You mean under sprung?  I thought most were going with a larger spring on the 5"?

Does the profile on the disco require some slight chamfering?

No, I'm getting barrel dip when I double tap. It feels like a 12 or 13 lbs recoil spring. I run a 10 in my 9mm single stack with the same ammo (also a Springfield). I would guess that SA starting putting in a heavier recoil spring after the issues with the 5". The disco needs some stoning for sure.

  2. I just picked up a 5" yesterday. I stripped it and did some minor clean up on the trigger track and bow. I took it out and ran 200 rounds through it with no problems (135gr SNS - 3.8gr W231 - 1.12"). The fixed sights were on at 15 yards. It's probably too early to tell, but it looks like Springfield may have addressed some of the issues with the 5" version.

It defiantly needs some tuning. The trigger is 4.5 lbs and is creepy. The grip has some really sharp edges around the mainspring housing. It's also a little over sprung and I can feel the slide hanging on the disco. One nice thing I noticed is they ditched the 220 grip safety and went with the standard.

Overall, a pretty good value for $1250 (firstline price). I'd say it's fit and finish is almost on par with their TRP line (not quite as good, but close).

  3. I just started shooting CO with an S2 OR with an SRO attached. I've read that the mounting screws (SRO to plate) have been know to shear off and should be replaced about every 5,000 rounds. Can anyone tell me what the screw size is for the SRO to the plate? I have searched and I can not find the info. I'm using the screws that came with the SRO. Thanks.

  4. I've switched to Brownells 10 round 9mm mags (which are really metalform / Dawson with a black coating). They work just as well as my Dawson mags but are quite a bit cheaper. They just have the same issues with trying to unload them.

  5. I had the exact same thing happen to one of my limited guns when I replaced a cracked grip (plastic STI). The issue on mine was the over travel on the trigger. The trigger had too much overtravel with the new grip and was pinning the connector. Once I adjust the the overtravel screw on the trigger the issue was fixed.

Having an LSI as well as the Cheely E2, I will take Cheely all day. LSI feels OK, but the mag catch fit in the frame is sloppy. If you see someone with an LSI grip that doesn't always drop the mags free, it is due to the fit of the catch and the relief for the magazine is not cut deep enough. I fixed mine, but it is fun to watch others with the mags sticking.

Can you share what you had to do to fix your mag catch?

For me, it has always been Dawson. I find them easier to seat than the Tripps or Wilson when loaded to 10.

And, at least in my experiences, the Tripps do not fall free during reloads unless they are essentially empty. It's easy to see why if you look at the way the mags are cut at the top - the Tripp has a deeper cut than the Dawsons, allowing the second bullet down to be pushed forward just enough to make the mag hang up - and not drop free.

Not a big deal if you are going to use it for IDPA, where most of your reloads would be at slide lock. For USPSA, I found the Tripps to be unusable.

This is the exact issue I was running into. 5 or more rounds in the Tripp mags and they would not drop free due to the top round sliding forward. I switched to Brownells (same as Dawson, but black) and I don't have the issue of dropping free with rounds in the mag now.

Tripp mags work well for me, except for one problem - when I try to remove a partally-loaded magazine.  The top of the Tripp mags allow the top round to move forward just enough to hang up when you try to remove the magazine.  The mag either hangs up altogether, or drops the top round out as I remove the magazine.  Sometimes it hangs up until I use enough force to remove the mag anyway, and THEN it drops the top round out.

Mostly this is just an issue at "If finished, unload and show clear", but it is enough of a problem for me that I don't want any more Tripp 9mm 1911 mags.

I don't have that problem with either Wilson or Dawson mags...

I have the exact same issue with Tripp 9mm mags. The Dawson's work great, I'm curious to see if the Brownell's mags work as well as the Dawson's since they both seem to use Metalform tubes.

  9. Springs are cheap (especially when you buy the 10 pack) and good insurance against cracking your slide if you've had any lighting holes milled into the slide. I change the recoil spring on my limited (40) 2011 every 3000 rounds, and on my single stack 1911 (45) every 2000 rounds. Its probably too often but it works out to less than $5 per month.

  10. I'm looking really hard at the Wilson Combat "IDPA" package with the conversion to a "G" De-cocker. According to Wilson's website this package is IDPA legal for SSP based on the availability of factory parts. Would these modifications be legal for USPSA Production?

    The package consists of:

    • Action / Trigger job (internal so should be OK)
    • New rear sight (should be OK)
    • Drill out conversion of front sight for fiber optic insert (should be OK)
    • Oversize factory mag release (factory part - OK?)
    • Guide rod (internal so should be OK)
    • Grips (no issue)
    • Beretta Elite II Hammer (factory part - OK?)
    • Conversion of hammer drop safety to "G" De-Cocker (factory parts - not sure at all if this is OK).

    Thanks in advance.
