  1. I wasn't able to get the KRD 17 round mags working, so I used the MecGar 15 rounds SS mags - they work very well in my BHP. Nothing wrong with it to start with - but there are much better guns out there if you like the sport and want to be competitive. I'd suggest taking the mag safety off the gun - otherwise you can't unload and drop the hammer:( Some RO's don't like it if you stick a mag back into an unloaded gun to pull the trigger). I'm presuming (I don't ASSume any more) that you already solved the problem of the hammer pinching the web of your hand, somehow?? And, if it's an old used gun, it might have a decent trigger on it - if you ever decide to purchase a new BHP - it will have a trigger pull equal to a workout device - about 16 pounds or so:( Hope you have high visibility sights - I started with my OLD BHP which had the small WWII sights - tough to aim quickly:( But, start out with it, and enjoy - LOTS of fun to be out there shooting. I haven't shot it in a long time, but from what I remember, the trigger was pretty good on it. It still has the mag safety in place, and it has the old school Browning adjustable rear sight. The front sight is the tall post that is a cast part of the slide. So, I'm not real sure of what to do for a newer rear sight. Neither my brother or I have had a problem with hammer bite, yet. I'm sure it'll happen with competition stress, but, who knows. I'd also like him to put an extended safety on it that's alot easier to manupulate during the draw, the stock one is awful small, easy to miss. Smitty
  2. The gun has already been shot alot. When the old Man was in the Police academy, he shot #1 with it, that was 1969. Then I shot #1 with the same gun during my academy in 1992. So, the gun's been around a while, and my brother now shoots the snot out of it anyway. He likes it, and he's pretty proficient with it, so, I thought he may do half decent. We'll soon see. I need to try to find some mags, and good belt gear for it. Smitty
  3. My brother has my Dad's old Hi-Power, early 60's Belgian. He started getting interested in USPSA when I started my SS 40 build. So, I said I would ask if there was a place for him, and that gun. Thanks, Smitty
  4. Roger that! Thanks for all the help everyone!! Smitty
  5. What's the diff between the D's and the NX's? Smitty
  6. The original mag that came with the gun is a 40 mag of unknown origin. It works fine now that I got the burr out of the body and the follower moves freely. Downloading the Wilson by 1 round from 9 to 8 is working (thanks Yoshi). The first round going in still feels a little choppy, but it goes. I'll have to run the gun hard to see how it goes under what I call "firing stress", where things happen alot faster. I'm gonna definately try 10mm mags so that I have alot more leeway as far as my loads go. The 40 mag that I have is pretty restrictive where seating depth is concerned. Smitty
  7. Can't load them any longer with this mag. The Wilson mag does the same thing with factory loads. I have since discovered the issue with the mystery mag that came with the gun. There was a burr that was making the follower hang up a bit. I filed it out, works great now. I hope the Wilson mag can be made to work. Any of you that are shooting the Wilson 47D mags in a 40, do I need to do something to the lips, change out the spring, the follower? Smitty
  8. My oal is set for the mag that came with the gun. Can't load them any longer with this mag. Smitty
  9. Bullets are Berry's 180 gr plated fp's Crimped just enough to not distort the bullets No ejector contact Have not removed extractor Slide stop is brand new as of this afternoon (Extended Wilson Combat), hasn't been shot yet Gun is Caspian Race-Ready frame, Para Ordnance upper, 5", Ramped Smitty
  10. A little extra info. This pistol uses a ramped barrel, don't know if that is a factor or not. And I don't know what weight the recoil spring is. Smitty
  11. Hey Gang. Got a problem with the SS 40 I've been working on. I filled up a brand new Wilson 47D mag with 9 rounds of 40 and dropped the slide. I guess this is what everybody calls a "nose dive". The nose of the top round dropped, and rammed right into the feed ramp, and stopped. I cleared that out, and the next round did the same exact thing. Once I was past the top 2 rounds, it fed and ejected everything as fast as I could cycle the slide-perfect. I then did the same drill with the mag that came with the gun. This is a 40 mag of unknown origin, there are no markings on it other than "made in Italy". This mag did exactly the same as the Wilson. Now then, is there a mod to the mags that I need to do? I have had a bunch of people suggest the 47D as THE mag for the 40's. Help me Pro's!! Smitty
  12. Hey Gang. I'm finishing up my SS 40, and I want to re-finish the frame. Its a race-ready Caspian, and it looks like it was originally cold blued. Its kinda blotchy and thin. Anybody have any advice, or experience with the spray on, oven bake finishes? I see them in the catalog from Brownell's, and I was wondering if that would be a viable solution. Any help is greatly welcome! Thanks all! Smitty
  13. Hey gang! Just got my rig all set up, put her on the scale, and I'm half an ounce over the 43 ounce limit. I'll give you the rundown of the build: Caspian Race-ready frame - steel Para Ord upper, 5" Bo-Mar lo mount w/front post Full length guide rod/plug - stainless on both Standard slide release and safety - non extended/non ambi Mag release is a Wilson oversize - the square one Wilson Beavertail - steel Wilson flat msh - steel Grips are VZ Operator 2's - G10 Mag is a Wilson 47D What should I be changing to make weight? Thanks all! Smitty
  14. Yeah, SS and L-10 are what I'm looking to start with. I have to change a few things on the gun before I can shoot it though. Smitty
  15. I'm in Arvada. I'm a member at Colorado Rifle Club in Byers. I know lots of matches are done there, but I've been just concentrating on long range rifle stuff the last 10 years or so. The handgun stuff is all new to me as a participant. The pistol I just picked up that I described earlier seems to be pretty well built. I let my gunsmith run his hands all over it to see what the story is with it. He said its well built, and in pretty good shape. There is zero slop on the slide/frame fit-up, the sights are Bo-mar/blade, blacked out-no fiber optic front. All the guts, trigger, beavertail, controls, hammer, and arched msh, are all Wilson. The barrel is Para-Ord, it doesn't have a full-length guide rod on it, and it only has one mag of unknown origin. Smitty
  16. Hey gang, first real post from the latest Colorado new guy. I'm going to be picking up a SS .40 from my cousin tonite. What I know about it is this: Caspian race ready frame w/ Para Ordinance slide, 5". Nice trigger, beavertail, Wilson hammer and oversize mag release (the square one), and the slide wears a Bo-Mar lo-mount rear sight. Not sure whether the fron sight is FO or just a standard blade (can't really tell from the pic he sent me). Now then, I want to get into a competitive game of some sort with this pistol. I have no idea what springs are in it, what kind of barrel it has, or if the thing even shoots worth anything or not. But, I need some advice on how to set this thing up for competition, spring rates, what type of mags are the best, suggestions on kick-ass loads, and what not. I come from the long range rifle crowd, and the run and gun handgun stuff is new to me as a participant. I would also like to hear from the fellow Colorado shooters about where is a good spot for practice, and how often and where matches are held. Thanks in advance to all!! Smitty
  17. Greetings all. LONG time shooter/reloader, new to the run and gun game. I followed BE alot during his IPSC days, always interested, never got the chance to get involved-until now! Better late than never I guess. Jason Smith Smitty Arvada Colorado
