primers are freaking hard to get here in Hawaii), 1.175 OAL and Win. small rifle primers gives me sub 2" groups at 25 yards offhand.

I shoot almost the same load of 4.9 N-320 Zero 180 JHP 1.170 OAL in a stock Eagle 5" bushing barrel .

At last check I am getting a 170 PF at 72* , so this helps me know the chrono is not to far off!

  2. This might help those looking for holsters, belts, mag holders etc.

  3. Years ago, EGW was asked by USPSA to make an official "mag length gauge", and was told to make sure that all the combinations of tubes and base pads that were available at the time would fit this gauge. It was deemed necessary to make the gauge measure 171.25mm and 141.25mm, to allow for all the manufactures parts to be legal. As a manufacture, I received my official gauge, and because of this increase in length (1.5mm) over previous rules, I proceeded to make a longer base pad (4mm) to make it possible to fit the gauge exactly, compared to my 2.5mm pad. An exact fit to the gauge is worth some room inside the mag, but now you have to check the length with the combination of parts you choose. Once this gauge was used officially, the rule book was eventually changed to match what the gauge measured.

Is EGW the only one making a "official gauge" ?

  4. I've purchased 4 new STI's in the past 2 years and for some reason they all shot low. This was confirmed by several shooters at the range so it's not just me. While it wasn't an issue with the adjustable sights, one of my IDPA Eagle's came with fixed Heine sights so I had to change over to the .160 front sight. This made everything right with the world. IMHO I would think that you would benefit more from the .160 in case you ever wanted to switch to fixed (for whatever reason) and just simply not have to have your rear sight so far off the slide. Go .160

Thanks for the imput! I ordered the .160 and it should be here this week! I will post my findings <_<

  5. I wanted witness holes at the 10 and 11 round mark in 12 round STI .45 magazines for IDPA.

I measured. The least tedious method was to take off the floorplate, let the spring protrude against a tabletop to apply light tension to the follower. Then load the magazine with 10 and carefully invert it. Remove the spring and follower and measure to the bottom round. Then mark on the outside, figure to the middle of the primer, and drill, then deburr. There was more difference magazine to magazine than I expected, but it is clear whether there are 11, 10, or fewer rounds loaded.

Thanks for the info ! this is how you "just load ten rounds and measure it" :surprise:

I thought if I could see the rounds to measure I wouldn't need the holes :roflol:

  6. A dueling tree heavy enough for close range centerfire pistol is an excellent trainer for this. Do-All sells a couple of different models and they are not too expensive. Target aquisition is the key, gun movement and sight picture.

If done correctly, a texas star only requires 3 holding points. The first plate at the top, the top right(or left, your choice) plate, and then the lower right(or again left) plate. By that time the star is moving sufficiently to pick off the other two plates as they come into this same sight picture, which is very near the starting point for the plate at 4 o'clock or 8 o'clock as the tree starts.

3 of the plates should end up stacked nearly one on top of the other.

Using my open gun, but with minor steel loads, I won the Masters Texas Star shootout last year, turning in 3 times of 3.45, 3.43 and 3.14 from a hands above shoulders, holstered start. I was quite happy!

Thanks ,I will be giving this a try!

  7. According to Dawson's site it looks like you need the .180 height. But if I had any reservation's I would give Dawson's a call and I'm sure he could help you out.

Thanks, I did call Dawson and was told that the .160 will work and that I will still have some room to adjust.

  8. I have a new STI Eagle 5" bushing barrel in .40 . I want to put a Dawson FO front sight on but I am not sure on the height? The stock sight is .170 and I had to adjust the rear sight up a little about 4 clicks to hit my point of aim. The Dawson FO comes in .180 and .160 tall and I was not sure if .160 would be to short?

I think I may have just answer my own question :surprise: I think I will file down the stock sight to .160 and see if I have enough rear sight adjustment

Oh well, I take so long typing with two fingers that I am going to post this anyway :roflol:

  9. I heard from one of the guys at STI that a new company, "starts with an O" is making a different style of shirts that will qualify for the STI Contingency shirt...

Anyone know who this is and how to find them?

Ideally, I would like an Underarmour style of close fitting moisture wicking shirt. Everything else out there is a bit baggy and doesn't fit as close to the body as I want; besides the underarmour shirts compress my rapidly expanding squishy section in the middle.....doh!

    Thanks for any help.

    B.

I got a business card from Jimmy Murray at Revi technical wear he made the area 6 RO shirts.

  10. Hello: It depends on the feed lips and the angle of the tube etc. The followers don't come into play or the base pads. You will measure from the first round down and so much over from the sides. I did some for the 126mm STI mags a while back and started with a 1/16" hole first so I could pull it over if I had to. I did those so I could see when they were loaded with 10 rounds for IDPA. Thanks, Eric

I am wanting to do some 126mm STI mags for IDPA do you have "approximate" start dimensions ?

    Thanks Donald

  11. i have been seeing everyone here locally price gouging

so here i am on the bandwagon

there are roughly 10000 primers only fired once

    only $75 a thousand :surprise:

  12. Ok, so I obviously didn't do this right the first time... Means watch the classifieds for an "eagle" DOH blade-tech with tek-loc

    But I digress.

Ok, so I have a 5" short dustcover, STI that I want a DOH for. However the dust cover is also full width (matches the width of the slide exactly - unlike normal).

What Blade-tech do I get for it? The Edge version and just deal with the fact that the Edge has a full length dust cover? Or is there something else.

The problem with what I got... One for an Eagle, is that you can see where the dust cover molding is slightly narrower than the slide and even with the screws all the way out, it still rubs too much for my liking.

For those in the know, please let me know. For those interested in a *brand new* STI - Eagle, DOH with Tek-loc... I'll post it sometime over the weekend in the classifieds...

    Thanks,

    Alan

    Alan,

If you do not return the Blade Tech for a Eagle 5" short dust cover I will be watching for your "for sale" post !

Was that for a bull barrel or bushing barrel 5" Eagle?

  13. I've shot in every division with Glocks, 1911s, 2011s, etc. Had a real nice custom STI open blaster for a while. Just didn't suit me. I'm back shooting a G17 in production at the moment. I just love the simplicity of the Glocks. They run great, I can actually work on them myself, cleaning is optional. Simple gun for a simple mind! :roflol:

your not making this any easier! <_<

  14. Sorry to beat a dead horse but big +1 on give the STI more time. I started shooting pistols right after my 21st b-day and my first purchase was a Glock. I dry-fired and "played with it" all of the time. My first few years shooting USPSA was with a Glock. Then, because I loved the sex-appeal of the 1911 platform I bought a few. Same thing happened to me, could not shoot them for crap and they did not feel right to me AT ALL. So much so that I only kept Glocks in my house and on my person for self defense. Finally, a few years back I made the decision to shoot only 1911/2011 pistols in competition and dry-fire practice for 1 season of competition. The rest is history as they say. I now feel totally comfortable on both platforms. I keep a 2011 Tactical next to the bed and a Glock in my truck. Because I have given enough time to both platforms they both feel natural to me now. I am sure that if you keep your Glock around for self defense but leave it in the range bag and ONLY play with the STI for a few months you will notice the same thing.

Either way, congrats on getting an STI!

    Cheers623

    DVC

 I want to Thank everyone for the replies there are a lot of good comments and suggestions although I'm not sure about the "nickel-plated sissy pistol" one... :roflol:

I think I have become very comfortable with the familiarity of my Glocks and I will have to commit to putting the time and effort in to "learning" a new shooting platform. I am going to clean my compition Glocks and put them away for awhile so I can spend the time it takes to become comfortable with the STI . I will try to post now and then on my progress.

  15. I'm with you. I did the STI thing recently as well but I just couldn't get used to it. Great gun, more accurate than the Glock, but I was slow as hell with it because it just didn't feel right. I'm back to the Glock and now have an expensive paperweight at home.

Thanks, I thought it was just me!

  16. I just got a new STI Eagle 40 and it has the best fit and finish of any of my handguns ! It's smooth , the trigger is very good it's just a great gun! I am very fortunate to be able to have one and I can't say anything bad about it, BUT! I really like my Glocks ! and I know its not good to switch back and forth but to me the Glock just feels right! I must be having Glock withdrawals :surprise: I know my 1911 friends think I need help

  17. Post some pictures or we won't believe you! ;) Congratulations!

I shot 100 rounds of 180gr factory ammo today Rem & WWB , I used 7 new mags and had 3 FTF that only required a light bump on the back of the slide. I don't think that is to bad for the first time out. Time to work up a new load <_<

I am going to try to post some pics...

    post-6448-1230058437_thumb.jpg post-6448-1230058472_thumb.jpg

Might try AOL's between 1.180 and 1.20 most 40 S&W 2011's will feed that length.

Nice looking blaster and that is a really nice looking display platform. I recently bought a 2011 after shooting Glocks for sometime. I still like Glocks for carry and production but man that 2011 is a fine shooting platform.

Thanks! the stand is homemade, I want to get some N-320 and work on a load for limited major pf using zero 180gr JHP it seems ot be a popular powder for the 40S&W.

  18. Post some pictures or we won't believe you! ;) Congratulations!

  19. Congratulations on the new STI! Now the addiction begins: trigger job, sights, different finish ... :roflol:

    Ya got that right!

    A.T.

I think your right :surprise: I didn't even have it cleaned and I was on line looking at magwells, base pads and holsters...

I picked it up this afternoon  I will try to post pics tommrow ! it needs to be cleaned first...

  21. I ordered a STI Eagle 5" 40 with a bushing barrel and it should be here today :D This is my first post but I have been reading a lot of the post on mags, favorite loads and accessories. There is a lot of good information here and a lot of my questions have already been answered, but I am sure there will be more.

Thanks, I will get pics as soon as I get it home. I have been shooting Glocks for a while and like them (all six) but I have a good friend who is a BIG 1911 fan and has been trying to convert me for a long time <_< so I am going to give it a try.

Remember..... that little lever thing on the side is a thumb safety..... not found on a Glock. It took me awhile to remember to use it when gripping the gun.

I suppose you will be shooting limited?

    Jerry

when trying to use a 1911, I would forget the thumb safety or not fully depress the grip safety then have to figure out which one it was while the clock keeps running  Glocks do have there good points
