  1. I cannot agree more with Flyin's take on this. IF you plan on staying in this sport, you'll be a ton happier buying yourself a reloader and building the gun food yourself. A 180 gr bullet using titegroup powder or V-V powder will be much softer recoiling than ANY standard factory load. Besides, its a feel good moment the first time you shoot cartridges that you actually made.

There are several reloader manufacturers out there. But, I'd bet that the great majority of folks use dillon reloaders. I have a square deal b which is for pistol calibers only, and a RL550B which can load rifle and pistol calibers.

  2. I am always looking for a better method to load and make ready.

Currently shooting production with a glock 34. I keep 5 in pouches on my belt and one in a pocket as a starter mag. So I grab the one in the mag pouch furthest in the back and top off and return it to its mag holder in back. I grab the one in my pocket and load and make ready, and put in the holster, wait for next command.

Am I missing something?? Is there a better method?

    Thanks

    Jerry

    Jerry,

When you talk about a better method do you mean on how to load or how to come up with a routine on what to do when you are given the LAMR command?

  3. My limited gun has neither Dawson or Bomar. I use the "KING" rear site. Looks a ton like the Bomar. It is a mental thing with me...I see the "crown" on the top of the rear site and I think to myself....if I'm gunna wear the crown, I shoot like a king....it's way overboard I know, but well...ya know.

  4. I had my daughter (10 year old) out with me last year shooting some matches. I started her on a Walther P22 pistol. She was VERY accurate with her shooting and she was extremely cautious with her gun handling skills. Most other competitors commented on how safe she was :D .

During the middle of the year, I loaded up some real soft shooting 40 caliber minor loads for a G23 pistol I had. She went out and shot that in practice and I THOUGHT she was ready to use it in a match. During the match she was having the brass come right back into her face (poor kid). I should have stopped her right there as she was ducking down after every pull of the trigger. Like and idiot, I didn't do that and it cost me my shooting buddy. 3 stages in, a piece of brass landed on her right arm and it burned her, she tried to fling it off with the gun in her hand. The gun NEVER broke the 180, but she was so traumatized by that she never pulled the trigger again. I am SOOOO bummed out. She had great form and was a very accurate shooter.

I've tried everything to get her back into shooting, but nothing helps. My ex-wife doesn't help much either as I think this was the break she was looking for, in finally winning the gun battle against me (she is anti-gun).

    Lesson learned:

DO NOT push your kids into a larger caliber until such time they are REALLY ready for it.

  5. I've had the pistol for about 1.5 years, but never shot it because of me using my limited gun.

I took a stab here and there at shooting it but never did much practicing with it. I shot my first match with it October 2005. I was able to shoot a classifer stage with it which netted me a 90.8642% from 03-06. Yesterday, I took the gun with me down to a special classifier where they had 4 classifier stages. I wanted to be classified in open so away I went. I had NO clue how I would fare with the open gun. I have a heck of a time in picking up the dot on the C more site for the first shot. After that, it is a piece of cake. It's just getting to see the dot for the first shot. My draw to first shot time is usually .25 to .35 seconds slower than with my limited gun. I'm around 1.25-1.35 seconds for the first shot, which is gunn kill me.

Anyway, I ran the 4 stages:

    99-62 73.3668%

    03-05 84.6563%

    99-10 84.557%

    99-07 90.7763

All the percentages above were from the Ohio calculator.

If they are correct, the 4 along with the 5th on record with Sedro Wooley average out to be 84.84%. HHHHHMMMMMM, darn.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the way I shot it.

I just may have to utilize this open gun a bit more this summer. Although, I don't want to mess up my chances with the limited division.

  6. I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I couldn't find a forum to stick it in so....

Just an observation I thought was kind of funny. I thought I'd share with ya'll.

I've been shooting an SVI limited gun for the last 1.5 years and I love that pistol. Recently, I began to practice with my open gun lately as I'd like to be classified in open and then switch back to my beloved limited SVI once again.

    Anyway,,,,

I put about 400 round or so down the pipe of the open gun, over a period of 2 days. On the second day I thought I'd shoot my SVI once again so it wouldn't become jelous. After the first round went off I swore my muzzle jumped 2 feet into the air :o ! I guess you don't really realize just how flat shooting an open gun is vs everything else. The limited gun always shot very flat for me as well (site tracker model), but compared to the open gun..what a difference  .

It took me a bit to get used to the limited gun once again, and this was after using the limited gun for so long.

For those of you that have never shot an open gun, it'll take just a couple hundred rounds to fully appreciate just how much a comp works on a gun.

I still like my limited gun better though....It's easier to pick up the "DOT" on the first shot than it is on the open gun.

  7. I've been looking at the top 20 list in the national USPA website and I'm noticing some folks on a class that have high enough percentages to be bumped up to the next class. Is this a situation where they just haven't had time to bump the shooter into the next class or am I missing something?

I also noticed the first place person in open division A class has only one classifier on file....is there something not right, or is it a computer glitch?

  8. I shot this as a part of a special classifier. I drew to and shot the left paper first then the right and a couple of pathetic reloads in BOTH divisions below (in one situation, I wasn't mentally all there and almost forgot what to do next...) and then mowed down the steel right to left, never looking to see if I hit them. I called the shots as I was moving the gun. If I could have only done faster reloads....

    Limited division: "B" class shooter

6.84 seconds (almost forgot what to do next reload or not to reload, that is the question...)

5.67 seconds (slow reload, and couldn't find the dot initially) I'm very new with this gun. Used it in only 1 competition since I purchased it. I'm too used to my limited gun.

  9. Saw Vogel run it in 2.39 today in Production with a Glock.

    That is insane!

I did this as part of a special classifier yesterday: I shot is from far right to far left. I seem to shoot better/quicker right to left.

    Limited division: "B" class shooter

3.09 seconds I missed the second steel, had to come back for it...

  10. I shot this one yesterday as a part of a special classifier:

    Limited division: "B" class shooter

6.54 seconds (was slow between the boxes) or was it because I didn't squeeze the trigger as quickly as I could have as the front site was sitting on the closest target.

I shot is near to far both sides. Cadence is key on this stage.

    8A's 4C's

    hit factor 8.5626

Ohio calculator puts this at 90.1325%

  12. I had the SW99 40 several years ago, and had several malfunctions with the pistol. I don't recall exactly what the problems were as it was a number of years back. I recall not wanting to keep it due to the reliability issues. I then went with the Walther P99 (yes I know Walther is in bed with S&W). While I didn't have reliability issues with the P99, I didn't care for the P99. It felt jumpy in my hands, and it was just not much fun to shoot. Having said that, I never did shoot the 9mm version which I can only assume would have less felt recoil. I opted to trade my gun in and I don't miss it.

  13. Seems to be a lot of buzz about this pistol. I picked one up for my wife, and she really likes it. I also shot it and it is a VERY FINE pistol. I can only imagine what the gun would/could do with a good trigger job, and nice sites.

  14. I own an XD tactical 40, and a CZ75B-SA. I much prefer the CZ75B. In fact, I like it so much I sent it off to Matthew Mink to get my SA converted to a double action gun. I can't wait to get it back! That CZ is a tac driver! I could use it in the IDPA ESP division, but that was it. When I get it back from Matt, I'll be able to use is in several divisions. That CZ shoots so well and has minimal percieved recoil, and points very naturally.

I'd go CZ all the way.

  15. I've tried the pair! They're the Silveroxide type (that's why they're cheaper) but they don't last as long as the DL1/3N battery (Lithium-type)

    I've settled with the latter.

Where do you dind the lithium type batteries (DL1/3N)?

  16. I wouldn't say it was a ways off. I think you look pretty darn good for being so new.

The things I noticed can be corrected with a ton of dry fire practice.

    Practice the following:

    RELOADS RELOADS RELOADS RELOADS RELOADS

This alone will save a ton of time. The rest of the game (shooting quicker) will come with time. The dryfire stuff you can do at home for FREE and it'll help your ability a ton.

It's good to have the goals you do. A positive mindset will cause you to go far! With consistent practice and performance, you'll get there before you know it. Then watch out 'kuz everyone will be gunning for you and asking YOU the questions on how you shoot so fast etc.... :D

  17. Ryan,

Your story sounds soooooo familiar,,kuz I did the same thing. I still shoot and enjoy IDPA as well, but USPSA is where it's at. I went ahead and just became a life member with USPSA right off the bat 'Kuz I loved it that much.

Last year was my first full year of USPSA shooting after having shot IDPA the last 6 years. I am a 2 gun expert with IDPA, and a higher B class shooter in USPSA. I'm a pretty good field course shooter, but for some reason I keep botching the classifiers.... <_< .

I have a ton of fun at each match, and I ALWAYS look foreword to the next match.

Good luck, and as always HAVE A GREAT TIME!

By the way, an earlier poster said it correct, it won't be long and you'll want to shoot in all of the divisions....trust me on this one..

  18. Once you break the threshold of 95%, you are a GM even if your active percentage drops below it.

So, if you attain a classification, there is no way to drop back to a "lower" rank even if your scores don't stay up to par?

Thanks for the clarification! (may be a stupid question, but,,,,I'm still new to the sport)
