  1. Hello: One thing I noticed was you seem to can't the gun on some stages and shots (camera angle?). I also noticed that the Dawson magwell is canting your right hand out some so you are not getting full contact on the grip with that hand. Other than that you seem to shoot it well and need to trust the dot like most of us have gone through or still going through. Shooting an open gun does take time to learn and enjoy but once you do it will make you smile every time you shoot it. Thanks, Eric

Are you talking about the gun not being aligned mor with my right hand? I am right handed but left eye dominant. That may be why. Is that what you are talking about?

  2. I shot a match on Sunday with my open gun. It ran flawlessly. I like to record myself to go back and analyze where I slow down. I learned from this one that I am still taking too many make shots. In all the make up shots, I only needed the one on the last classifier stage and 1 somewhere else. I even had a few triple alphas throughout the day.

That is what I am currently working on. That and my first shot out of the holster. I'm not 100% on calling my shots yet, maybe about 60-70% of the time I am good at it.

Here is my day of fun:

  3. I guess I should have measured my current firing pin first. The new one came in and it slightly shorter than the one I am currently using. I put the other main spring that came with the kit and will see how that goes.

    Thanks.

  4. How far out are we talking for a high primer? I checked over about 600 rounds I have made up last night and all of them are flush if not a little further in than flush ( maybe that is just a good batch though). I ordered the firing pin as listed. I didn't make it to the match today so I will have to wait until next week to try again.

    Thanks for all the info.

  5. Hi. I need some help figuring out if I have a primer issue, or a spring issue. About 1 in 400 or so rounds has a light primer strike. It is a smaller indentation on the primer, and always fires if I load try to fire the round a second time.

The gun is a STI Trubor. I installed a Brazos trigger group in it and the trigger pull is right at 2.5 pounds. I am using the stock main spring that came on the gun still. I didn't have this issue before I installed the trigger group. I did it to lighten and smooth out the pull. I knew before I did this that I may have a light primer strike issue to work through. I am using CCI Small Rifle Primers and Winchester Small Rifle Primers. Both brands work almost all the time, but that 1 out of 400 is too much for me. I don't want to loose a second of two in a match because the gun doesn't go bang.

I was expecting that if I had a light primer strike issue it would be more prevalent. Is it possible that the new trigger group I installed is sprung right on the edge of not being strong enough on the hammer? Or should I switch to Federal primers as those are softer? I have the main spring that came with the trigger group that I could cut down as it seems too long, and see if that helps.

I use the 2 brands of primers I listed because I can get them local and don't have to pay a haz-mat fee on top of shipping.

This is the only issue that is keeping my setup from running 100%.

I don't think it is an issue with seating the primers all the way, because I am very careful when loading, and check them all when chamber checking. That being said, I have only been loading my own ammo for about 3000 rounds since I started in February, so there could be something I am not catching.

I am planning on shooting my open setup in a match in Tampa tomorrow so I will plan to react quick if I get a click instead of a bang :).

    Thanks,

    -Wayne

  6. Check out USPSA matches in the Tampa area and possibly Orlando or Frostproof.

Any range that has USPSA matches usually will allow you to practice USPSA.

Quite a few near Tampa - one up in Brooksville (north of Tampa).

p.s. if you find one near Lakeland, let us know.

What is the name of the one in Brooksville, or is there a website with more info? Is it a public range, or do you have to become a member before doing USPSA type stuff?

  7. I have been shooting for almost 1 year now. I have went to a bunch of matches and enjoy them all very much.

I am running into a problem of finding a range that will let me shoot fast for practice and drawing from the holster.

I have 2 local ranges with 1/2 hour drive to me but both have a 1 second per shot rule. This is good just to keep up on my grip and general target shooting, but isn't doing it for me.

The only range I can practice at like I want to charges an extra 10 bucks to stay and use a bay after the USPSA match. I love this and try to make time each match that happens once a month.

Has anyone else ran into this issue? I do my dry fire practice at home, but the only time I get to shoot fast is at a match or at the 1 time per month practice session. I wish there was some place that I could practice how I want anytime.

Is there some search feature I am missing to find "action" range? I don't mind joining a club, or even driving an hour if I have to.

    I live in lakeland, florida.

    Thanks,

    -Wayne

  8. I built one. It is the DJI 550. It is much bigger. I actually was trying to sell it a while back but decided to keep it after a while.

It has a go pro on a gimbal that is stabilized. Takes great video. Flies for about 8 minutes. I can control the camera angle from my remote. It has return to home. And it works great. When I was heavy into flyng RC helis before I got into shooting. My friends and I had several of them.

  9. Hello: What is the problem? Open is not as easy as people think it is. They figure a dot just makes the whole thing easier. Put the dot on paper and pull the trigger. It is not that easy. You have to learn to shoot a little different with both eyes open and more target focused. The quickness of the slide cycle and the noise effects some to cause a flinch. If you tell us what you are not liking maybe we can help you out. I shoot all different guns, maybe to often but I do enjoy shooting them all. Thanks, Eric

I love shooting the dot and I don't have any issue with both eyes focused on the target. I did find it tricky to shoot fast with the dot because I always tried to track it up and down on each shot and time it just right for the second shot. I realized that because of the comp and my grip I could pretty much double tap it and get an A on the first shot and a B/C on the second shot (sometimes even a second A). If I get Ds i know i need to slow down some. I was working on trying to be able to get mostly A/B shots and tried a few different amounts of grip and got it worked out pretty good.

  10. To be honest I had a red dot on my M&P core that I played around with and I liked that. So I thought I would like shooting a full on open gun. I enjoy all the reloads in production since I can only put 10 rounds in a mag instead of 27. I also enjoy the stage breakdown part of it and my strategy of when to do reloads. With my open gun, most stages I shoot don't require a reload unless I miss a bunch. At the matches I shoot at there are also a lot more people shooting production or limited. Usually only a few shooting open. I enjoy that part of it too (shooting against people on the squad that have similar equipment).

I have only been shooting for about 9-10 months or so and I think I jumped the gun (no pun intended) getting into open too soon. I saw those fancy wiz-bang futuristic blasters and just had to have me one. I find myself enjoying the production division more. I just actually got a CZ for production division after the open gun so I will be shooting it for a while.

  11. Well I thought I would enjoy open division shooting my new Trubor more than I do. I find myself still liking my iron sight guns better. Has anyone else experienced this? I just invested a bunch of money a few months ago and am not sure I want to continue with shooting open and may go back to shooting production division. If I decide to sell my open setup, is the forum classifieds the best place to place the stuff or does the gun broker website work good too? I have only bought a few things on gun broker, but never sold anything.

    Thanks.
