There's a few of us shooting .40 open.

Don't listen to the nay sayers. As my name implies, I shot  38 Super for many years and got sick and tired of playing the brass game. My 40 is sweet and a blast to shoot. Have no trouble making major with my Brazos Thundercomp2. Go out and have fun. You will never regret shooting 40. I get 26 +1 with my MBX mags and have never been at a disadvantage compared to the 29+1 with my Supercomp mags. Yes, bullets cost a bit more but is way off set by the price of the brass.

Make one change at a time and test

Agree. You have been given many good suggestions to try and fix this issue. Please do ONE at a time. If you change two things then you never know which one fixed the problem. Always go with the cheapest and easiest fix first. Good luck and let us know what fixed your issue.

I think should go with the load that makes YOU most comfortable

Agree. I have to favorite loads for my 38 super. 11 gr of AA7 and 9 gr of HS6 both with a 115 gr PD JHP at 168PF. The AA7 load is a bit more accurate but dot movement is less consistent. The HS6 load hits my hand a little harder but dot never leaves the glass. Love shooting both loads but when it comes to lowering split times its HS6. Welcome back.

6moa is what I use. The dot size Is personal preference of what you see based on where you are shooting from, what you like as a sight picture.

Well said. Personal preference. 8 MOA Slide Ride for me.

Winchester or Federal primers for open gun

I use either based on availability. SR Fed or Win. Both work great at major pf.

My favorite bullets are Rainier 155 plated, Montana Gold 155gr JHP and X-Treme 155 plated (in that order).  Lead and poly coated bullets lead the comp and it's a bear to get out

zzt, I'm currently using Acme 155 gr coated in my 40 Open. If I'm careful in my loading technique I don't damage the coating and have experienced no comp or barrel leading. The two powders I like for this load are 7.2gr Pistol CFE and 9.5 gr AA #7. I do like VV N320 but find it hard to make major without the gun being violent in my hand. Love shooting 40 Open.

I agree with the one tool head being a pain, I would want multiple tool heads to make life enjoyable. In all reality, I too would only be loading 9, 40, 45. The 223 would be a possibility but hell I have a new Giraud that I've never used lol.

Bayou, you have laid out the main issue. Cost of the multiple heads. But what a beautiful machine!

They went out of production a long time ago. You can use STI mags but the will sit a little low. You can build up the mag release or get one from Canyon Creek. SPS and MBX also make Para mags. Consider giving Beven Grams a call. He may have some advice. Also, post a WTB in the classifieds.

    Good luck!

ETA: SV used to make a 170 .40 tube. Also, an STI .45 tube works also (old style)

    Thanks

I was warned off AA7 because it was dirty and the debris was abrasive.  Have you found any of that?

Hi zzt, At one time back about 15 years ago, Accurate Arms produced one (1) abrasive batch of AA7 and it was abrasive, dirty and generally bad news for barels. Since then, the production problem was identified and fixed so today AA7 is no more abrasive or dirty than any other powder. I have over 40K rounds thru my .40 and another 57K rounds thru my 38 Super. All have been shot with AA7. This is a double based powder so it is loud and blasty but, it is the most accurate power I have used and my CMore dot moves in a predictable up and down movement.

My 40 Open load is 7.3gr Silhouette or 7.2gr WAC under a 155gr bullet loaded to 1.180

Hey zzt, while I don't use Silhouette in my 40 Open, I also load a 155 gr with 9.5 gr of AA7. This gives me a 169PF. Great dot stability with this powder and very accurate. Been shooting this combo for a long time. I do check for setback about every 250 rounds just to be safe.

As someone who hasn’t researched... I have to say, there’s a pretty convincing video on YouTube from Akai about comps with some reasoning as to why their latest gen comps are working for them.

    Thanks. I'll take a look.

Of those two I pick the EGW, but I wouldn't use either.  For flat shooting I go with Eric Davis' stainless steel comp and for light weight it's Jared Drinkwater's titanium CFD comp

I found some great info on Jared's comp. Where would I go to find info on Eric's comp? Thanks

Thank you for the suggestions. I will check them out and get back with you.

  14. If you were doing a build today and had to choose between the EGW 5 port cone comp or Thundercomp 2 cone comp which would you pick? Building an Open back up gun based on existing .40 barrel.
