  1. So I'm looking to build a limited gun for Steel Challenge. I'm relatively new to the sport, but am totally and absolutely consumed with it. I already have a 9mm Steel Master (center fire open), a Ruger 22/45 with a CMore and comp (rimfire open) and now am looking to build up a limited gun to complete the set.

Trying to figure out a couple of things:

    1. 2011 vs 1911: Can't decide which one. Either has it's benefits. I already shoot a 2011 for Open so could stick with the same grip and make them feel as similar as possible. I can get grips though for a 1911 that would make it feel like a 2011 so the same frame isn't completely necessary. Mag capacity doesn't matter since it's just for Steel Challenge.

    2. Weight: Is a 2011 or 1911 lighter to start with? If I get an aluminum frame 1911 it's going to be pretty light. Not sure about the weight of the polymer frame on the 2011. Mags probably weigh about the same for both. Whatever slide I get will be sent off to get lightened by someone like Freedom Gunworks and it's the same slide on either model.

    3. Cost: 1911 is going to be cheaper to build. The frames are far cheaper, mags are cheaper, more variety for grips. Not particularly looking to go cheap, really want to build what's going to be best. Willing to spend a little extra money to do it right. However, at this point I think I'm better building a less expensive option and spending the difference on ammo and practice then on a $3-4000 full custom gun.

    Couple of ideas so far:

Springfield RO 1911 - lightened slide, trigger job, grips, I'm in about $1000-$1100.

STI Trojan LITE 1911 - aluminum frame, lightened slide, grips, I'm in $1600-1700 or so.

STI 2011 of some sort - 9mm Edge's start at $2000 so with the slide lightened I will be in probably $2500 with mags.

I can go cheaper on the RO, but will it ever be the quality of gun that a stock STI is? I would think the STI would have a better out of the box trigger and slide to frame fit. Not really sure though if it's worth the extra $500... I can do a trigger job either way, friend is a gunsmith and has the jig so not too worried about that.

Thoughts? I'm looking for some real feedback from experienced/serious steel shooters. Not just "I shoot whatever I have..." I really want to do this right and build a dedicated gun that is as light as possible and reliable. I shoot a 1911 for USPSA in 45 so that's not an option. I also have a SA1911 in 9mm but it's stainless and heavier than I like (it's also my wife's favorite gun and I think she would kill me if I lightened the slide on it!).

Looking forward to some ideas! I've studied and researched about as much as I can, now I need to know what other feedback there is from more experienced shooters.

    Thanks!!!

  2. Biggest thing I can see for the fall off in attendence is the lack of planning and scheduling. The last three or four years have been at all different times of the year, with very little notice.

Super hard for people to make plans, save money, get time requested off, and make travel plans when they dont know till a month or two beforehand when the match is.

They should be getting dates and locations out now so people can make plans.

Maybe if everyone starts bugging them with emails and phone calls they will finally get off their arses!

  3. Bob the height is set with a sight level set at 60" height, from the shooting box. When you look at a stage that is set you should be able to swing thru the center of each target without changing elevation....except for pendulum

That only works if everyone is the same height as the targets. The targets will not be level for someone 6'4" or 5'0" tall, even though all targets are 60" tall.

My barrel height is about 4'2" high and the targets are most certainly not level. Damn short people in wheelchairs:)

  4. .22 open, CF limited and CF open. Coming all the way from Alaska, might as well make it worth it! Coming down on Tuesday, have practice Wed and Thursday, shoot all three days, and leave on Monday evening. Figured I would hang out for the awards and prize table just in case...

  5. Right under the dates and where it says New Smyrna Beach. Link that says "2015 Application now available".

Plane ticket done, rental car reserved, hotel taken care of in Orange City, and application and check in the mail today!

My first big steel match. Looking forward to it!

  6. Remember it is spring break for many colleges! Was looking at places in Daytona Beach so I could walk the beach at night. Then I thought about all of the drunk college kids up partying all night. Think I will stay over towards Deland!

  7. Thanks all. Got a local mine to donate some old conveyor belt to protect the floor and cut down for hanging over the rectangle plates. Have some old tires for the circles. Will be making up some stands this week and trying them out. Will post pics or video when we get things working.

  8. Anyone running indoor steel at their clubs right now? I know it is big at some of the clubs in Europe and they have big indoor matches. I have a local club that is willing to let us try it. We are going to atart with rimfire and do some testing with it and then hopefully work our way up to centerfire.

Question is, what kind of stands are you using and how do you contain the splatter. The videos I have seen it looks like they use tires and heavy rubber. If your club is doing this, can you send me some pictures of your stands? I am sure we can come up with something, but why reinvent the wheel if there is something out there that works already!

    Thanks.

  9. After doing a bunch of research I decided to build an open Ruger 22/45 with a TK comp, cmore, and VQ trigger. Wanted the same grip angle as my 1911/2011s.

For a long time a shot an Accurate Arms 22 conversion on my 1911 and 2011 Open gun. Really liked it but hated having to re-sight in my dot on my 2011 every time I switched uppers (couldn't bring myself to buy another lower setup and dot for it). Loved it. Mags fit in my belt and same mag holders so I could practice reloads (which there is no way to do with Rugers or Buckmarks). Ran lots of rounds through it and it was really reliable as long as I kept it lubed up. More reliable than lots of other people's factory guns. Eventually though I cracked the frame completely where the slide release insert is. Still use it, but can't risk it cracking in a big match. Still use it though to practice USPSA stuff.

Don't think it matters Ruger or Buckmark, both are reliable if you break them in, cheap (completed mine cost under $800) and lots of accessories. The model 41's are awesome but a little rare and limited aftermarket options.

  10. Wondering what podcasts people like listening to. I found the Ben Stoeger (Practical Pistol Show) and Steve Anderson (That Shooting Show) ones and really like listening to the when I'm out in the shop and driving. Any others out there that I am missing?

  11. Thanks ToddKS. That's a great idea!

I think I have gotten back to everyone that has posted on here or PM'd me. Anyone else interested in it just let me know. I went ahead and made all of the targets out of 16g steel and set them up in the garage to practice with my airsoft gun. Should be good for practicing the transitions and orders if nothing else.
