  1. Thank you wmetzler01, I appreciate it.

Had a weird practice today. I went to the range to do 5 dills.

    Doubles at 3

    Singles at 3

    Doubles at 5

    Singles at 5

    Bill Drills at 25

Doubles at 3 was no problem. I was consistently hitting the 1 second par time or under with all As with an occasional close C.

Singles at 3 was a disaster. I was consistently 0.2 seconds above the par time with awful hits.

Doubles at 5 was a repeat of doubles at 3. It went great

Singles at 5 was slightly better, but still bad. If I made sure I got all As I was way too slow. If I shot comfortably fast I wasn't hitting As. Surprisingly, when I pushed my time to at or below the par time, I did as well or slightly better than when I shot comfortably fast.

Bill drills at 25 was ok. I was right at or below the 4 second par time. I did three reps of this drill. The first on was 4-Cs, 1D, 1M. The second was 3-As and 3-Cs. The last was 1-A, 2-C, 2-D, 1-M. I need to do some long range practice.

So what did I learn today?

    • I need to de-emphasize single target drills in dry fire and live fire, at least until I am working at longer distances. I don't think I will do any more single target drills until I'm up to 10 yards, maybe longer.
    • My transitions and draws to targets other than directly in front of me need some work.
    • I need to emphasize transitions harder in my dry fire. I need to pay special attention to my sight picture.

Time to rest up and get ready for the match in the morning. Wish me luck!

  2. I needed to take it out to polish the frame underneath it where the trigger bar rides. I don't plan on removing it again unless I decide to put an extended mag release in. I have hollow ground screwdrivers from a good gunsmith screwdriver set. They work great for this. I never had an issue taking the screw out, but I hadn't used locktite when I put it back in. I appreciate the advice on that, gun in working fine again (at least in dry fire).

  3. I appreciate the input. I took the gun apart, lock tighted that screw, put it back together, problem solved. I have no idea what the problem was. I must have assembled it incorrectly the first time. Anyway, it's working. I'll have a practice session Friday before my match Saturday to make darn sure it's working

  4. Do you think that the trigger bar is dragging on the screw? I'm a little lost as to what the problem could be. There is no reset issue at all until a magazine is inserted. Could the retaining screw possibly be pushed up after the mag release spring is compressed when a magazine is inserted? I guess I could try to duplicate the problem by pushing up on the screw while pulling the trigger.

  5. I have it fairly loose because I had read that you shouldn't make it gorilla tight. I played with the screw a little bit last night, and it seemed to reset fine for a few pulls then it would start having the issue again. I haven't put in any loctite, but if that's the fix I'll try it.

  6. Did a search and came up short. I broke my gun down to bare metal yesterday to clean it. I noticed my DA pull was creepy/stagey, so I decided to do some more polishing. I put the gun back together, and everything seemed to be fine. I don't think I dropped much, if any, weight off of the DA pull, but it feels much smoother.

Now on to the problem. I dry fired the trigger a few times and everything was fine. I put in a magazine and started doing my dry fire, and noticed that my trigger would drag on reset. I was using the CZ dry fire technique. DA first pull, then let out just before the DA reset, and pull again. With a magazine inserted, the trigger would come back very slowly. With no magazine, everything is fine. I THINK it's the magazine pushing against the trigger bar return spring. I could be way off base with that though.

All I know for sure is, magazine in = problem present. No magazine, no problem. I need to get this sorted out before Friday. Please help!

  7. I practiced the piss out of el president the other day. Not because of the classifier but because I wanted to see what 5.00 looked like. Basically I just kept trying to go faster until my splits were .2x and then tried improving accuracy. After 300 rounds, it was productive.

I will say that one of my biggest challenges was knowing how hard to squeeze with support hand and really understanding that a .2x split isn't hard at 7 yards once you get used to it.

You are aware that el presidente is at 10 yards, right?

Ben's book has goal times for a lot of distances for El Prez. You can set it up at 7, but the goal in the book is 4.8 instead of 5. His goal can be whatever he wants it to be though.

  8. why set up your live fire plan a year ahead of time? i setup 1 month of drills and then reevaluate where i am then setup a training plan for the next month ...

Great question. Two things. One is, I feel like I really need to work on ALL of the fundamentals. This plan gives me a fair chance* to work on all of the basics. Two is, I like planning ahead. Absolutely nothing is set in stone though. I'll have my first match of the year this coming weekend. Hopefully I can get some video, and I'll have more info to work with after that. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them!

  9. Haven't posted in a while. I've been dry firing every day, and seeing some improvement there. I couldn't make it out to the range last week because of the weather over the weekend. I was able to make it today.

    Dry Fire

I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing. Four drills a day for 5-10 minutes each is covering everything in the book in about a two week period. I'm happy with the dry fire improvement I'm seeing. I will try to concentrate harder on sight picture awareness this week.

    Live Fire

Today wasn't awesome. I had one run on the El Prez out of 23 that got near the par time. 4.83, but with only 48 points. It was also my best hit factor of the day though. My reloads are inconsistent, and my draw needs work. The shooting part was ok. I need to get out there one more time before the match this coming Saturday. Here's my info for today. I hope it's not too small to see.

P.S. Any reload over 2.5 seconds was bobbled and then picked up off the ground. I made the mistake multiple times of not having a mag in any other pouch on my belt.

ETA: My other drill was two 10 round freehand groups at 20 yards. The first was 5.88", the second was 7.12"

  10. If you email Glock's customer service and tell them you've worn out your springs and/or cracked your followers, they will send you new ones. I was really surprised when they sent me replacements.

  11. I'm using Bayou 124 gr RN bullets. If availability wasn't an issue, what ranking would you give these powders on your buy list? If I'm missing any other good ones, let me know.

    6-----Alliant Red Dot

    5-----Alliant Bullseye

    4-----Hodgdon HP38

    7-----Hodgdon TiteGroup

    1-----VihtaVuori N320

    3-----Winchester 231

    2-----Winchester Super-Target

You would put WST over 231? I've never tried either, what factors lead to that decision?

  13. I'm looking to have my Glock 34 recoated. It's a low round count gun, but has a lot of holster wear from dry firing. I'm considering selling it soon, and I figure this would help the looks match the round count. My goals are to maintain production legality, and have the best coating possible within reason. I would rather not pay $500 for coating. Here are my thoughts so far.

Zev removed the service from their site, but they were offering a very hard black coating for about $150

I can get the slide done with Cerakote locally for about $75

Anything I'm missing? Anything I should consider?

  14. I've noticed that people seem to carry 4 or 5 mag pouches...and I've seen no rules in the book that limit the number of magazine pouches. I assume there is no limit and everyone is basing the number of magazines on how much they expect to use on a stage, correct (along with that I assume carrying more doesn't make sense since you are just lugging around more weight).

You can have 12 if you want. The only limiter is that all equipment must be behind the point of your hip.

In USPSA, the max round count is 32 rounds. If you figure 8 shot arrays, 4 arrays would be 32 rounds. 5 mags (1 in the gun, 4 on the belt) gives you a one mag buffer. 6 mags gives you a 2 mag buffer.

  15. Here's my 124 gr Bayou data http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=206023&hl=%2B124+%2Bgr+%2Bbayou+%2Bn320+%2Bcz#entry2292466

and my 135 gr Bayou data http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=205087&hl=

Your standard load would have made minor in my SP-01, but just barely. I ended up at 4.2 gr N320 at 1.135" OAL to average 131 PF.

My Glock 34 easily made minor with 135 gr bullets at 1.125" with 3.7 gr N320. I had to load those at 1.100" in my SP-01 to make it fit, and still bumped the charge to 3.8 to make minor with a comfortable margin.

Infer from all of that what you will.
