  1. Cross posted from General gunsmithing.

My 2011 .38 super is running about 50% light primer strikes. I've used Atlanta arms ammo major pf as well as reloaded rounds as low as 140 pf. I've also used my same ammo through a new sti open gun and it runs flawlessly. The rounds that fire show a smeared primer strike on the spent primer. Stronger firing pin spring? Heavier mainspring? Different firing pin? The Gun is as is STI. I bought the gun with this issue. Thanks for any help, Tony

  2. Hey guys. I have a open 2011 that are having light primer strikes. Tried Atlants arms ammo and reloads with every brand of primers. At 170 ish power factor, the primers that fire have a washed out look th them instead of a distict dimple. It is chambered in .38 super. Tried the same ammo through another sti open gun and the dimples look perfect. Any help please. Thanks, Tony

  3. Ok guys, I just ordered a egw 7 port cone comp and reverse guide plug with full length rod with hole. My gun is a 5 inch 1911 dedicated steel gun in 9mm. I run the open class with this gun with a cmore and v-10 ported barrel. The barrel is a bushing/ramped stainless barrel and the ports start 1.20 from the end of the barrel. I'm sure the cone with cover a couple of port holes and that is ok.

Can anyone that has installed a cone comp give me some tips on threading the barrel and completing this installation?

Cutting the threads isn't a issue just not sure on how far to cut the threads back. I'm guessing I would cut as far back as I can without the barrel covering any of the comp ports.

My other question is will the slide bump the edge of the cone when going into battery. Never used or installed one before. A friend is helping me and has a complete machine shop but he is not a armorer. I will have to tell him what I need him to do. Thanks for any help.

  4. I loaded 2 loads for comparison today.

1st was 124 grain copper playted with 3.5 grains of w231. Cycled fine in a 1911 with ported barrel and made 850 fps.

2nd load was a115 copper plated with 4.5 grains of autocomp. Chronoed 900 fp.

Ther was a ver distinct feel between the loads. The w231 was soft at 850 but the autocomp was way softer at a higher velocity. Felt like a airsoft gun. I'm going down to 4.2 of autocomp just to see how fast and if even softer. Using for steel challenge.

  5. Hey guys, great site with some great info. I'm sure I'm gonna have a few questions to come. My name is Tony and primarily shoot scsa open class at Brock's Gap range in Bham. I shoot about 500 rounds a week and am a mad scientist on trying different loads and data.

I also have a competition Facebook group called SpeedSouthShooting if anyone is interested.

    Thanks for having me.
