I’ve shot a few matches with the Prodigy since I last posted.  I’ve been happy with it due to the reliability and decent feel.  It took me a few range trips to fine-tune my load and recoil spring weight, and now everything feels right.  With tuning considerations out of the way, now I’m focused on being accurate at speed.  Some good things have been happening in that regard.

What load and spring weight are you using?

  2. Ive been using wolff for a long time, dare I say decades.  The last batch of springs I ordered were delayed by a year due to supply chain issues (I hate that phrase) and I wonder if ultimately that was the issue; mistakes can be made.  I will not hold this against them as it is the first time I have had a problem with any of there springs.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  3. So I got to run it pretty hard this morning with no problems.  I can only guess that it was the spring. It was the only thing replaced and the problem no longer exists.

I replaced the one month(+) old spring for a fresh one of the same weight (#10) and all is good in glock world again.

    Thanks to all.

    Try a 13lbs spring?

So I am ending my 4 to 5 year rein of 165gr bullets.  This will be the last match I use them.  I have already developed a 147gr load and am loading them in preparation.  This is due to about a 50% failure rate of loaded rounds to plunk. I have thousands of rounds that I can not shoot through my G34.  They are fine in the PPC (which I never shoot) or the P-320 (same) but the Glock factory barrel and the KKM will not chamber south american or  european brass loaded with this long bullet.  I know why but I am sure you do to.

So, saying all that I will probably be moving up to an 11 or 12# recoil spring depending on which one feels better, but a 13#?  Oh no, that's what I have in my G35 Limited gun.

    Thanks though.

Wow. Light for a gen 5

Works great, till it doesn't. It noticeably wears pretty quick, probably 3000 rounds or so, I can notice a change in group patterns.

  6. Back from the range. After talking it over with a range buddy we deduced that it was (most likely) the recoil spring.  I put a brand new one in about 4 to 6 week ago. I opened a brand new one and replaced the old (4 to 6 weeks) one and everything went smooth.  I was shooting with other people which I was not expecting but I did shoot about twice the amount of ammo as a normal practice session.

I'm sure it will be fine for the match this weekend.  I wont be able to wring it out till next Tuesday or Thursday.

  7. If I had not been shooting this exact configuration for years I would absolutely agree with that suggestion.

I have been shooting the same load in the same gun for at least four years now.  I honestly don't know if the gun would even cycle with the oem recoil spring and my 165gr loads.

  8. I'm going to the range tomorrow and have, with me, the stock barrel, old tungsten guide rod and a brand new recoil spring.  I will shoot it till it acts up (about 50 rounds) and begin replacing parts until I figure it out.

I will also be cognisant of my right hand thumb.

Thank you all.  I will report back.

  9. You never know. I have been shooting this same gun for about 4 years now, I have a memory grove/thumb rest cut into the frame and use it. Maybe just thumb. Thanks.

  10. Hey all, I have a gen5 g34 that has a few mods (probably 15 thousand+ rounds through it) but nothing new.  However, in the last couple of weeks (I shoot twice a week) as the gun warms up it starts to cycle slower in almost a chugging affect.  I can feel the barrel unlocking almost like its dragging.  When I start my practice session the brass lands where its supposed to but by the end the brass is landing just a foot or so from my feet.  Yesterday I completely stripped it down (nut and bolts) scrubbed cleaned lubed where prescribed and today it did the exact same thing. I examined all the parts as good as I could with my old eyes and notice nothing out of the ordinary.

KKM barrel, JG/Timney trigger, Tungsten guide rod, new Wolff recoil spring (with about 1000 rounds on it and was running fine with the same spring a month ago).

I shoot 60 rounds per session twice a week.  (I have arthritis in my hands)

    any ideas?

  11. OK, so I got how heavy and slow (just above floor) bullets and light springs work for handguns, but what about pcc?

The spring and buffer must play a roll. I load 165gr at about 800fps for my pcc but am getting to much shake when firing more than double taps.

Is the formula the same. ie, light spring and buffer for heavy and slow?

  12. I've been loading 160's for a couple of years now and have the same problem. ATK and Remington brass has about a 90% success rate. All others are relegated to the range ammo pile and about 50% of that will not chamber in my KKM barrel. However my son's Sig 320 will eat that bad batch so its a win win, I guess.

Also, the ammo with the bulged cases run higher velocities. I load to floor with 2.8gr of TG for a 126 pf out of a 5 inch KKM.

  13. Here is what I did with my gen5 34 and it works. Glock Store (SKU 1231) extended tungsten guide rod. Then I got a wolff 10# recoil spring and it pairs perfectly with my 165gr 9mm at a 130ish PF. You can buy several different weight springs an see which one works the best for you.

GS recoil springs are not right. Also, I tried GS new pure tungsten guide rod with no success, you are forced to use their proprietary springs which goes back to my last sentence.

I get accused of shooting "under floor" rounds on occasion. I have on several occasions throughout the last year chronographed them and am always above floor.  That's how well the combination works, for me.  Oh, and a Thug Plug, that took some fitting with the medium back-strap and TT mag extenders, but that's another story.

What powder and how much are you using with 165gr? Can you tell any difference vs 147?

Tight group, 2.7gr, 1.150(oal) 165gr plated=758fps with the KKM bbl.

With the stock glock barrel I bump the powder to a heavy 2.8gr for the same fps. This is a floor load.

The biggest issue I have with this load is badly bulged cases. I use mixed brass and most of the brass gets a significant bulge due to the bullet length and locks my gun up so that I have to use other methods besides my hands to un-jam it.  I go thru every round and kick those ones out to my son whose 320 will eat them just fine.

Newer ATK (fed, cci) and Remington brass works fine, and yes it is a noticeable difference from147gr. More of a push but I think the 10lb recoil spring makes it. Soft going back, soft going forward. The dot never leaves the redicle and if I do my part it doesn't move much.

  15. Ok, everything seems to be working now. I had an after market trigger mechanism housing and installed the factory one but still with the rocket dissconnector. Yes an improvement but.......

Ill be sending it off to JG in a couple of weeks, so we'll see.

  16. Got it, installed it and shot it.  Only a little better than my Vanek trigger but an improvement none the less. However, about one round per mag would not go into battery, just a push with my thumb to go in.

Closer inspection showed that my striker is dragging on the trigger bar. Not a lot but enough.

    Any suggestions?
