  1. 5.2.4 A competitor not in the proper start position at the start signal will
incur penalties. This includes competitors shooting the improper number
of strings from the shooting boxes on Showdown. Competitors are
required to shoot three strings from one box and two strings from the
other shot in any combination. Failure to move between boxes after
three strings have been shot from one shooting box shall incur 1
procedural penalty, per string, for each string shot in the wrong box. It is
acceptable to shoot in the 2-2-1 shooting order if the competitor so
chooses; however, 3/2 or 2/3 are acceptable sequences as well. See
    Section 7 for penalty information.

7.4 Procedural Errors: A competitor whose actions are in violation of
specified stage procedures is considered to have committed a procedural
error. Procedural errors will result in a 3 second penalty for each
    occurrence.

  2. I like my S3.  A lot.  In fact, I'm selling my S2 so I can get another S3.  The S3 is a 'little' more weight forward in the hand, and I am easily distracted by the glint of silver around a front sight that is 'too low.'  I like not having a reverse plug on the guide rod - but that's REALLY minor.  The finish on the S3 wears fast, so if you like the 'battle worn' look -an S3 and a few months of practice will give you that nicely.   The other reason folks shoot the S2 is Ben.  He kinda has won a bunch of stuff with his.

  3. They should be exact same reach. Small hands=shoot a cz

They are the same reach. I have both - the S3 has a slightly forward balance. The S2 balances back in the hand more. The S3 was easier to smooth out the trigger - but only slightly. I shoot my S3 almost exclusively because I have a nicer holster for it. On the clock and for score it doesn't matter.

  4. I shoot a stock 3 for 3gun and USPSA production. I would not feel bad if I dropped a Henning mag well on it and did mostly 3gun and limited minor. I like the trigger a lot - no need for a sa only. I did put in a bolo, titan and one piece sear. About a 2# sa trigger. I do shoot the S3 in steel challenge in limited division.
If it feels good in the hand - rock it.

  5. Steel challenge update - with today's match I should be at 90.6% for rfpi
Weather is still pretty chilly - high for the match today was 19f. That does have an effect - more so on my limited work, but even in rimfire it is noticeable. The Ruger has been reliable in the cold for the past few months - not a small feat I think.
Uspsa match tomorrow for the first time in 3 months - should be fun!

If you set your home range and mark the target positions you will only have to do it once.

Well, that would be true if you can see the dirt of your home range more than 6 months out of the year, or don't run a snow plow over the bay, nicely scraping any kind of anchor flags or other embedded objects out of the way.  We're not going to let a little snow and ice prevent us from running a match - so we will do our best to get things set up straight and square, but marking things once and done isn't going to work.  Yea, shooting in Alaska has it's challenges :)

For level 1 matches, encouraged but not required works for me.

  7. This weekend's steel match should put me at 89% for rimfire pistol irons.  Spent a little time modifying my tracking spreadsheet to inIclude not only peak times but top 5 times from the last WSSC - and I have a ways to go before I'm actually competitive. :)  USPSA match was cancelled due to lack of range staff availability - one of the hazards of having a small club.  This week - more whitewall drills, more move and shoot drills/move and reload drills, and prep some stages for the 2 gun match this weekend.  That... is a challenge.  With the range conditions what they are, movement is very minimal for safety reasons.  So coming up with 5 stages that are pretty much stand and deliver that are also interesting can be hard.

  8. Last Steel Challenge put me at 84.98%

Have another one this weekend, and a USPSA match on sunday.

Have been working on two things the past couple weeks - both involving movement.  Reloading on the move, and shooting on the move.  In live fire practice this week, I tripple/quadruple checked the whole post and scoot vs. move and shoot thing.  2 targets - one at 10 yards, one at 15.  Move on the oblique left to right.  Post and move and post with the short distance involved was 3.8-4.0 seconds.  Move and shoot was typically 3-3.1 seconds.  Post/move/post wasn't much different than move/post/shoot.  The HF math works out in favor of shooting on the move if you drop one into the C zone.  It is neutral if you drop 2, and works against you if you drop more than that.  Net net - working on shooting on the move is a core skill to focus on. :)

  9. As expected - this wednesday's steel challenge classification run puts me at 80% in rimfire pistol irons.  Have done 'something' to my shoulder - when I wosteke this morning I couldn't lift my right arm above parallel to the floor.  With heat and some massage it's a bit better.  No more dry fire this week - just some visualization practice I'm afraid.  If it's betterish on Saturday, steel match.  If it's betterish on sat, next wednesday may see a 90% in RFPI :)

  10. Live fire practice this week did a few things for me.

First, I confirmed that my reloads shot to shot are landing at the 1.3ish seconds - which is in alignment with what I'm doing in dry fire.  Ok, good.

Second - I confirmed that my ability to shoot dots at 5 yards is about 80% (shooting a clean dot 80% of the time.)  Cool.

Lastly - reconfirmed that my transitions on targets that are not wide apart (about 1 yard apart at 10 yards) are running a little slower .04-.05 than my splits.

So... continue to work on reloads and keep working those trigger fundamentals.

  11. Have a spare extractor - or just replace the extractor with an after market.  Getting rid of the LCI is a huge step in improving reliability.  Between those two items and a little polishing here and there the reliability at low temps went WAY up.  In addition to the other goodies mentioned to improve the trigger, I added the speed strip kit and the extended magazine release from Majestic.  LOVE the magazine release, am 'meh' on the speed strip kit.

  12. Another steel challenge match.  2 feet of snow in the bay and a high temp of about 12f.  First two stages were meh - 5 to Go and Smoke and Hope.  Smoke and hope - I did manage to pull a 1.88 for a string, but I did not do a consistent job of stopping on the plates.  5 to Go was just a mental malfunction.  For the last two stages - Showdown and Roundabout - I did a better job of prepping for each string and didn't rush.  That translated into a 9.43 for Showdown and 9.34 for Roundabout.  The stages were consistent from string to string - and when all was done, it looks like those are my first two stages with a GM aggregate for Steel Challenge.

Have been working on reloads very heavy for the past week or two - will continue on that for the next week as well - and whitewall drills.  Recovering from a bit of flu, and wife just came down with it, so don't know if I'll get to the uspsa match tomorrow.  Was looking forward to seeing if my work translated into improved performance in a match - but whatever.  Will get to a match eventually :)

  13. Both :)  5 to Go is pretty much a shoot 'em left to right.  For Pendulum I start left to right for 1@2, then right to left 4, 3, 5.  Smoke 'n Hope I do 4, 3, 1, 2, 5 - so I get some good right to left/left to right in there.  Showdown I start on the left from the left box, start on the right from the right box.  I guess that means I'm ambishooterous.

  14. Saturday Steel match hovered between -2 and 2f - decided that it was too damned cold to draw from a holster so just shot the rimfires.  Have both Ruger 22/45s working well in the cold now (that was a bit of effort...) and even with the cold turned in my best match times to date, including my first M runin Speed Option.  In fact - all of the stages were within a second or less of M for iron sights.  One malfunction for the match - unsure of the cause.  Using a red dot was inconsistent for me - my overall times for the open rimfire were slower than my iron sight by a skosh - but with lower individual string times turned in for open.  In other words - I'm faster but a retard in open. :)

Working draws, whitewall and reloads in dryfire this week.  A couple weeks out from the next USPSA match.  Prepping for this coming weekend's 3gun match - have stages to design.

  15. Did you ever have one of those shooting experiences where you just start giggling?  Yea.  Have been working on trigger control and grip in dry fire the last few weeks - finally got to the range for a live fire session and spent a little time shooting 'the dots.'  First one out of the holster I screwed up - kinda forgot everything I'd been working on.  Refocus - next three dots clean.  Started giggling during the second clean dot, since it was starting to seem 'easy.'  4th dot and a 'pft' instead of a bang for shot 6 (was also clean up to that point) and spend a few minutes looking for a squib rod.  5th dot and a 'hard' primer or maybe it's time to clean the top end - but I'm still giggling because I'm just watching the sight up/down with no suprises as to where the holes are going to be on paper.

Ah well...   also set up smoke and hope and tested out some of the ruger work I did over the break.  They seem to have an issue in the cold (it was about 3 deg f, maybe a bit lower) and I've been working on them to get them to run at temp.  Seems that my efforts are paying off.  No real difference in speed for me on S&H between my open rimfire and iron sight rimfire.  Speed mode had me at a 1.5-1.6 (with a miss or two) - match mode had me at 1.9-2.1 - which is right about where I want to be.

If you haven't ever just giggled because it's working - you should try it.  It's kinda fun....
