Don't show up with new shoes, or an untested anything. Definitely don't go changing spring rates the night before.
This ^^. Learned that as a marathoner - don't eat anything, drink anything, or wear anything you haven't used in training. No new thumb rests, springs, mag holders, or other gear. Any modifications to your gear should be done enough ahead of time that you've tested them.
And all the other stuff too. Especially getting there ahead of time to walk the stages. You may get to see staff shoot as well and see some approaches to the stages. Diagrams can be misleading, and sometimes the stages get changed.
And shoot like you know how to shoot. You're more likely to have a good time and less likely to make mistakes if you don't act like you have to shoot like the cool kids.
One more thing - drop your mag before you rack the slide on unload and show clear. That error got me to Dairy Queen early on in my first major.

Well, I went open pretty soon after setting up a CO rig with a Springfield Armory XDM5.25, and have not used the CO gun in a match since then.
-
Use the arrows. The FF3 shows "up" to be counterclockwise.
-
Recently bumped everything up to 8 because just having too much trouble in strong sunlight.

Reading through all these, I keep thinking about the meaning of "make ready." Essentially, you're not supposed to do anything that "makes ready" until the RO tells you to. So no manipulation of anything to make the gun ready.

Been using CCI small pistol magnum (550) in Akai 9mm major without any issues.

All the cool kids were shooting open. And I got a helluva bonus at the end of last year.

It's the same logic as getting penalized on Virginia stages for extra shots (taken at the line) and extra hits (scored on the target.
-
I'm pretty slow too, but I like the game and being an RO gives me a chance to contribute and be more involved.

I've heard what we do described rather accurately as "golf with guns" hahahah
Golf with guns, literally...

Here's a non-safety-related opportunity to get DQ'd question - Go to safe area to take gun out of case. As you start to take it out, you realize there is a snap-cap in the gun that did not get removed after dry fire practice. Let's assume you didn't pop the snap-cap out racking the slide. But you know it's there. What do you do?
I assume you leave gun in case and go find an RO to take you to a bay, unload and show clear, and move on from there. Sound right?

Is he using them for USPSA ? Using a comp ?
Know what powder he's using ?
Any idea WHY he's doing that ?
Love to hear some more details about that, if you happen to know them.
Yes USPSA and Yes comp.
Powder I think is AA7.
Why? Damned if I know. I'll see him Sunday, I think, and I'll ask some more questions.

If all shooters have the option of shooting any of the poppers and each individual popper reacts consistently, there is no issue with this array. It is the shooters responsibility to choose an order of engagement to suit their shooting skills and stage plan.

147's no kidding.

Yeah, surprised me too. He gave me a few to try and they struck me as relatively soft. I noticed in another thread that Atlanta sells 9mm major 147s.

I gauge everything. Load a hundred, run them through the gauge and check for high primers, move on. Only takes a couple minutes, one less thing to worry about.

Here's an off topic question but can you run 135g bullets through an open gun or is best to stick with the 115's and 124's?
I'm using 125s but I loaded up some of the 135s I've been using for production and they ran fine. Did not really feel a difference from the 125s, but then again I was just curious and haven't tested it seriously. On another note, a friend of mine who is GM in open is running 147s these days.

I made a hobby out of that at a major last year. Ugh.

I've purchased two from Oak Hill and one from CZ Custom and good experiences with both.

Agree with Sarge and DKorn

Unless you're a really high-end and high stakes competitor, your backup is mainly there so you won't have to go home if your primary goes down. Nice to have a backup that's at least reasonably close, and carry a small spare parts kit.

I ran 180 RNFP in my TS without a problem until I started rolling my own.

A little off the topic of which gun, but it sounds like you're going to make your first match a major? Lots of stages, assume Level 2? If that's the case, I strongly suggest you find time for a local or two first.

I'm in kind of the same situation as OP, having just started shooting open. "Finding the dot" on my draw was a struggle. It's getting a lot better, though, primarily through lots of dry fire time. Slow and deliberate at first, then adding the timer and gradually shrinking the par, bringing the gun up to the target in a way that has the dot where I need it. Still plenty of work to do, but the progress has been there.
How did you do at your first match?

My first match I managed not to get DQ'd, and I did hit most of the targets, but my buddy took video and the whole thing looked like slow motion. Shoot...shoot...step...step...step...shoot...shoot etc.
TBH I'm not that much faster now...
