  1. That happened to me to some extent because I "overenthusiastically" cleaned my Wilson and CMC 10rd mags by shoving a mag brush through the lips. The mags lips expanded and sometimes rounds would be allowed to sit up too high in the lips causing feed problems. In the worst cases round would just jam in the mag inside the gun. Sometimes the mags would not drop free because of this, although some would. Some of the mags I did this to I was able to beat back into shape.

  2. Joe D,

How do you like the STI Trojan compared to the Kimber? In particular the barrel/slide/frame fit. I've been eyeing the Trojan for some time and am impressed by the fit of the ones I've seen (plus reports), but am no expert, and I respect your appearent knowledge.

  3. For those Eager to discount this gun I would suggest an actual inspection and testing of it previous to calling it crap. National origin in itself does not make a product inferior.

I did not call it crap nor berate it's country of origin. Yet I don't hear any details as to why this gun is expected to be so great, nor that it is anything more than an Armscor/Rock Island/Charles Daly with different cosmetics and a few STI parts (some of which are MIM) sprinkled in. I haven't heard STI claim they have done anything to approach the barrel/slide/frame fit that make Trojans and other single stack STIs worth buying, along with distiguishing features like a great out of box trigger, flat top, and undercut triggerguard. Armscor/Rock Island/Charles Daly guns are already available. Do you advocate them? How will (other than cosmetics, and a few STI parts) the Spartan differ from Armscor/Rock Island/Charles Dalys?

  4. I'm afraid I'm not impressed.

This is an Armscor (Philippean) gun with STI slide cuts and some STI parts. It doesn't have what makes STI guns like the Trojan great. Doesn't have the frame/slide/barrel fit that makes the Trojan worth buying over other guns. Nor does it have the undercut triggerguard nor the flat top of the Trojan. The STI parts are the least thing I like about the Trojan. Some are MIM. Other than the STI slide cuts and parts, isn't this just a Pilippean 1911. If so why not tout the greatness of the Rock Island or Dan Wesson?

  5. I've got a set of VZ grips, a set of Alumagrips, and several good wood grips, as well as rubber. VZs are good but I like wood significantly better. I've had constant headaches with the Alumgrips continually coming loose after just a few rounds, even when using purple Loktite, and teflon tape. I finally seem to have resolved it by backing the entire grip with electrical tape. I normally wouldn't like the feel of aluminum grips, but I've covered mine with TRUGRIP grip decal things, and the grip/feel is really great. Even so, I don't recommend them because the rewards (the extrat grippines) is not so much better than good wood that it justifies the extra hassles with the loosening aluminum and extra work in adding and maintaning the grip tape.

I recommend good double diamond wood grips like those in cocobolo from Esmeralda or Ahrends. The grip is right, feels good to the touch, no loosening problems because wood gives.

  6. Well I got the Linksys (thanks George) and have left it at Mom's along with your instructions George. It looks like it will all work and fit the need well and dear old Mom is exited. :)

Just waiting for the cable guys now.

I hooked it all up and it worked! :)

    Thanks for those instructions George.

  7. The mag catches on the 2011 look just the same to me as those on SS 1911s. So try what I said.

    Step by step it's:

stick your scew driver blade in the slot

Push on the mag release to move it in a bit

push in on the screw driver and try to turn it

move the mag release in and out feeling for the spot where the "screw" will turn

at some spot the "screw" will turn. Turn it all the way which will be one quarter turn

The mag release can then be removed

  8. If it's the same as a single stack mag catch you push the mag catch button in a bit then depress the mag catch "screw" and give it a quarter turn. This should release the mag catch. It's not a screw at all, but a quarter turn thing. There's a sweet spot on the mag catch such that at just the right depth (pushed in) with a screw driver blade in the "screw" slot pushing against it, the "screw" will make a quarter turn, relaesing the mag catch.

If the STI double stack is not like a 1911 single stack them forget all this.

  9. Baseplate is welded on. Push the follower down with something plastic or wood, then stick a wire or rod through one of the side holes to hold the spring back a bit. The follower can then be removed out the top. Carefully remove the wire and let the spring out. Note the way the guts are configured for re-install. Clean the mag body from the top. I like to swish them in some cheap Isopropyl alcohol I get in big bottle from Wal-Mart. Leaves no residue.

  10. This was happening to me the other day. Weird cuts on the outside diameter of the rims and some nasty jams where the new cartridge wouldn't feed, but the mag wouldn't eject either. It looked like the mag lips were cutting the nicks, and the lips were expanded causing the mags to jam in the well. Later I noticed that several of my mags seemed to have expanded lips causing them not to drop free. I rubber malleted them back into shape. I have been looking for the rim cuts, but they haven't showed up in my last two outings, so I don't know what caused them or why they went away. This was with a single stack 1911.

  11. At least they weren't killer bees. My mother in law was attacked just a few months ago. She was stung maybe thousands of times. They killed her dog. She had to "scrape them off her face". She escaped by getting in a nearby creek.

Of course, she lives in Costa Rica. We were just there a few months earlier.

  12. Do these fit single stack 1911s?

The whole Brazo's parts thing seems to be oriented toward double stacks, and I never understood what (if any) parts are the same for doublestacks and single stacks.

I'd love a nice $16 extractor. And slide stop for that matter.

  13. Was talking to a friend who is a gunsmith today. He just got thru working on a Taurus 1911 and said to stay away from them. In his opinion they are junk. Just passing along what I heard.

If he is your friend, could you get some details as to what he doesn't like. Otherwise this opinion is sort of...worthless.

  14. The buddy and I have decided we need to do drills to help us improve. I've been competing in USPSA for a year and a half, he's been doing it for a few months. We have access to the pistol bays, so for a few months now we've practiced by setting up a mock stage and just done it over and over without a timer. We'd now like to start doing some skill building drills but don't really know which to start out with. Someone suggested the Bill Drill, so we're ready to try that, and even will likely have a borrowed timer.

Any other suggested drills for first time "drillers"?
