  1. My wife wants to start skeet shooting with me. I only load 12ga so I’d like to avoid getting another gauge. She’s small, so I need a 12ga gas operated auto (to minimize recoil) no more than 7 lbs and the CZ 712 utility looks like it might be a good starting point. Since the recoil spring is not in the butt, it should be easier for me to reduce the length of pull to around 12-1/4” including a thick butt pad.

To further reduce recoil, it needs to be able to be modified to cycle my light 3/4oz 1300fps and 7/8oz 1200fps reloads. It would never see a load heavier than 1-1/8oz 1200fps (3 dram eq). Do any of you have experience getting the 712 to cycle such light loads by using lighter recoil springs and/or enlarging the gas ports?

If my wife finds that she really likes skeet and is shooting with me in 3 or 4 years, then I will consider upgrading to something more expensive. But her past is strewn with expensive things she “had to have” but ended up quickly losing interest in.

Would either the Weatherby SA-08 12ga Youth Model or the TriStar Viper G2 12ga Youth Model be a better platform for her than the CZ 712 Utility?

Which of these has the best reputation and can it be modified to handle ultra-light loads (even if that means sacrificing the ability to handle loads heavier than 1-1/8 oz 3 dram)?

I've been running 1200fps RIO Low Recoil Buckshot and slugs through mine since out of the box.

My girlfriend had never shot a shotgun before and she handled it fine with normal loads and low recoil loads (preferred those of course).

  2. Switched an same result. No feed manually. It will drop when I hit the carrier release on lifter but still no manual cycle. It does cycle while shooting......weird! Disassembled and cleaned and polished no change...

This may be a silly suggestion so I apologize in advance. But when you finish loading the tube have you been pressing the load gate release button so it will feed into the chamber?

  3. Need some input... I have begun to have some feeding issues. With the bolt forward I can load the mag tube with 8 rounds with no issues. When I charge the bolt handle the round In the tube does not come out and gets chambered. It will not cycle manually.

    Any suggestions?

Sounds like the follower/mag spring is getting stuck. I had this issue when I switched the the mag tube follower from Nordic. It would stick, so I switched back to the stock follower and the issue went away.

  4. I have a new 712 utility that does not like any ammo under 1300 fps. I email cz and they sent me a new recoil spring. the new spring is only 8" long the recoil spring in the gun is a little over 11 " . I email the cz gun smith a picture of the springs and he said the short spring is what the are putting in the 712 now. he did say it was ok to use the short spring but I have not tryed it yet. Do any of you that have 712 that were made in 2013 know how long the recoil springs are in your guns. Thanks Johnny

Do you have a picture? My recoil spring on my 2013 712 is black, not sure on the length, I'm at the work at the moment. But from memory I believe it's closer to 8" than it is 11".

  5. The difference here guys is we aren't "trying" to get the handles made, we ARE making the handles ourselves. Production isn't a question. Doug has a full service machine shop, we aren't trying something new in the garage.

Look. I realize you have a shop, that has nothing to do with it.

What I'm trying to tell you is there is there appears to be variance from gun to gun on the size and style of the stock handles, this effects how it locks into the bolt. Just because it works on your gun, there is a posibility it may not work on others. Before you kick into production, you may want to send a few out to test on other guns to be sure that this issue wasn't just isolated to mine and Kyle's 712s

I'm trying to tell you what we went through, and hopefully something you can avoid.

That's a valid point, the older models vary in other ways from the 2013's models. And so on and so forth.

  6. On a diffent note to all that still want the extended handle..your factory one can be modded to get that look/function..

I have seen this done to a benneli and what the guy did (i seen it work) was to take a small peice of aluminum pipe about 3/8" dia. and about an 1" long ,,slide it over the existing handle a then fill the remaining area around it with a 2part epoxy ..just a thought for those still wanting to run one to give it a try???

That's a good idea, like JB I'm guessing, but then you have a pretty permanent modification.
