I have owned two custom Hi-Powers in my life. One was built by Novak and the other by Don Williams at the Action Works. The trigger system on the Hi-Power makes it all but impossible to have a safe sub 3 pound trigger pull. All the top smiths generally won't go below 4 pounds. When done properly a trigger on a Hi-Power is nice and quite serviceable but you will never get one of those jaw dropping, "oh my god" that is fantastic trigger pulls. The single action CZ 75 can with an EGW hard sear.

The rules aren't final yet. Who knows which way the winds are going to blow. With the number of Vang Comp shotguns floating around it seems quite silly to disallow them.

No more so than for a G17.
Full length dust covers are legal in SSP if the gun meets all the other requirements for the division. -

So the anti-gunners found a way to drive a gun manufacturer out of their state without banning them, and that is supposed to be some sort of moral victory? I wish I could say that I was as thrilled as you are about STI's stance. Seems to me they gave the anti's exactly what they wanted. The difference is that Ronnie Barrett decided not to sell guns to California LE but left the door open to civilians. STI just slammed the door in the face of loyal customers to make some sort of political statement.

From what I understand the defender isn't a model per se but it describes a series of rifles. All LMT semi-auto rifles fall under the defender label and their full auto versions are called Guardians. A 16 inch defender is nothing more than a semi-auto 16 inch barrel with M4 cuts.

Penn is probably the best fighter in the world pound for pound when he wants to be. There have been times in his career when BJ hasn't really been all that interested in fighting. If that Penn shows up, like he did in the first fight against Jens Pulver, there is a chance he could lose. If he has his act together, like he did for the Pulver rematch, he is all but unbeatable. Your guess is as good as mine which Penn will show up on fight night.

I like the large M&P backstrap - but want it without the palmswells. Does anyone make one?
I felt the same. I liked the large backstrap, but didn't like it with the palmswells.
Where would that put a production shooter? I am thinking the 2008 rules will allow for stippling, but I don't know about changing the physical shape ??
you are correct, this would be akin to a grip reduction, and would be not allowed in production even with the stippling.
I play in Limited and L10 with mine, though.
But what if the size of the large insert with the palmswells removed is still the same size, or slightly larger than the gun with the smallest factory insert? If it is I don't know how it could be ruled that it constitutes a grip reduction.

I have all the guns I need except for an IDPA SSP gun. I am sorely tempted to buy one of these and give it a go but I am worried about support, or the lack thereof, for the gun from the manufacturer. Not to mention the cost of mags, the lack of after market dodads (sights and springs come to mind) and the fact that there are no smiths out there that will tweak the gun. Still they are dirt cheap and it sounds like it has a lot of potential.

yes...Had a local guy fit them up to the factory dovetails..really worked out nice..
Did he have to mill them or did he just touch them up with a file? What gun were those Heinies made for originally?

I shot an M9 for awhile, not the A1 version..I found the mag release a little tough to get too..but nothing you can't learn..I switched my sights out..
local guy made GM with his...so they do work well..not that he didn't have anything to do with it..

I know Dave Olhasso uses a NHO magwell with Barsto basepads on his 45 XD.

That gun has some real potential. The one thing I liked about the trigger that I played with is that when it breaks it snaps and feels more like a 1911 than a Glock or XD. The total length of travel was pretty long but so is the stock XD. It is just a matter of time before someone figures out how to shorten the stroke with a sub three pound pull.

The 9MM is tapered and the 9X23 is not. You can get away with reaming a 9mm to 9X23 but you have to stay on top of the brass if you are going to load it to major pf.

Since the 2011 frame was developed by Tripp Research (before STI was officially formed) and designed by Virgil and Sandy Strayer aren't they all techincally Tripp mags.
Splashdown if you call Virgil tomorrow I bet you he could tell you more info about those mags than you are likely to find online. -
10's of thousand ? I dont think so. The only Belgium Hipowers I am aware of without mag disconnects is the few made late in WWII by the Nazis.
IIRC FN offered the practical model that came without the mag disconnect. I could be wrong.

Not to rain on your parade or anything, the one drawback to shooting a High-Power at an IDPA match is that whole "unload and show clear" thing.
You're gonna have to drag an empty mag with you all the time, insert that in the gun and then pull the trigger to drop the hammer.
Getting caught with a High-Power that has had it's mag safety deactivated could get you an FTDR or a DQ. Sorry, but them's thar the rules.
Me? I like the looks of the Browning Hi-Power, especially in a stainless version.
Browning and FN both made Hi-Powers that came from the factory without the mag disconnect. There are tens of thousands of them floating around out there and it would be impossible for a MD to know if it came from the factory that way or not because they didn't mark them any differently. In this case that rule is completely unenforceable especially considering that the rulebook says the benefit of doubt always goes to the shooter. I am not suggesting that anyone remove theirs.

18 round strings. Does that mean 18 round stages?
No. No individual string can be longer than 18 rounds. You could create one stage with three strings of fire with 18 rounds each for a total of 54 if you were so inclined.

Compared to earlier bricks from Ruger, this one ain't so bad.
Even compared to other brands it looks pretty good.
I am certainly not a Ruger fan, but I agree w/ Patrick's observation that this appears to be an improvement over the P-89 9mm I once owned. Please to see additional brand competition among (soon to be approved) Production division guns. Not sure why they put a thumb safety on it though.

The link in your signature line is also the reason I would not buy anything made by Ruger.
Punishing Ruger for the act's of the prior management makes as much sense as punishing S&W for the acts of their old owners. The fact that this new gun has 17 round magainzes should tell you that the old mentality of the two Bill's is a thing of the past.
Personally, I can't bring myself to punish the employees and the new management of company for the sins of the old owners. IMHO, it is appropriate to punish business practices that hurt us as gun owners but it is just as important to reward companies that recognize the errors of their ways. If we don't then there is really no incentive for a wayward gun manufacturer to change their business model.

Why does IDPA have to follow the crowd when developing 3 gun rules for it's own sport? In case you missed it when IDPA was established it ran counter to practical shooting at the time. I just don't understand the logic that says that IDPA should do what every other three gun match is doing. If they want to develop 3 gun rules that are in keeping with the spirit of current rulebook that's fine with me. I couldn't care less if it violates some unwritten 3 gun ethos. It won't keep me from shooting it and it certainly won't keep the smile off my face as I do it.

When Novak worked on my Hi-Power Wayne never saw it. All the work was done by Kevin Stump. If I were to build another Hi-Power the list would have three names on it. Ted Yost, Don Williams and Jim Garthwaite.
