  1. Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I ended up with a new CompTac Minotaur and it swallows my full sized xdm.40 no problem. Used it this past weekend for an IDPA match and the R.O. giggled every time I drew it out. Couldn't believe I had a whole gun stuffed down there! And it's comfy, too! CompTac said they would get it to me Friday and I was surprised to see it showed up a few days EARLY! And free candy! Quality is top notch and I have zero complaints.

  2. chevyoneton, with the stormlake conversion, is it just the barrel and magazine? If so, that sounds like a great plan to save some $$$ on bullets! And yes, I didn't want to spend almost as much as a whole new gun just to save about an inch of barrel/shroud length. Just wanted the smaller upper with the same capacity and full grip of the full size gun. Prolly end up with an XDS anyway!lol

  3. Starting to get tired of the holster and mag pouches that came with my XDM .40. I mainly shoot IDPA so I'm looking for a decent holster and at least a double mag pouch setup. What are you guys running? I have an IWB holster for carry, but need something decent for OWB that is still IDPA legal. What are your favorites?

  4. This might be a simple point, but while trying to rack the slide, were you engaging the grip safety? When I first started with my XDM, I thought it was locked up since I was having trouble racking the slide. Turns out I wasn't holding in the grip safety with the palm of my hand. Just a thought. Sometimes it's the simple things.....lol

  5. Been shooting it!!lol And I don't think I'll change out anything soon. So far I really like it! Second time shooting it was in a side match after our club's IDPA match. No misses and was able to set off the clock stopper steel on the first shot! Got a few buddies wanting to build their own now, too.

  6. Sorry if this has been covered before, but just saw a SIG commercial where they take a standard full size auto and swap out the upper with a compact to make it ideal for carry. Could I just purchase an XDM 3.8" upper and slide it onto my XDM 4.5" .40 to make it easier to carry? Of course with my luck this will be possible and easy to do only the 3.8" upper will cost the same as buying the whole damn pistol!

  7. What Bamboo said! I've been building custom homes since '90. We've been building a few ICF houses each year and it seems they're starting to catch on a bit more. Great on insulation, great on sound deadening, and not that much more money up front. You can easily wood-frame an interior wall to separate your storage area. If you're still wanting some double doors, that's probably going to be your weakest insulation area. You can pack the attic area with insulation (or my favorite...icynene foam!) and your walls, if you go with the ICF blocks, are already insulated. All that leaves is windows and doors. Double pane, impact glass with the argon or low E gases between the panes are your best bet. Great for insulation, great for protection. You CAN find insulated garage doors, but they are a bit pricey. But since it's a man cave, go all out and you'll enjoy it for years!!

  8. There's usually an alternate route that entails a bit more challenge but pays off in time saved. It was cool to add the urban element to it by including the roads and stairs. Go down on a set of stairs and you'll have bumps and bruises on top of your bumps and bruises! Think the worst thing that I ever got was hip-checking a few trees. Oh..and I fell off a bridge once...ouch. Finally hung my cycling cleats up when I got married. Haven't wrecked a bike since!lol

  9. Finally got around to getting this new toy to the range and man what a blast! Kinda cool building it piece by piece and it actually worked the first time!! Thanks for all the input on here, fellas. Now off to find a tactical shotgun to finish out the trio.....!

  10. Hey guys, was wondering if anyone had any insight on my buddies 1911 problem. With anything more than 5 rounds in his mags, the bullet fails to feed. Ends up jammed below the feed ramp. Of course, every time this happens, his bullet o.a.l. gets a bit shorter! When he gets down to around 4 or 5 rounds, they feed no problem. When I took his mag out, I tried to "strip" a bullet off the top with the mag loaded. Just by pushing the bullet forward with my finger, I noticed the bullet nose-dives. It doesn't strip off "nose-up" like it's aligned in the mag, leading it to jam into the gun below the barrel. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

  11. Thanks again for all the input, guys! We have a local guy that builds AR's out of a small shop in his back yard. After sitting with him and picking his brain and adding the input I've gotten from here, we were able to get one built for $1080. I didn't mind going $80 over budget since I got to hand pick the options I wanted and even got a few upgraded parts that I wasn't expecting. He already had some Palmetto lowers built with the Magpul MOE and CTR stock and cut me a super deal on one of those. We topped it off with an R GUNS upper with dust cover and forward assist, nickel boron BCG (UPGRADE!!), low profile gas block, Ranier select barrel, 13" VTAC handguard, Ranier XTC comp, BCM charging handle, and was even able to add some Magpul flip up sights! He's gonna let me put it all together under his "tutelage" so I can get used to what parts go where and how they work together. If anyone sees any parts listed above that they've had issues with, please point 'em out and I can swap them for something else. Thanks again for all the help! Can't wait to pull the happy lever on it!

  12. Thanks for the info, guys! Just the type of info I'm looking for. Intended use for this AR would be mainly paper-killin with the possibility of some 3gun down the road. (We don't have any 3gun matches close enough to my area but we DO play with the AR's and shotguns after our IDPA matches every month.) And I'm not scared of blemishes! I've got 2 pairs of "blemished" golf shoes that I still can't find the blemish on em! I'm more interested in taming barrel jump than hiding flash. And I won't be putting a suppressor on it. I've also got a nice connection to a local buddy that can cerakote once I pick my parts!

Is there a big issue with .223 over 5.56? I know if you get one, you can shoot both and if you get the other one, you can only shoot that caliber, etc.

  13. I know the knowledge level here is deeper than the ocean so I come to you for a little help. I'd like to build a mid-level AR. Something around $1000 before optics. Mid-length gas system, decent trigger, decent barrel. Where can I save some cash and where do I need to spend it to keep from "crying twice?" So if you had a grand in your pocket and you just HAD to build an AR, what's your parts list? Thanks guys!
