  1. hm, good question. subscribed to this thread.

I have found a CZ 75D airsoft and the KWA CZ75B before, not sure how close they would be for you though.

Watching this for replies as well.

    :)

I had seen the 75D. It doesn't appear to be a 'high end' airsoft gun, plus it's compact, so I dismissed it.

I somehow missed the KZ75. Just watched a few positive reviews of it.

    Pros:

    It might fit my holster

It's a closer match to a SP-01 Shadow than the Tanfo

    Cons:

More expensive than the Tanfo ($165 vs $130)

Sights aren't very good. Not adjustable, and can't tell if they can be drifted.

    It's SAO, as well

  2. It seems more appropriate to post this here rather than the airsoft forum.

An incoming CZ SP-01 Shadow has me fired up about training and improving, so I started to think about training with an airsoft gun again. (I also watched an episode of 3 Gun Nation and saw Keith Garcia shooting airsoft in his garage. If it's good enough for him, then I should be doing it too.)

I have a airsoft Caspian widebody that shoots great, but I've never been sold on using it since it so different from the Beretta, Sig and most recently M&P that I've shot. It feels and points much different that anything I own, so I've shot it very little.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is a good airsoft version of the CZ 75. A Kadet may be in my future, but at this time access to a range is as much a hindrance to my training as ammo cost is. I do dryfire, but I've also found that sometimes I get sloppy with my sight picture without realizing it. My hope is the airsoft training would correct this.

I'm wondering if the airsoft Tanfoglio LTD Custom would be a close enough match to the SP01 to make training worthwhile? I know it's SAO and it won't weigh nearly as much and I almost certainly can't use the same holster, but I'm thinking more about the dimensions and pointability, as well as the ability to create similar sights (I'm not above taking a file to front sight of an airsoft gun. And I'm going to experiment with taking the FO rod out of my Shadow and replacing it with black insert anyway. So there's no issue with one being a blade and the other a FO.)

I guess this question is as much for the folks that have shot a Tanfoglio LTD and a SP01. How different are they in terms of feel and how they point?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

Just FYI: here's Keith Garcia talking about airsoft and .22 training. It's nothing new, but seeing a top competitor talk about it made me want to revisit it.

  3. My gripe with the BoD over their decision is it is just another way to stifle new products that competitive shooters could use. Whatever.

I suspect the BoD's intention was to avoid an equipment race in Production. If their intention was to stifle new products , they would have banned those gimmicky pouches from all divisions. I don't know if you are purposely being obtuse, but in case you didn't know, the BoD recently approved rule changes in Limited that are anything but stifling new products.

I'm all for leaving Production the way it is. As it's been said ad nauseum, USPSA has Open (and to a lesser degree, Limited) for folks that want to be on the cutting edge of equipment. Sounds like you should be shooting there.

  4. According to Amazon, people that bought Beyond Fundamentals also bought Captain of Crush Grippers. So clearly some of us are on the grip strength bandwagon.

I thought I pass along another tool to increase grip strength: Thick Bars and Thick Bar Adapters.

I'm talking about barbells with a 2 to 3 inch diameter, which are much more difficult to grip than a standard barbell. This gives your forearms and grip a great workout. One would be a useful addition to a home gym.

If you train at a commercial gym or on the road, try a fat grip adapter that can be added to a standard barbell. Fatz Grip is one of the originals, but there's also Grip4orce and Tyler Grips. The cheapest adapter I could find was a pair of Manus grips on Ebay for $25. I'm using them for warmup sets on deads and pullups, and some work sets on pressing and rowing movements. They slip on over a standard barbell or dumbbell. I haven't had them long but I think it's making a difference.

  5. Then my magazine release wore out and started dropping magazines by itself. Is the magazine release plastic all the way through, including the portion that retains the magazine in place? Then my trigger started failing to reset, so I couldn't fire again (this last was traced to a mildly dirty firing pin channel).

There's a little metal tab in the magazine release. I think some early M&Ps experienced dropped magazines. A friend's .40 would drop the magazine every single time he fired it. A call to S&W got him a new magazine release, which fixed the problem. I haven't read of anyone complaining about that recently, so I imagine S&W figured out the problem and corrected it.

  6. I don't recommend WST in 9 mm with Jacketed bullets, however it works very well with Bayou Bullets, I shot 135gr Bayou's in my Shadow with 4.2gr of WST loaded 1.145. Bayou's won't gunk up your gun like black or lead bullets.

To reliably make 130pf with WST and a jacketed bullet 124gr CMJ MTG took 4.7gr of WST in 100+ temp, this is a pretty high pressure load, for comparision the load was 4.2gr of TiteGroup for the same pf.

Ooops. I must not have searched very hard. Found this info from Cocobolo right after I started a new topic. Everyone else is welcome to add their load as well.

  7. I bought some WST I think because I remember reading it was bulky (thus more obvious when double charged) and decent with lead bullets.

Now I've got some Bayou 135gr bullets but can't find any load data for WST. Starting to wonder if WST wasn't meant for 9mm.

Anyone shooting WST with a lead/moly 135 bullet?

    THanks.

  8. should be good. hardest part is waiting!

Tell me about it. Can't wait to get my hands on my Stuartized Shadow.

I've got one coming, too! Never been this excited about a pistol before.

I've got one coming from Stuart, too! Never been this excited about a pistol before.

  10. Timely thread for me, as I really want a CZ SP-01 Shadow.

It's a little confusing, so correct me if I'm wrong. It seems like there's only a couple of ways to go about doing it--

    1) Buy a 'stock/factory' Shadow from CZ Custom ($880). (Is this the only place to get a SP-01 Shadow, besides the odd one that turns up on Gunbroker?)

------a) Send the pistol to Matt Mink ($250) or EERW/Stuart (price unknown) for a competition hammer and trigger job and other upgrades.

------b ) buy a competition hammer from (CZ Customs - $69) or Cajun Gun Works ($69-125) and tune the trigger yourself. Plus change some springs too, I would imagine.

    2) Buy a Custom Shadow from CZ Custom ($1200) Heavily upgraded. Be sure to get the "competition" trigger job.

    3) Buy a tuned/upgraded Shadow from Akai ($1200) Heavily upgraded

    4) Buy a tuned/upgraded Shadow from Matthew Mink (price/specs unknown)

    5) Wait for a used one to turn up in the classifieds or Gunbroker.

What did I miss or get wrong?

Shay can do triggers, it doesn't matter if its and s_i, cz or kel-tec(I am sure he could do the trigger on those to!) Shay does awesome work!!! he will be at Mississippi Classic this weekend, and I am sure he will have one to show off.

Akai is a sponsor at the VA/MD Sectional this weekend. This is my first major match so I'm not sure how many vendors/sponsors show up, but I was hoping that meant there would be an Akai representative there with one of Shay's Shadows. I'd like to handle one.

  11. My first instinct was the holster, but it appears normal, is labeled 9 Pro, and fits well. I inspected the holster when I first noticed the problem, and there were no burrs or sharp edges that should cause this. I have the tension adjusted very light.

  12. M&P Pro 9 slide lost the finish where it rubs my Comptac holster. I noticed it after 50 presentations. After a couple hundred draws it settled down and hasn't worsened, as it seems all the Melonite is probably gone from every place it rubs. It looks worse than my old blued Beretta with 10s of thousands of presentations.

(FWIW, my mags have lost the finish at wear spots too.)

Sorry for the poor phone pics. It's actually worse than the photos show since it was hard to capture the shiny metal. I'm not interested in sending it back, as it looks like it has more character than it deserves. Just wondering if this is normal.

  13. Bottom line is you have less mass in the slide moving back when the gun cycles then compared to an identical gun with a bull barrel, and a little more weight on the muzzle of the gun due to the extra mass of the rib.

Honest question (I have no experience with a Sight Tracker) I thought the big advantage was that the front sight doesn't reciprocate and the shooter can more easily maintain focus on the front sight since the focal distance doesn't change?

Or is it about the weight?

    (edited to fix grammar)

  14. Any good teachers around central Alabama that you could recommend??

    TIA

I recommend Frank Proctor in Alabama. I was fortunate to have him as the lead instructor for few .mil classes I attended. I'm posting a link to his website below. You can read his bio there, which shows he can do both "tactical" and competitions. (He's also an excellent long range rifle instructor.)

  15. No one has mentioned the SIRT pistol yet. If allowed, that would be my choice.

    http://nextleveltraining.com/

Get the red slide version to reduce the chances of running into problems with your university. Some places may ban 'realistic replicas'.

EDIT: I see you are an open shooter and in NZ. Might not be available to you, and the SIRT is aimed at production shooters. Instead I might use one of the airsoft open guns if you can afford to outfit one with another RDS.

  16. You mean "not reliable" in that sentence, right? Do you have a pointer? I've not read anything that suggests the more advanced versions of the tests are not reliable? They are just a point in time - you have to keep that in mind, and those levels can fluctuate throughout the day, etc. Really, you need multiple tests to get a more accurate picture, but...

Yes, I meant NOT reliable. Thanks for catching that. I'll change it in original post.

    I appreciate the responses.

Here's the link to Sisson's recent post about advanced bloodwork tests.

    http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-to-interpret-advanced-cholesterol-test-results/#axzz1l8dSiooC

    Here's an excerpt:

How to Interpret Advanced Cholesterol Test Results

After last week’s post on interpreting traditional lipid tests, I promised a follow-up post on interpreting the advanced VAP and NMR Lipoprofile tests that provide measurements of particle size and all the various sub-fractions of HDL and LDL particles. I even hinted that it might be worth bypassing the traditional test entirely and going straight to the advanced stuff if you were going to get your cholesterol measured anyway, because of the greater accuracy and more detailed picture of your lipids the VAP and NMR tests provide.

Well, I’m going to have to reevaluate my stance on the matter and rethink that original suggestion. Recent evidence shows and commentary from researchers concludes that the various advanced lipoprotein particle classification tests can produce wildly disparate results on the same samples to the point of rendering them unreliable (sound familiar?), especially if we’re going to be evaluating our health based on the results. A 2009 systematic review found that the available LDL subfraction literature ”does not provide adequate data about comparability in terms of test performance to choose one or another method to serve as a standard nor are data on comparability in terms of predicting CVD outcomes.” In short, it could – and probably does – have diagnostic value, but there are no real standards for measurement or analysis that would allow us to use the information. Yet.

(Post continues at the above link.)

  17. I'm asked if you were talking to me, since I never said to eat grains or follow the AHA diet.

I'm questioning whether you can let your cholesterol numbers go through the roof without concern because you are on the paleo diet. Conventional wisdom may be wrong, but there's a lot of ground in between Sisson and conventional wisdom on this issue. The correct way could be somewhere in the middle.

  18. (I'm not completely onboard with his take on cholesterol and heart disease. Seems like a leap of faith to think that Mark Sisson has it all figured out and the thousands of cardiologists that prescribe statins are all deluded. Possible, but not convinced yet.)

I haven't read Mark's stuff talking about statin drugs, so I can't explain the research that he's got or the arguments that he makes... After some ... negative ... experiences at a couple of doctors dealing with the subject, however, and subsequent deep research on the subject of my own, I won't be taking a statin - and certainly not based on the extremely primitive bloodwork numbers that most docs want to base their prescription on. Keep your inflammation levels low (ie, eat grass fed, if you can, and take some good fish oil), keep your carb intake low (kinda hard to get AGEs if you don't have a surplus of glucose in the system), get some exercise in, and, unless you have some severely bad genetics, you shouldn't be in any danger of atherosclerosis (or the other constituent parts of metabolic syndrome). (of course, I'm not offering anyone medical advice, and I'm not a doctor... research on your own... just telling you what I found ;) ).

I would think any change in behavior/diet would be better than just taking some drugs. It also wouldn't surprise me one bit if some doctors out there are just pushers for the drugs.

First, you have to keep in mind that, from my understanding, Sisson is even less of a "lean meats" guy than some of the other Paleo experts and has no problem with saturated fats. He says that's what people have the most trouble "buying into" when considering a Paleo diet.

And I don't doubt some doctors prefer to prescribe a drug rather than trust someone will make a lifestyle change, or even prefer to push a drug for unethical reasons.

But my comment isn't about statins per se, but rather the idea that Mark Sisson (or another paleo blogger) has discovered the secret to heart health, a secret that has eluded cardiologists (those would be the ones who'd be prescribing statins or telling you to go on the American Heart Association-approved diet, or follow some other conventional heart-health wisdom). (I don't know Sisson's views on statins either, so "doctors prescribing statins" was my stand in for doctors following conventional heart health wisdon.)

For a while Sisson was promoting the more advanced bloodwork tests that measure sizes of platelets, and seemed to downplay the risk of higher LDL numbers. Recently he wrote that now it appears those advanced test are not accurate enough to use. Maybe I'm getting this wrong, but basically he said (or used to say) don't worry about your LDL number if the advanced tests show your particle sizes to be large and fluffy. Now he says those advance tests are NOT reliable. What else will we be wrong about? (edited to add NOT reliable.)

Maybe time will prove that Sisson is right (after all, it took a long time for people to realize that fat doesn't make you fat), but the cost of being wrong could be high.

This is all from memory, so I may have gotten the details of Sisson's views wrong.
