I'm a brand new reloader, and started with the 650. Things are going extremely well so far. I was suffering problems with powder bounce, already have the bearing kit on order Until then, slow handle rotation and putting a finger on the plate has stopped the bounce.
With 9mm, I'm seeing a bit more OAL variation then I expect to see. Granted I started off with inexpensive berry plated bullets, but still... I looked a lot closer at the insert piece in the bullet seating die station (forgot what it's called) to make sure I had the right end in place, and I did. However, it has what I would consider a rough surface finish, and the bullet may be hanging up in it's way into the opening. For grins I put a dab of oil on the surface and the next 5 rounds all came out within 0.001 of each other and then the variation started increasing back up to +/- 0.005. If I spend the time to make sure it's perfectly aligned to the case, I generally see less variation, which is what led me to the oil idea.
Is there a reason why that surface finish is so rough? If not, is there any reason I can't carefully polish it to make it smoother?
