  1. let me start out by saying, im coming up on my first year. when I shot with "faster" shooters I tried to shoot faster. maybe not a conscious decision, but in reflection. I was trying to keep up. knowing I was a more accurate shooter that my first couple of showings. I started to mentally breakdown every stage every shot on the "long ride of shame home". What did I really see when the shot broke ? I decided to practice during the week, when the range was empty. several of the consistent top 5 idpa ( master) shooters were there shooting alone. clue #1 the "good " guys practice clue #2 there are wrong ways to practice. in every instance , all stopped their practice and had me join them for one on one "lessons". during one such informal session, after a 1 st round center mass and a 2nd round mike. as I grumbled under my breath he said " well that's where you were aiming when you pulled the trigger. ( light bulb) made perfect sense to me! why am I pulling the trigger off target? I took some shot-up targets home after the match. used paper plates with a quarter size black dot. over the "0" ( IDPA targets.) This was my key, a 1 inch black circle. I have been using a 1911 co2 bb pistol as practice. 2000 bb`s later I realized what "aim small, miss small means" I guess I was just kinda pointing at brown and pulling the trigger before. so armed with my "new perspective" I shot the next 3 match's, breaking my shots when I KNEW where they were going. so I finished in the bottom 10 all three matches. 40 shooters average.....BUT I was top 5 most accurate. now I know where my round went before I transition to the next target. I tried to add some speed last match ( idpa) finished 17th of 34 shooters. couple of head shot misses. Somewhere in the 3 match group of trying to score all "0" or "a" it just kind of dawned on me. " where I was aiming, when I pulled the trigger" ( calling my shots). the best way for me to describe it to you is riding a bike. lots of people tryed to described it too me. But its just got to happen (with practice)on its own. my matches have slowed down in my mind as I reflect on the match "long drive of not so much shame". Now I am going to work on "dot torture drills" and speeding up target transition. 11 match's idpa 4 match's uspsa 4 rifle side match and 4 shotgun side match's my first year. good luck cheers

  2. I regularly shoot at 3 ranges uspsa and idpa. 2 match directors stated " range bag was ok as long as you don't handle ammo. one of the ranges wants you to remove all mags and ammo from belt and person if you go to the table to check your gun. I now make it a point to locate the match director and ask for instruction. I added the gun rug to my bag just to be sure

At a USPSA match, it doesn't matter what they "want".

Fathersday will be my 1 year practical shooting. I'm still in " puppy" mode. Asking as many questions as i can, trying to safely get thru without a dq. But....in the top 5 " most accurate " last 4 matches. The stages have "slowed down". When I miss I know it the second I break the shot. Of late been finishing middle of the pac....won't be long, this puppy will soon be a wolf too

  4. What carver comp did you end up with? Is it the 3 port or 4?

I had the 3 port comp on a glock 22 with a 40/9 barrel. I really liked 3n38 for that comp.

Side by side in a different gun I noticed no difference between hs6 and 3n38 at the same pf. It may be a bit different but with the glock mags slightly limiting oal I would really recommend Hs-6

    Enjoy open!

I would also recommend barrel ports if possible. Perhaps 3 holes at 90° would be nice.

4 and a kkm barrel. Modified the Gen 4/34 with the beaver tail back strap to fit the carver magwell.

Actually if you have Projectile Weight, Bore diameter, Barrel Length and Projectile Velocity you don't need anything else to determine Barrel Pressure. We didn't address the question of Projectile Energy yet, so lets drag that in as well, all of the above can used to calculate it as well.

If I want a Projectile Velocity of 1,300/fps I can choose many different charges, OAL and even argue some case for hard or soft, Pistol or Rifle primers to get there. For the sake of the above physics none of that matters.

As noted in the chain above, what has worked to get me into that 1,300 ft/sec.and plus range is Hogdon HS6 at loads of 7.5 to 7.9gr. OAL 1.150 at an elev. 2490 ft...

Once again these are my loads and no has to, or is expected to try them.

If you have supported reference information that says the calculations I posted are out to lunch feel free to correct me.

I'm always interested in being educated by knowledgeable people.

  5. hello all, coming up on my 1 year anniversary in shooting sports. lots of idpa match's and more recently more uspsa match's. Started with g34 to shoot both. went to a Kimber 1911 for idpa and a tanfoglio limited in 40 s&w for uspsa, love the tanfog. so I have acquired a kkm /carver combo and c-more/carver combo for the now shelved g34. I would like to try some major loads in a barebones open gun. ( range time only ,no match) I have plenty of titegroup. I tried 5.5 over 124 and the comp seemed to work ok, showed no signs of primer stress. In hindsight this babe in the woods approach is dangerous to say the least. I was wondering if anyone would share a "starting Major load" with me ? ( installed the c-more) and itching to try it out. thanks in advance

    cheers

  6. bag in current configuration holds 2 long guns, 2 pistols , 4 / 30round ar mags , 10 single stack mags , 5 dbl stack mags, 5 /50rnd box factory pistol ammo. pouch on back for extra ammo.

25 shotgun shells, outers cleaning kit /w full-size cleaning rod, tool kit, glasses, head phones and 2 single point slings. room to stow wallet, keys etc. and one 6x7x4 pouch on back that is unused.

you can pack it all in the house , throw the strap over your shoulder and tote it all out to the car one trip.

  7. 2nd uspsa match, shotgun side match. CORE shooting solutions, great facility. shooting the "new gun" tanfoglio 40 limited. the gun ran flawless, all felt good. Miss two FTE "hidden" targets on one stage and one on another stage. other than that all felt good. A`s and B`s mostly 3 mikes for the whole 160 rnd match. Tried to speed up some of the double taps. Front sight came right back to target. exactly 260 rounds out of this gun to date. Have not seen the score yet. IDPA and rifle side match tomorrow.

  8. the continuing saga, shot my first uspsa match. core shooting solutions baker Florida. what a fantastic facility. used my g 34 I have shot 14 IDPA match's up to that date. I finished 36 of 54 shooters @%49 percent. I really don't even know how to score these matches yet. took my time placed my shots. my first attempt on a Texas star went well. lots of A`s but like I said, didn't try to worry about the time. more getting thru the match safely and being as accurate as possible and not getting DQed. signed up for the next one, running a new pistol. tanfoglio limited 40. on another note our IDPA club is expanding into 2 gun matches. we have been running shot gun and rifle side matches after idpa. Now evolved into dedicated 2 gun. so one fathers day idpa match has turned into a full blown hobby. I couldn't`t be happier about that. IDPA marks man, about to shoot my 2nd uspsa match, have little by little acquired the gear needed to be competitive enough for a 55 year old, over weight diabetic. The most surprising part of this journey, is the people I have met. From the masters to the NV shooters, without exception. Everyone is more than willing to give advice, help in anyway ( forget to bring a mag. 6 people will walk up with mags, "here you go") Anyone thinking about trying this sport, don't lurk and try to learn. Go shoot a match. I am a safer, better, more aware shooter for it. my 2 cents

  9. I used my match breakdowns to understand where I needed the most work. dry fire , dry fire. at the range dry fire mixing in live. I used a plate rack at 20yrd. dry fire 3 4 times. load 1 round pull, acquire fire. Slow, being aware of every aspect. where was my finger on the trigger?, what did my sight picture look like? where did my round impact? slow slow. break down your dry fire, I set timer for random. buzzer, place hand on pistol. really break it down, repeat till your hand lands in that "sweet" spot every time. move to the next movement, draw and grip. i probably just put my hand on my gun several thousand times. I am 55 and 60 lbs over weight. I will shoot my 8th match Sunday. I came in the bottom ten when I started, I finished in the top ten last match. Breaking the movements down with dry and live fire has converted everything from thought to reflex. pistol cleared the holster correctly , my stance and my grip are correct. I feel relaxed and almost in slow motion, I`m smiling inside as I break the shot. For me, all this has enabled me to focus on the making the shot. For me "slow and smooth = speed and accuracy" one other dry fire that helped me. put a small piece of tape on the wall and practice pulling the trigger with out the gun moving at all. I watch TV and dry fire at the spot of blue tape. I am a newbee and am in no position to be giving advise ! just sharing what has helped me thus far. cheers

  10. finished 6th over all ! second in my division. all the practice and dry fire must be helping. It seems the slower I seem to go the better I shoot. I just started printing the " scenario" and trying to imagine it. dry fire warm up at match. ( I am a member), so I just go to a hot bay and dry fire; draw / sight picture . so 9th match shooting g34, 6th overall. still having a blast !

  11. Hello barebone1 and anybody else that might read this. This is my first reply on this forum, just signed up, have heard so much about this forum. All good.

Your post here was really fascinating to me as I shot my first idpa match about 2 months ago. I was probably the worst ever with a handgun, when I was in high school all our kin folk lived in Texas and I remember goin out horse back riding with my uncle and came up on a decent size rattlesnake. I had my dad's Hi Standard 22 snub nose revolver, can't remember what my uncle had(I'm 60 now), my uncle said shoot it, so all 9 shots never sniffed the snake, I still have nightmares of that snake laughing at me. So fast forward to about 3 years ago when I happened to catch one of the shooting shows with Jerry Miculek, Clint Upchurch and that crowd at one of there competitions. I had no idea that kind of shooting was possible out of a handgun.

So number one on my bucket list was born, learn to shoot a handgun bein drawn from a holster and enter some kind of local competition. Well several thousand rounds later and hours upon hours of dry firing did nothing to prepare me for that buzzer. Good grief I knew I was gonna be nervous but had no idea it would be that bad. I've shot in 4 small local matches and my goal was not to be last and not get DQ'ed. Accomplished that but not much more. Go absolutely brain dead at the buzzer.

If I had do overs I would have started competing probably 6 months sooner. Skill wise I was ready, not a pro by any means but my draws and accuracy, safely handling the gun were good enuff to start but was so looking forward to it but scared to death at the same time so kept putting it off. But at this point I would be so much better at "playing the game".

Needless to say I have been bit by the bug and look forward to hopefully improving with each match. I started with a Glock 34 but I've shot the matches with my Kimber Custom 2 which I've had about 6-7 months, love the 1911! Sorry this is so long but I felt like I was rite there with you and thx for taking the time to share that and hopefully you will keep updates coming, I really enjoy hearing, well, actually reading about other folks experiences.

Great post! So my news, esp. marksman. In both classifier. A 160 the first time 4weeks ago and a 164 Sunday glock 34 (magwell) that's why esp. The even better news....I am having a blast (pun intended ) can't wait to shoot next Saturday

  12. I got a tanfoglio co2 1911 ( replica) blow back "BB" .177 to practice in the back yard. welded up a mini plate rack and set up some discarded IDPA targets in the back yard.= BB time. it has been great help. my shooting on the run has drastically improved. I have been running draw / first shot drills on the mini plate rack. that is probably the reason I shot my Kimber better than the glock. my practice has been 1911 BB. my draw /first shot times have dropped from 1.9`S to 1.3-1.5

  13. Shot my first qualifier. 17 th out of 34 shooters. Shooting was much better. Dropped 2 mags on ground /stage 3 . Got 2 procedurals. Finish @ 161. First shooter was at 96. I am getting better. Shot a "pracitice " qualifier Sunday. Used my Kimberly 1911 45 acp instead of the g34 and shot a 121.??????? (No procedural deduction for mags.) Maybe because I know what to expect.????

  14. UPDATE match #5, 10th overall out of 26 shooters. good solid hits. went slower and tried to "stick" my targets. bought a timer and set "beep 1.4 sec beep. using the bb gun I practiced every other day....beep draw and fire a "0" before the second beep. m.y draw and 1st shot "0" is now 1.1-1.2 with little effort. however the timer will not pick up the bb gun sound so no split time.I felt way more comfortable this match. shot 2nd in my division. ( only 4 shooters, lol) thanks to an opportunity to shoot a private range with some fellas who have shot the fort brag 3 gun. They were practicing for a GFFS match, and had the complete setup. got some great pointers and technique corrections from those guys. That also was a major contributor to my10th overall. Quite an eye opener to realize," going slower greatly increased my scores". Liked shoot the "plate rack" best. I was running a 4.6 plate rack by days end.

  15. fourth match. 24th out of 38 shooters. feel more comfortable when the buzzer goes off.

purchased a tanfoglio 1911 co2 blow back pistol and practice out in the yard. great tool for "shooting on the move" you can just see the bb at 300fps. helped with my accuracy. also "dryfire" in the house just using the co2 to reset the trigger and the glow back seem to help with a realism feel. ( my wife has given me some looks) for doing it in the house. but I have not been banned YET. settled in with the G34 for match #4

Horrible 3rd match trying to use my para p14. stage 1 was ok and them it was the ftf nightmare. if you don't clean and silicone the mags after every use you have trouble. finished 34 out of 36 shooters.

prep for match # 5 30 days out.......get in 15 hrs of BB time, ever other day. salvaged some of the used targets set up a stage in the yard and shoot bb`s. dry fire inside on non bb days 1/2 hour session. work on slowing it down in my head and "seeing it" advance , target , trigger. smooth easy no rush no pressure...looking for zen

  16. IDPA because everything else is at least 1;45 away. my local range sadly, only shoots idpa. up date on the moving and shooting at the same time. shot 3rd match today, practice with the bb pistol in the yard was an immense help. moving and shooting was smooth and felt natural. still shot some 1`s and 3`s, but 100% better than before. was doing better, till I needed 3 per side in a double swinger. So......looks like I will be welding up some kind of swinger for the yard bb range.

    cheers
