  1. Today is a very special day. All of my big parts are here. Now I can start fitting it all together. I cheated and picked up a slide from Brazos. I'm not sure if what I'm doing qualifies as gunsmithing, maybe gun-assembling or gun-fitting?  I don't have the tooling, skill or knowledge to hang with the machining that you boys are cranking out. Thanks for not banning me from this thread yet!

GB3, How so? What do you think went wrong with installing it?

It looks good to me? They have to be blended to the slide. They are left a little long and sometimes a little wide. The 2 I have installed had to be fit to the slide.

I haven't fitted the slide to the frame yet. As long as I don't have to take too much off the deck of the frame in that process, I think I'll be alright. If I need to take more than a couple thou off, I figure the ejector will drop down too far and the ejector pin notch will have to be re-drilled. That might turn the drilled notch into more of a slot, leaving the ejector to slop up and down on the ejector pin. Potentially.

  3. I pulled a set off the prize table and now I'm debating buying the SP-01 to go with them, since they are so highly regarded. They're also 20% of the cost of the pistol, so I'm pretty sure I can convince myself I'm getting some sort of discount and/or deal.

I enjoy the props that make this match unique and unlike any other. If you cant step out of a 12" high tire or are scared to fall off a 5' tall roof with a loaded gun, maybe this match just isn't for you.

Area 3 has had gimmick props and raised wood platforms ever since it moved to Grand Island.  I'm not sure why people that don't like this stuff sign up for the match year after year, and bitch about it year after year..

A large portion of the DQ's were caused by pulling a rope to drop a hard cover wall. The rope was EXTREMELY hard to pull and caused most shooters that chose to pull it to fly backwards when the pin dropping the hard cover wall finally popped out. That is my only criticism of the stages.

The speed in which the activator rope was pulled on the random swinger thing seemed to have an effect on how it was presented on the first "pass." That was in the shooters control, so I'm cool with that.

IMO, best assessment so far. I dig the "novelty" of this match. If I wanted to shoot the same major match over and over, I'd never leave PASA Park.

Yep, I've done 2.  Both required removing around .008" off the bottom and a few thousandths off the frame rails.  Great combo IMO.

The ones I have done needed around .005" to .009" removed from the bottom of the slide before it would start on the rails. Then about .003" to .006" off of the outside edges of the frame rails before it would slide on completely. I would tap it on with a plastic/nylon hammer, you wat it pretty tight at first. Then I would use lapping compound to smooth everything out. Use a new endmill as it will leave the best finish so you don't have too much work left to do by hand.

How do you guys go about removing material from the bottom of the slide rails? Is the a way to do it with files and stones or is this better left to a mill? Thanks!

I have a RO in 45 and Sig Max in 40. The RO is a fine 1911 for the money. Mine had a decent trigger from the factory and was very reliable. I prefer the Max over the RO. For the money that thing is ready to rock. I put a Enos trigger bow with a long insert. Other than that it's bone stock.

Yup. A Sig is tough to beat for the money in the single stack game.

How do you like it GB3?

Sorry, it only took me a year and a half to see your question. In regards to that, I like it a lot. Lots of people told me it was going to be too front heavy/too heavy in general. I haven't experienced any of that. The gun feels nice and quick in my hand. I hope you weren't waiting on this answer, because I'm sure it wasn't worth the wait.
