My S2 liked the 147gr coated lead TC loaded to 1.155 OAL just fine...which isn't far off of max OAL specs.  However, no getting any more of those....I think they were Precision bullets bought some where around 1994, LOL.   The mold was old style with wax grooves (no wax, moly coated).  This afternoon, the mailman just brought me my 250 sampler of Blue Bullet 147gr.  Looks to be the same profile and OAL as the Precision bullets just without the wax grooves.  Base isn't quite as rounded but thankfully it's not squared.

 

I do have two flavors of 124gr, RN and TC, in this old stash...So I'll likely cook up a load for those too.  I'll be curious to see how the 124gr group versus the 147gr.  At 50yd off hand, the 147gr held in the A zone of a turtle.  25yd had about a coffee cup sized spread.  15yd was tight.

 

In the meantime, I'm still reading and researching what everyone's pet load is for their S2.  Shooter's aren't shy about sharing what they think works best so I have a lot to read, LOL.  I've ordered a few different bullet types and styles in small quantity to experiment.

 

I tend to go simple.  In my 2011 .40 loads, I had great accuracy with Montana Gold 180 JHP.  But for practice, I used coated 180gr TC with the exact same profile and bullet OAL so as not to break the bank.  Two witness marks on the powder dial and it was super easy to switch back and forth from practice to major match ammo.

Yep, I have some left over 124gr too in my stash of bullets....And will likely use those to finish up the last of my autocomp powder.  But in trurth, I like the weight of 147gr for poppers - especially when there's a stout wind, LOL.

Truncated Cone Solid Bullets are supposedly one of the easiest fed profiles? Rather than ream my Shadow 2, the solution may be to use these 147gr leftover jacketed TC's when I load for my 9mm STI Edge - which prefers a longer OAL....

 

I've done a ton of reading, and after shooting .40 for so many years, I was thinking more about pressure and wondering when too short an OAL becomes a problem.

Hey Ya'll!

 

I have 500 jacketed truncated cone 147gr bullets from long ago that unfortunately have a high shoulder but are thankfully short overall.  They are .600 in overall length.

 

While the "new to me" Shadow 2 is happy to eat most coated 147gr TC lead when loaded to  1.155 OAL (bullet oal = .675) , I'm having trouble setting these jacketed bullets up with an OAL that will plunk because of the high shoulder bullet profile.  To ensure I'm not about to make an over pressured or compressed load, I wanted to get some input.

 

After fussing with different OAL (starting at 1.125 and trying to plunk), I finally decided to seat a bullet in a spent primer case with no crimp, put it in a mag and chamber it - letting the barrel suggest an OAL .  The dummy round got pushed back as expected but the OAL came down to 1.040 !!  Definitely shorter than any minimum OAL I've seen in a manual.

 

I've searched and read and this seems like the correct math; 

0.750 (case length) + (bullet length) - ( OAL) = seating depth.

So I have .750 (case length) + .600 (bullet length) = 1.350 then subtracting OAL of 1.040 gives me .310 of seating depth.   

That's a hair over the .300 seating depth that the CZ loading gurus give as the tolerance.

 

So next I'm wondering about pressure.

3.8gr of AutoComp in a 9mm case takes .340 of case space, measured with my calipers.  So it seems that with the seating depth of .310 plus powder volume of .340, I'm right close to not having much open space left in the case depending on how thick the case base is.

 

As for that powder charge; 3.8gr is what was under the 147 TC coated lead.  Jacketed usually needs more powder but 4.0 is max.   And since these will be used for practice ammo, if they are a bit weak on PF, it doesn't matter to me.   I just don't want to make over-pressured bombs.

Not sure why this was the case...Things got changed up and added regularly.  At one point there was a pneumatic, random target presentation stage that was so challenging, Barnhart called it out as unfair for anyone B class and below.  They added a dark house one year where a flashlight was required for the stage.  Outside of the occasional "out-house" COF, I always thought the matches there were great. 
I think the fact that it was so rural without close entertainment may have impacted it's allure (well okay, not forgetting the late night at the bowling alley bar and the race cart speedway, LOL). But shooters always make their own fun so I never wanted for entertainment! The ladies of the "broad squad" during those times were also great!  I miss shooting with those women! Heck, I nursed my daughter in S&W hall doing a shoot-thru schedule one year!  I agree that PASA will always have fond memories for me!

Roy Bohmfalk's son may have a box of old match scores and such from Cooper's Big Bear Valley days and SWPL.  Roy and I had talked often about using that info to write up a "snap shot" in time from the early days.  If it didn't get thrown out when he passed, I hope to be able to retrieve that box of goodies if the family isn't interested in keeping it.

Roy Bohmfalk packed up his gear and moved on to the next stage.

 

My Coach traveled under the radar. He became Master class in IPSC when they voted on it. He started with Jeff Cooper in the Big Bear Valley days. His training partner was Albert Nichols. He regularly beat Ray Chapman. He was on a PPC team with Jack Weaver. Some where I think his name is on a SWPL (Southwest Pistol League) trophy. In 1992 he put together the first womens practical pistol team, the San Diego Sure Shots, coaching us for 2 years. And, he was zen enough sport to wear the teal and purple jerseys we chose for our team colors. He taught so many people!  Knowing him was to learn more than just sight alignment and trigger pull.  He changed my direction in life and changed who I was.

Services will be held at San Jacinto Valley Cemetary in Hemet CA April 17th at 10:30am. If you have a remembrance, picture, or story about Roy, please post it in this thread.

So FP was a no go...left a line in the nose of the bullet...and made no difference in the shaving situation (see pic).

Since the only other thing that has changed is my "once fired" brass supplier, I decided to try some new brass. And naturally, there are no shavings.

Guess I'll see if I can find someone to roller size the used brass I have.

I'll try flipping the bullet seater as I have already tried all the other info nuggets I found searching the forums before posting this topic. The dies are all dillon and the bullet is .401 (which went fine thru my 550) I have it setup with RN right now....FP coming up. Knock on wood this will be the cure. Thanks for the input I'll post if this is the fix. Well, heck...I'll post if it isn't either!

Because I was shaving off some moly coating, I removed the EGW undersize die I had at the decapping station. I put the Dillon decapping die back in place. I have adjusted the expander die as far as it will go and increased the bell at the powder die. However I'm still shaving moly coating off of the bullet about 30% of the time at the bullet seating die (and I am back to my failure rate of 4% for bulged cases). <grumble> Increasing the OAL to 1.180 from 1.165 made no difference. The cases are lubed. The dies have some lube. What am I missing here?!?!

Thanks for all the good info! Naturally, I tinkered before most of these answers came in. I ended up putting a thicker washer on the ratchet tab and giving the detent screw a good turn. I got thru another two hundred rounds without it hiccuping. But should it start giving me fits, I'm taking that sucker off.

BTW, did you know you can hold the 1050 handle with your chin in order to get the primer feed assembly out of the way so the allen wrench will reach the ratchet tab screw? Besides then you get both hands free! Let's add contortionist to my expanding skill set!

Ugh, and of course the decapping system misses the spent primer cup like a drunk cowboy spitting chaw into a spitoon at 10 paces.

Is it hooking?

Yes, that's why it stops on the upstroke. That little lever just doesn't want to stay put until bumped forward by the bottom part of the ratchet arm. Or perhaps you mean is it hooking/catching to where it stays back? It does, but not consistently. Even if you manually push it to where it should catch, it doesn't stay half the time.

Finally got my super 1050 set up and have produced all of 200 rounds. There is an issue I'm having on the upstroke. At the bottom of the downstroke, an L shaped lever is pushed clear of the teeth on the safety ratchets on the back of the press. However on the upstroke, it slips back and catches on the first tooth. I end up having to pull the handle down a hair to release the tension and then hold the lever back manually to finish the upstroke. The screw holding that lever is tight but there is still a bit of play on it. I've looked at the assembly but I can't figure out what is causing the lever to swing back and re-engage.

It's intermittent. It'll run smooth for 20-30 rounds, stick for maybe 10-20, and then run smooth again... and then stick again... etc, etc.

Any suggestions?
