  1. I ordered the Chrono yesterday, so I should have it soon. I'm gonna use the Hodgdon data and work carefully, checking velocity. I'm wanting to be between 132-135 on power factor so I have some cushion.

    VZ Beretta grips

Have any of my fellow Beretta lovers tried VZ grips out? I'm curious about a couple things if you have. Are they thinner than stock panels? Thicker? I can handle a bit thinner, don't want thicker. How about shifting your grip? When you shift the gun to reload, do they let you do it, or are they so grippy they make it hard to do that? The checkering on them seems to me to be a bit low, the factory panels have checkering all the way up to the top grip screws, but VZ seems to stop short. It looks to me like the meaty part of my left hand would be on the smooth part of the grip. Am I right about this? Thanks in advance for any help.
  3. Can I be added? Just got classified in Production, C-class #A-81499.
  4. I will have to get on that, thought they were more expensive. Okay. I managed to find data on Hodgdon's site, so I'm good for starting load. Now I will go Chronograph shopping.
  5. Okay, with all the craziness that's been going on, my stocks of compnents and factory ammo have dwindled. I have a level II match coming up in August, and I need to make power factor. Here's what I have: 124 gr BBI moly coated lead bullets HP-38 powder (WW 231's twin) Winchester Small Pistol primers Pistol is a standard Beretta 92FS. I understand the standard advice out there to start low, work up, and use a chronograph. I will work up carefully. I don't have a chrono, and don't know anyone with one, so I guess I'm gonna have to load and hope. I'm hoping some of you have a good load, including OAL that will all but guarantee I'll make Minor at the match for production. Thanks for any help.
  6. Wow, I did not expect the responses to be this lopsided! But, you've all pretty much convinced me. Thanks for all of your advice, I'll get on triple checking my gear to make sure it's all 100% within the rules, but can't think of any reason why any of it wouldn't be. Thanks again!
  7. I shot my first match last Saturday. Had a great time, loved it, will keep going to more. In August, the IL sectional match is being held at the same range I shot at last Saturday. I'm undecided on shooting it. At best, I would be able to attend 2 more matches between now and then, one in June and one in July. That would make the level 2 Match my 4th match. My rational brain (or maybe it's timid) thinks it's way too early to try to step up to the next level of the game. My enthusiastic brain thinks it'd be a great opportunity to see even more shooters that are better than me and try to learn. Added to that, there are people encouraging me to shoot the match. At this point, I am leaning to the "no" side, but I would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
  8. Just wanted to put out there, I literally had the time of my life today at Sparta. Great match, good people to be around, was great to meet all my squad mates. If the good lord's willing and the creeks don't rise, I'll see all of you next month.
  9. Thank you. I thought I was doing right, but he's got a lot more experience than I do, so I wanted to double check.
  10. I shot my first match today and literally had the time of my life. I do have a question though. I shoot a Beretta 92FS, the version with the combination safety/Decocker on the slide. One competitor told me I should be starting with the gun on safe. I thought that hammer down and off safe was allowed for this handgun. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. I'm waiting on my rule book, and when it gets here, I'll highlight the appropriate rule. Thanks again!
  11. Thanks for all the help from everyone. I'll be at the Sparta match tomorrow, look forward to meeting all of you.
  12. I joined uspsa online yesterday, but don't know if I will have my stuff here in time for the match. Would I still be able to get classified if it didn't make it in time?
  13. I think I would have everything I need for a classifier. I have a good belt (carry type) and 2 mag pouches. Thanks for the offer.
  14. If you don't mind me asking, do you have any info on this weekends USPSA at Sparta? Start time, shooter meeting, anything? I see it's on the schedule of events, but nothings up on the websites linked in your sig line. I'm wanting to go and be a spectator for this one, maybe help out the range staff if I can, really just wanting to familiarize myself with everything. Thanks for any help man.
  15. And today, I joined USPSA online. Got the e-mail saying my new member packet should be in the mail within a week. My Com-Tac holster came today too. Now I just need to order a couple more mag pouches and probably a CR Speed belt....
  16. got to try this today, worked really well. Weather hasn't been conducive to outdoor practice here lately at all, but I squeezed in a little rimfire time with a Ruger 22/45 today, shooting steel at a bit over 25 yards, 5.5" plate, then the berm drill. I could see the sight almost perfectly through the whole arc doing the berm drill, a real eye opener. I'm hoping to try this again tomorrow AM with my 9mm. Thinking the front sight may be harder to track on it vs the Ruger because it will be reciprocating with the slid as well as climbing. One thing I saw that really made me happy when doing the berm drill, that sight was going straight up and down and settling perfectly. I always figured once I learned to track it, it'd be doing all sorts of crazy stuff.
  17. Thanks guys, I'll do what you've sugested!
  18. Okay, I'm having trouble staying focused on my front sight as I break shots, which is naturally killing my chances to call my shots. I have this tendency to want to look at the target to see my hit. I worked on it some yesterday at about 35 yards on a 6" steel plate with a rimfire. When I stayed with the sights, I got hits aplenty, but so many time I wanted to look at the plate to see the hit. Specifically, I'm wondering if anyone out there has a particular drill they have used to help with this, or if it's all simply repetition and focus until the habit is broken. Thanks for any help!
  19. Thanks for the tip. I better add that I'm not in danger of dropping the gun, the difference in grip is very small. My eyes can't really detect it if I hold the gun in front of my face and look for a difference in finger placement, but my hand can feel it. This is why I'm wondering if it is nothing, or if I really just need more reps.
  20. Thanks for the info. You will probably see me at some point. I wish I'd known about this weekend at Sparta sooner, but I got sidetracked and never checked the match schedule. My first trip I'm just gonna paste targes or something, not shoot. I'm wanting to get a feel for the rules and such. Thanks again
  21. I'm looking for tips on how to get a better firing grip on the gun while it's in the holster, or maybe if the issue is just my holster. The fingers on my right hand wind up a little more "open" when I draw vs when I just pick the gun up. I get a tighter "wrap" so to speak. The only reason I wonder about the holster is I can feel the belt tunnel hit my finger tip on my right middle finger when I go to wrap my fingers around the grip. I have thought about removing part of the kydex there to get it out of the way. On the other hand, I have less than one thousand total draws in practice, so I may just need more practice. One thing to add, the difference is small, but it's something I notice in dry fire. It could all be in my head, as last weekend I was drawing and shooting on a timer, and the sights seemed to be tracking straight up and down, but I'm very new to that and may have been seeing things wrong. Tips appreciated, thank you.
  22. Thank you, but I'm down in the southern part of the state.
  23. Looks like the closest place to shoot competition for me is the World Shooting complex in Sparta. I practice at home.
  24. New member here, saying hello from Illinois. I'm really new to the techniques of competition shooting, really new. I found this forum while looking for ways to go from the way I grew up shooting, which was basically just stand and shoot, no drawing or reloading, to where I want to be. That said, overall, I've been shooting since I was around 10, so close to 20 years now, and at one time shot a little competitive trap and skeet when I was in college. I intend for IDPA and USPSA to be my new endeavor, and right now, I'm working on making sure I can draw and reload safely.
