Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I find the challenge rather useless for any analytical purpose...I want to evaluate the rifles independently from the shooters. I don't want to have to interpret "oh, he pulled this shot" or "oh crap that wind came out of nowhere" I am vastly more interested in groups shot from a vice than those shot by human beings.
  2. So what BCG would you recommend? Their full mass carrier has serrations for the FA, but frankly, the purpose of a forward assist is to close the bolt silently. Now if you're building an SBR for home defense maybe that's an issue, but with a competition gun, we really just release the bolt forward and let it do all of the work.
  3. I did ask JP about getting it in 18, can't be done...the "ready rifles" are pre-configured. The other big point the rep at JP wanted to get across was that for 400 yard steel, I need a medium contour barrel and between the 18" and 20" med contour, the weight difference is less than 4 ounces.
  4. So looking at what's available, it looks like the JP-15 20" "all purpose" "ready rifle" comes with all of the right features. The difference between that and my choice of custom rifles is only the teflon coating, a barrel that's 2 inches shorter (I prefer an 18" barrel), and the compensator being held on by a jam nut instead of the "blended" method. is that worth 4-5 months of wait time? maybe if I were a better shot...as it stands, 4-5 months of shooting is more valuable than the customization so there it is, hopefully I'll be able to make the order next week.
  5. My primary issue is with length, not contour. If I go with JP, no problem, however if I went with LaRue, they only put rifle length gas in their 20" gun. I would be happy to start with that, but I will eventually want to bring it down to 18" or even a little bit less.
  6. Thankyou guys, that is the feedback I was looking for. I'll check out some of the companies you mentioned, but at this point I'll probably just call JP and LaRue and base my decision on whichever has the least lead-time.
  7. perhaps I should clarify before this turns into a war. I know precisely how incredible a .5 moa rifle is. I don't expect to shoot that well every day of the week. I would like a rifle that is capable of 100 yard 1/2" groups at its best. I know that is possible...I have shot groups like that with other people's rifles. Frankly, it's actually easier to do than you'd think because these AR's have so little recoil. That said, no rifle will do it all the time, and any rifle that averages out to <1 MOA is pretty much at the cutting edge... So, anybody have any comments between LaRue and JP in terms of consistency?
  8. I'm not super-concerned about the Forward Assist, it was just a casual asthetic difference I had on hand to throw out there between the CTR-02 and hte JP-15 So I'm seeing a lot for JP, and for building it myself with a Nordic barrel (I still probably prefer noveske) I would really like to hear whether anybody has gotten good results with a LaRue.
  9. I want to build my first true competition gun. I took my time getting the lower the way I like it, Geissele trigger, ACE stock, LPK from LWRC, ergo grip, etc... Now I am getting ready to buy the upper and I want to just open myself up to better wisdom before I make a choice. (and before you ask, I am sticking with 5.56/.223). From my own research I am on the fence between the JP-15 (or CTR-02...I like the receiver but I'm not sure I can do without the forward assist...) and the LaRue Stealth upper. (I thought about building an upper myself with a Noveske barrel and a LaRue billet upper, but for all the trouble, I think a factory upper from either of the companies listed above will be superior...) At this point, I'm more focused on the rifle being consistent than fast, ideally 1/2moa. I know I need to stick with 1:7-1:8 twist and I really do need to stick with Stainless (the LWRC SPR would be fantastic, but that's 500+extra $ that I'd rather spend on optics) If I had to make the choice Right now, I would go with the LaRue 20" stealth with the 13.2" handguard.I would probably get the barrel turned down to 18" and or get some weight shaved off at a later date. I like the company, and I think that rifle should function well at the line with the simple addition of a JM comp. It also gives me access to LaRue lowers which I will probably use for my next build. So what do you think?
  10. @Round_Gun_Shooter: thanks for the advice, I always clean the breech face until a solvent soaked patch comes away clean. Would you say it's necessary to pull out the extractor and firing pin as well, and clean that block? @Ausguy: Definitely seem to hear nothing but good things about Mec-Gar Mags, I'm sure I'll be happy with them even if they don't resolve the problem on their own. @JOI L: Recoil spring sounds like a definite next step even if the mags work perfectly. The stock spring is apparently a 20 lb (nice beefy looking braided steel spring). I'll try an 18 and a 16, from wolff and see how they work. I don't really want to go too much lower because factory .40 tends to be pretty hot and it's going to be another 2 weeks before I can get a reloading profile down.
  11. Hmm, Honestly I don't think Sig is the best entry level gun. They are expensive and involve a lot of peripheral cost in maintenance. (I've never shot a p229, but I love the x5 9mm, p226 Tac Ops .40, Equinox, and stainless steel elite. The alloy frame in the tac ops is great for carry and transitions, But I'm not sure how I feel about the durability.) Whatever you choose, you can probably use training and good gunsmithing to make it perfect. The best guide when you're looking at higher end pistols is to identify the good gunsmiths and custom shops in your area and curb your choices to what those shops can smith. Where I live, there is a very famous CZ custom shop that turns out a lot of high quality production and limited guns. My advice to people I know out here is to buy CZ and have it tuned up there. (there are no great sig shops...). If I were You, I'd look around on google maps for some good shops, and or ask some people at a local USPSA/IDPA club where they go and what they shoot. (most of them will probably be using polymer framed Glocks, Springfields, and M&Ps and for good reason. they are reliable, easy to shoot, and common enough to have GREAT user support). As for my choice from the list you mentioned above: get a p226 Equinox or Stainless Steel Elite. (or if you can afford it, an X5...they are worth it)
  12. I shoot a .40 cal p226 tac ops as my main weapon both in production USPSA and for carry in general (have a great OWB holster that conceals this beast even on a 130lb 6' guy like me) I've been getting increasingly frustrated by a series of failure to feeds I've been experiencing with this weapon. I clean my gun almost to the point of absurdity, lube everything, take apart the mags, brush them out, clean the followers, grease the slide rails inside and out with slide glide, and wipe a coating of regular low viscosity silicon lube onto every other moving part in the gun. This overkill obsessive practice limits my failures to feed down to 1-2 per hundred rounds. When I have time enough to practice past 200 rounds, I start getting an ftf every 10 rounds. That's flat unacceptable...In addition, The slide only intermittently locks back when the mags are empty. (that I could stand if the gun never jammed). as for model information and applicable hardware to the problem: Gun is a 2012 p226 tac ops chambered in 40, made in Exeter, NH. The mags are the 4 mec gar knockoffs that came with the gun ("made in america" and the Sig logo...). and I have not changed anything on the gun from it's factory state. (came with an SRT and a nice set of sights, so I thought smith work could wait). All of the ~1500 rounds I've fired through it in the last few months have been factory ammo (mostly federal american eagle) and there hasn't been a noticable difference between brands and types of ammo. I am most interested in an anecdote from somebody else who had a similar problem, who found a way to resolve it. Was it a mag problem? what mags finally worked? Did you have to send it in to sig? Did you send it to Gray Guns? what worked? ps: I've already got 2 new Mec Gar mags on the way, that I hope will help...I'm just trying to get a better idea of the problem So I don't have to spend as much time experimenting on the range.
