  1. With the setup of the pictures posted above. Not a single issue. I cranked out the rounds as fast as I could pull the handle. I only loaded 100 rounds, as I need to chrono them before doing a bigger run. But no smashed primers. I only had 1 round with a bullet upside down and I am doubting that was the fault of the priming system :).. In the past I would see 1-2 rounds with messed up primers per 100..

The shoulder of the swag rod was just touching the bottom of the brass. I figured when all the stations are full, it would be spaced a little further away. I might try backing it off a touch. But getting a 100 rounds with no wasted primers has me not wanting to change anything.. I think it was multiple things not set correct, the white tab, blue plastic on the primer tube worn out/damaged, and the swag rod adjustment.

Thank you everyone for your guidance. Just wish I would have sought help on this issue much sooner.

Glad it worked out for you. Now go shoot!!

  2. Swag rod got here this afternoon. And of course I ran to the press and installed it..

Here is how it is setup.

To me, it does not seem like it is removing the crimp all the way around the primer pocket.

    I haven't tried priming yet..

"To me, it does not seem like it is removing the crimp all the way around the primer pocket."...

I don't think it has to...In my experience 40% 50% 60 % of the ring smoothed out is enough to accept a primer. I do want to hear your results of this set up... If I can help I'd like to!!

  3. Just saw some N320 come in here. They can keep it for 59.99 per pound!!!

We are beginning an inflationary cycle here in the US....I don't like rising prices either nor will I get stuck in the "good o' days when powder was..."

I buy what's available and shoot it. And live life... No need to buy the next 10 years worth...just 4 pounds here and there

Rod adjustment looks good. Crimp rings have changed a bit from before/after pics...only one way to find out!

Hope it works...post picks of the results. Best of luck!

  5. Speed I wouldn't think would be an issue. automated press going 1000-2500 hour don't universaly see this issue. My opinion is that it's a swaging issue. Softer winchester primers are more forgiving. ..cci will demand a heavily swaged pocket

Worth a shot. I cut down a brass 9mm case, looks like my swaging depth could be increased. I've been running a variety of primers types, Fiocchi, Win, Tula and Federal, no CCI. I haven't narrowed the issue by primer type but your explanation makes sense.

I re-tuned my swaging setup, and increased my swaging depth. Much improved but not perfect. I set the swage depth just a little deeper. Last night I was running 100 / 2.5 minutes 100% clean for 700 rounds straight, and I was even running Tula primers!

    Thanks for the tip Spitboy!

Glad I could be of some help!

    Happy safe shooting!

  6. I've ordered and received more than once this year, sometimes via winning the Powder Valley lottery (getting there at the right time ...), also by regularly checking all the major folks, also if/when any offer ability to backorder, to take advantage of that. Get on the alerts for stock, watch the threads for 'in stock powder, get some friends to hunt with you. (Powder Valley, Grafs, 3rd Generation Shooting Supply, MidSouth Shooters Supply, Midway USA, Brownells, etc.)

If you consistently put the work in, over time you'll get some. If you don't have the time to do that, use the info above to Fetterly, he'll ship, just view his premium on items and shipping as $$ in exchange for the time you didn't have to put in hunting for it, and being able to get NOW :-)

do you think it will be less available since VV was sold to another company? Company sale can sometimes result in supply issues...?

I believe it's just distributed by Hodgdon now, not sure that VV was sold....

Vihtavuori was bought last year from Eurenco by the Nammo Group (Lapua's parent company). Supply was heavily disrupted for a while, things are getting better with VV supply since the sale, not worse.

    I stand corrected.

Well, not entirely wrong, it is distributed by Hodgdon and is still challenging to obtain. :goof:

Seems easier in West coast for some reason...East coast has always been tight on getting supplied

  7. A suggestion for those inclined. I posted this video on another thread but if you jump to 1:46 you can see a led beam break sensor that I rigged up to a power relay that cuts power if the beam is obscured for more than 3 sec.

I have these sorts of jams often with 9mm processing military brass. This works great. If the hopper fills and jams then the beam break will cut power to the case sorter and keep you from raining shells all over the place

Jump to 1:46 to see the sensor

Neat, but we shouldn't have to band aid sensors to fix a design issue.

Yea... totally agree. If you come up with a reliable design fix that you can fabricate...put me down for one!

  8. Cascade sectional for USPSA. Easiest to get to from Portland is probably Dundee. My absolute favorite match. There is also a Practical Pistol match at Tri-County Gun Club in Sherwood. TCGC has a local rule that forbids muzzles above the berm so they can't hold official USPSA matches. It's a fun match, but can't hold classifiers.

There is 3 gun at TCGC, Douglass Ridge (Eagle Creek) and Albany. Steel Challenge at all 3 also.

TCGC has official IDPA matches, several Cowboy action matches, Practical rifle, and the "Tactical" match. The Tactical match is a 3 gun match using pistol caliber carbine, IDPA like cover and pistols from concealment.

You can shoot something almost every day of every weekend within and hour of Portland.

I wondered why Tri-County didn't have something. Thanks for the education. And Hello from the Couve!...I see your in PDX Smitty....sure was a nice day yesterday!!!

  9. Blue Dot, AA7, and AA9 are excellent choices (I find AA7 to produce about the same velocities in a handgun as AA9, but AA9 might be better for a longer barrel). Other options, if you can find load data, are LongShot, 2400, Enforcer, N110, 296/H110, and Li'l Gun.

I may be able to get some AA9...how well does it meter??

I had orders from two different retailers May 2014, which was what, 5 months after they were bought by Nammo (parent of Lapua)? Then two different orders after that last year and this. So I had better luck 2014+ than I did in 2013 before they were sold, if I've got the timeline correct.

great...it sounds easier to get import powder than domestic...is it because domestic is getting loaded into cartridges and sold en mass and not sold as reloading powder? missing some win 231 about now

  11. 155gn jacketed bullet and 231/HP38: 6.5-7.0gn start, 7.3-7.7gn MAX. I always start at lowest starting load.

Need a slower powder to "get it rockin."

like blue dot? or what you recommend for a slow powder?
