  1. As to the safety issue even John Moses Browning thought they were a complete waste of time. His next major handgun design, the P-35 didn't have one. I tend to agree with that opinion and would love to run a 1911 with a one piece backstrap/beavertail.

If I remember correctly, JMB's original design employed a grip safety but no thumb safety, and the thumb safety was only added to meet some governmental spec for military submission.

JMB's first design submitted to the army was the model 1905 that lacked both the thumb and grip safety. It wasn't until the army demanded that they be added to the design that the 1911 was born. From everything I have read on the subject he thought the grip safety was useless. Since Patrick Sweeney is around maybe he will weigh in on the history.

  2. We decided to tell everyone to stay at the desk, since there was no advantage to moving, and if the "official word" turned out to be that the shooter shouldn't move, we could have had some invalid scores.

Actually, I saw several shooters move to engage the last two targets. I didn't really consider this a biggie, since anyone who did it that way was obviously not going to turn in a great score. More of a "built-in procedural" time penalty than anything else. I think some people were scared of the no-shoot and didn't think they could shoot over it without pulling shots low.

I agree. As I said earlier in this thread when the COF is set up exactly as it is designed you gained nothing by moving that couldn't be accomplished by remaining seated. The guys that got up and moved around wasted time and effort to do so.

  3. Right now the only way to get one is from Novak directly and if I am not mistaken it is only on their full house guns. That may change in the future but for right now it isn't really a consideration as less than 30 guns in the entire world have one.

  4. I think there is a lesson in this for all of us. That is, you never know if the guy who you are flipping off/yelling at is armed. Pick the wrong guy on the wrong day and it might not work out so well for you. Luckily for this guy you were mature enough to walk away without escalating the situation.

  5. If the stage is set up exactly the way the COF is designed you gain nothing by moving that can't be had by standing straight up or slightly leaning while seated. When seated the entire head of T-3 is visible but when you stand up most of T3 is clearly visible and considering the distance to the target is so short it makes no sense to move.

The shooter in the video did indeed shoot it out of sequence but since you couldn't see the SO in the video it is hard to tell if he was given a procedural or not. If he wasn't given one that was a mistake by the SO.

While I'm happy to concede that no benefit may be gained from moving, I'm asking about what happens if someone does? If the table is not cover, then leaving the start position is OK, and allowing the shooter to stand while engaging T3-4 seems to support that. Nothing in the procedure says the shooter must remain at the table. Lots of people have shot the stage, and I suspect more than a few have not stayed at the table; did they get dinged with a procedural? Should they?

Since Lenny checks this thread I'll let him give you the official answer on that.

  6. On stage 3, since the shooter is given the option of standing to engage T3-4, the table is not cover? Can the shooter move from the table for shooting or reloading? That is, I can see someone taking two steps to the right, from the start position, to get a clear view of T3, and then staying there to shoot and reload, if there's no cover. As long as T3 is engaged before T4 (tac priority), it's okay to move from the table to engage them?

Also, in the video, it looks like the shooter engages T4 before T3; T3 is much closer to the shooter, and the no-shoot doesn't qualify as cover, so shouldn't T3 be engaged first (before T4)?

  7. I've been there and it stinks. Trust me, it will get better with time if you are smart about it. Keep it elevated as much as possible and keep it iced. I am sure you Dr has told you, but don't be surprised if it hurts for a while. Mine took the better part of three months to get back to 100%. The worst was the first month where it hurt all the time. The second month it would hurt here and there. The third month only hurt when I stepped on something uneven.

  8. For a moment I was getting jealous of some in this thread as I love Tex-Mex and all I can find around here is lousy chain food. Then I got over it as I thought about you poor souls who don't have access to real pizza. :P

  9. rubberneck, I can see how that would happen. I'm not that concerned about it one way or the other, but my experience says that someone might have a problem with it. Like Jane says, this is a work in progress and I want to see it be successful. The rules should address this one way or the other. Keeping your first score seems like a logical solution to me.

Just thinking out loud here, IDPA might consider something like this as another way for folks to get moved up in class. Call it a mini-classifier or something. If you shoot 2 mini's at a certain level you get moved up...

Hot Brass the fact of the matter is that you could disregard both my scores and it wouldn't matter to me. Since we aren't playing for money, prizes or trophies but rather "bragging rights" I would still know what my two times were and I will know where I fall in both of those groups. There are four clubs within 70 minutes of my house. Three of the four are running the postal match in their monthly matches and I shoot at all four with regularity. Just in my normal IDPA travels I could easily shoot the match three times with no other motivation other than wanting to get out and shoot a match.

I could understand how that looks to guys that don't have the chance to shoot it more than once. I guess the best way is to only count the score from the very first match and disregard all the rest regardless of division.

  10. I see at least 1 shooter who has shot the match in two different divisions. This seems to defeat the purpose if you ask me. I guess anyone can setup the stages and practice them so it may be a mute point...

That would be me. I am not trying to get over on anyone. The fact of the matter is that I shot the postal match at PPC in CDP. The following weekend I shot the Somerset match in ESP and had no clue that they were going to run the postal match until I showed up that day. If it really is an issue I'll ask Walt Jones to disregard my ESP time which was 15 seconds faster than the time I posted in CDP.

  11. Since the COF did not mention that concealment was required, I was wondering how many have already shot this match without concealment. Some clubs adopt the "concealment optional" attitude in the summer months for everything but sanctioned matches. Even if you normally use concealment would you use it on the Anti's Cafe stage? On the cafe stage you start with the gun in the box so why concealment. Stage 2 and 4 are pretty much just a running gun fight from the previous stages so there is no secret about your gun anyway.

A club I'll be shooting at this weekend will shoot the match. How many have shot it without concealment?

All IDPA rules apply. Cover must be worn on all four stages.

  12. We used to use "baby" alot around here, and the local rule was a proceedural if you "dropped" the baby. What say ye we? If this is the case, then how high is a drop? foot? 6 inches? Remember, this stage could well be shot in a field (soft grass), hard packed/gravel, or cement surface ... (anyone shooting on a beach? :) ) so the point where it is obviously "hurting" a baby may be different from club to club.

The COF says to put the baby down behind cover. I would say that means placing the baby on the ground not dropping it from any height.

  13. The lease on my Accord expired in October and all four tires weren't good enough to pass the turn in inspection. Like you guys they were V rated tires. I bought 4 BF Goodrich V rated tires from COSTCO and with tax, tire disposal fee and installation it came out to $455.36 for all four. Everyone else wanted close to $700. It pays to shop around.

  14. I shot this match on Saturday at PPC and it was fun. The stages are as straight forward as you are going to find in IDPA. If you build them exactly as they are designed and run them according to the rule book it should be fair across the board.

  15. I suppose I should be demanding from IPSC a written apology and perhaps the stripping of the office of General Secretary from Mr. Pinto for this.

What does it have to do with IPSC? They didn't publish anything. It's his own website so he can do what he damn well pleases. He said you were hostile to IPSC. Is that a lie?

Two OBCATS guys made the top 10 list, and as a Jersey guy I can say that it really does give me warm fuzzies.

Chuck you have got to be kidding me with this comment. Stop being obtuse. When the General Secretary of IPSC generates a list of "enemies of the state" he can't pretend that it is anything other than what it is. He crossed the line and that list is inappropriate (not to mention immature) even if it is on his own personal website.

  16. Miranda, I did not attack her as much as I made an observation of her motives from her own words. I have no problem with people who don't own a gun. It is their life to do with as they please.

Now, this young lady on the other hand, goes outs of her way to say that her friends making her feel like a caricature belonging in a Cooney Island freak show was a cause in her conversion to being anti-gun. I could respect her if she could offer some noble reason why she abandoned her past other than from peer pressure. If she doesn't want people commenting on her choice than she shouldn't have written about it publically.

  17. Worst shortfall in officiating IDPA matches. Even posing the question shows this to be a problem and bone of contention. At a recent state championship this made for some hard feelings. Barry needs to clean this one up!

    Bill

Bill, my long lost twin brother, you wouldn't be talking about the stage that we SO'd together a week and a half ago. ;)

    Pete

  18. The IDPA rule book has its grey areas, but to call the USPSA rule book 100% better is a stretch. How to define cover comes up at every single IDPA match where the stage requires movement. The MD has some flexibility and I'm ok with that. What is most important is consistency -- every shooter at the match should be informed on how the call will be made and the SO(s) should call it the same for everyone. There is nothing difficult or complex about this.

It's debates like this that remind me of the strike zone in baseball. It is never applied exactly as it is written in the rulebook, but as long as the umpire applies it evenly through the course of the game than the competitors can live with it.

For instance, if during the walk through the SO tells you what is and isn't considered appropriate cover for the stage and calls it evenly I can live with it. It's when one guy gets dinged while others don't, or when the SO starts to play gotcha that it crosses the line.
