Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. So I bought a lightly used 550 today for $100 (I know a steal right) the issue is that the primer feeder is totally missing. From what I was told the press is at least 20 years old (sellers father passed away and doesn't think his dad has done any reloading in at least 20 years) so my question is, are there any differences I should look for on this press vs a new one? And what is the best way to purchase a new primer feeder? I figure calling Dillon on Monday is going to be the #1 reply but I am really curious what it's going to cost me to get this press running. Thanks Troy
  2. I am having a weird issue with my 45 acp loads right now. I'm loading berry's 230 gr rn on top of 5.0 gr of w231. Shooting them out of my fnx.45 at 7 yards they are decently accurate (just plinking rounds) I can shoot at a decent cadence and put all 15 in the head of a target but at 50 ft they shoot 5-9 inches high and about 6 in either side of center. I tried two mags worth and all 30 rounds were erratic. Any suggestion or ideas on where to start on solving this issue? I originally put these round together for my 1911 and went off the decent accuracy out of it at 7 yards not thinking to try longer range. And haven't had a chance to see if the inaccuracy is there with the 1911. Thanks in advance Troy
  3. I also just started reloading on my first progressive last night. I bought a 550b and couldn't be happier. After I figured out the primer magazine problem (didn't realize the actual magazine was different from large to small?) I was able to work up a load for .40 s&w. Tested them today and came back home and blew through 100 more in about 20 mins. Then tonight I changed tool heads primer system and worked up my previous 45 acp load. And was able to put together about 150 without any problems what so ever. I am so glad I believed what I read on the Internet and drank the blue kool aid. Now time to go to tool head #3 and get 9mm set up.
  4. Thank you guys for the responses. I think I'm going to go ahead with the deluxe change overs, I think I will be happier in the long run. And I know not to back myself into a corner with the powder, iI was just saying i will probably buy 5 lbs of something and use it in all three rounds. So i have lee 3 die setups for 9 mm and 45 so my understanding is i will either need to purchase the lee factory crimp dies for both or the Dillon crimp dies to use in the 4th stage on the 550 because it seats and crimps on separate stages. Is this correct? Thank you again
  5. Im in Cottonwood, AZ geographical center of the state. I have done quite a bit of research and decided to go with the 550 cause it fills all my needs
  6. So Im gonna ask the question you guys probably get all the time but hopefully you can answer some if not all of my questions. With my tax refund money this year im going to buy a rl550b, I have reloaded about 600 rounds of 45 acp on my single stage rcbs and got frustrated with the amount of time it takes to produce even 100 rounds. I like shooting not necessarily reloading. I have a 45 acp a .40 cal and a 9mm that i want to be able to reload. I am only looking to reload maybe 300 rounds of each per month. I want to go with the rl550b because at some point i might add .223 and very slim chance but maybe some .308 to the list. my question is i am wanting to use one powder for all three rounds currently w231. which according to lymans is very doable, and all three loads seem to be fairly close in charge weight. So my real question is in your opinion should i go ahead and purchase the press plus two deluxe change overs to make it super simple to change over or because of the close powder changes (maybe 1 grain up or down depending on caliber) should i just adjust each time? Second question should i purchase a second primer system to keep one in large for my 45 and the second in small for the other two to assist in quick change over or is converting one over an easy enough process that i dont need to? Another question i have is that i currently have lee dies for 9mm and 45acp. Should i buy the set of dillon dies to keep thing simple or use some of what i have and buy the parts to fill in. The root of these questions in my my is really because im not planning to do long runs of any caliber (finances through the year dont allow it) I know the real correct answer to all this is buy a press for each caliber and call it good but the wife would kill me pulling a stunt like that. I have built a cart onthe dillon website for everything individually (deluxe chane overs, caliber conversions, dies, extra pickup tubes spare parts strong mount) and it comes in just under $1100 which is fine with me but if i can responsibly save money anywhere that means i can add other upgrades to my reloading setup ie digital scale case trimmer (currently borrowing a buddies) stuff like that. Thank you for any help or insight all of you may have. Troy
