  1. 1.069"?  I've never loaded for a 9mm revolver.  For a pistol we take chamber and magazine limitations into consideration.  For a revolver I suppose the cylinder is both, how long is the cylinder?

I suppose there's also a consideration to make sure that you have enough crimp/purchase on the bullet to prevent what cartridge from lengthening under recoil.

Guilty as charged.  I have at least half a dozen various pistol powders when I'm sure I can make do with 1 or 2 lol.

Given the large number of appropriate powder recommendations (if it were me) I'd probably find a load in there that had a decent margin of safety and was supported with published load data (Alliant and Accurate/Ramshot have 9mm +P data if I recall correctly).

Look up the bullets he is using.

I misread that the HST info was pulled bullets not loaded ammo.  But this is also kind of my point, if the purpose is for self defense then perhaps replicating the approximate factory velocity is a good starting place to ensure proper terminal ballistics.  HSTs are pretty forgiving of short barrels and Lowe velocity but they are typically at the shallow end of penetration.  Going above factory ammo may further decrease penetration by increasing expansion.

I'm not saying any of the information given is wrong nor am I disapproving of the OPs intentions, I was just looking for the whole picture.

  4. Wolverine,

You've told us your goals but I'm curious as to the "Why".  I assume you aren't shooting competition, or we'd be talking PF, it's not hunting, not for Bullseye, etc.  Are you trying to run a finicky subgun?

I'm wondering if you're over thinking this.  Whatever your reasoning for NATO spec ammo different powders only give nuanced difference in feel.  Why choose to make higher recoiling practice ammo and then search out a slightly lower recoil powder?  Especially when you already have 2 powders on hand that fit the bill?

  5. It sounds like the striker is slipping off of the sear and the striker block is the only thing keeping the pistol from discharging.

Pulling the slide back resets the striker on the sear.

I think I'd start by checking or replacing the sear spring.  I'd also take a hard look at the sear/striker engagement surfaces for wear.

How many problem free rounds do you have through the M&P with these trigger parts?  Have you replaced any other parts recently (like the striker)?

  6. The general consensus is that Winchester makes the new centerfire, rimfire, and shotshells ammo for the Herter's line.  We know for sure that S&B used to make the Herter's black and red box ammo and CCI used to make their black and blue box ammo (aluminum case poly coated bullets).

Regarding the flash hole, I've seen bigger burs and more off center than posted above by just about every mfg, except maybe premium rifle brass. Lol

  7. If indeed it is out of time (no trigger loop, but USB radiuses edge on striker block) there will likely be some peening of the safety arm on the striker.

I'd inspect that first.  If it looks good, I'd install a known good striker assembly from one of your other guns.  That should help diagnose it pretty quick.

  8. I don't think it's as big of a concern compared to a 1911, but it may be possible.

To alleviate your concerns you can pick up the magazine sleeves that are meant for just this thing.  S&W makes them and I think so does X-Grip and Pachmyr.

  9. Only time I ever had issues with bullet setback (in a pistol caliber) was with a bad die that didn't resize brass appropriately.  Replaced the sizing die and I had neck tension to spare.

But to be sure we should cover the basics.

    - did you adjust the sizing die all the way down to the shell holder?

    - how much are you expanding the case mouth?

    - have you measured the OD of the bullets to make sure they aren't .355 instead of .357?

  10. Okay, found my decade old notes.  My results are different from Shakey's as I was using a different bullet (180 gr Bear Creek poly/moly coated lead TC).  Load is reliable in all three guns.  Soft shooting with SD between 7 and 18 depending on batch/firearm.

    3.1 gr TB w/ 180gr coated lead TC @ 1.45" oal

    Glock 23 (Gen 3, polygonal) - 700 fps - 126 PF

    M&P Pro 5" - 730 fps - 131 PF

    M&P Shield - unknown velocity.

For the revolver shooters out there I'll tell you I also tested lower loads in the G23 but they weren't reliable at cycling the action, not that you care.

    2.8 gr TB w/ 180 gr BC TC @ 1.150" - 631 fps

    2.6 gr TB w/ 180 gr BC TC @ 1.160" - 601 fps

    2.3 gr TB w/ 180 gr BC TC @ 1.160" - 546 fps

Also I found it works just fine in .38 SPL and not at all in 9mm Luger (semiautos).

  11. I have successfully loaded .40 S&W with TB and Bear Creek 180 TC coated lead.  Surprisingly it operated my Glock 23 (gen 3), M&P Shield, and my M&P Pro 5".

I'll see if I can dig up the load data tonight.  I think I even have some chrono numbers too.  I seem to recall it being very low SD/ED.

  12. Here's my contribution at old thread necromancy...

Overheard at a local shop last weekend.

Gun Store Clerk: Sir, I'm afraid you have misspelled a word on the ATF form...

    Dude: What word?

Gun Store Clerk: Well, see, in YOUR last name the "I" is before the "A"...

I had to walk away. Fast.

Just had a customer that didn't know if they had one or two "L" in their name.  They didn't actually know what their legal name was on their birth certificate.  I had a previous customer that kept telling me, "I legally changed my middle name to just be a middle initial when I got divorced... but I don't know if it's legal or not."

How the heck do you sign a 4473 as being true if you don't know your own name?

Also one of my favorite customers are those that have "911s".

    Customer - I need a new 911 (nine-eleven) for my collection.
Me - I do love me some 1911 (nineteen-eleven) too.  What would you like to see?
    Customer - I dunno, which 911s (nine-elevens) are new?
Me - Well we just got in another Dan Wesson Valor...
Customer - Obvious ripoff of Smith & Wesson.
Me - (puts back the Dan Wesson, grabs a Colt) How about a Colt?
Customer - You're just paying for the name with a Colt.
Me - (puts back the Colt, grabs a Rock Island) Rock Island?
Customer - Never heard of 'em, but I like the price.  Do they make a good 911?

    Etc,etc, etc...

  13. IMO, The big difference is not so much the barrel length between your two guns (as far as how it changes powder burn). The real difference is the weight of the barrel/slide. The reciprocating weight has a huge affect on how a gun cycles, as do other moving parts like the hammer, mainspring, recoil spring, and barrel link. Also, differences in fit between a barrel bushings (or bull barrel clearance) and slide to frame fit all make affect how much energy it takes.

Plus, smaller lighter guns typically need a stiffer spring to cycle correctly compared to a full size version. There are so many variables at work, especially in 2 very different 1911s.

  14. I run the ghost and ghost spring kit in my 10mm. I think the rolling trigger break is where it's at also. The increased trigger spring and the lighter striker spring have given me no issues. 2&change# pull.

Where I'd spend money would be in a fully supported barrel so that I could turn the volume up.

Which Ghost trigger do you have?

    What Gen is your G20?

Gen 3 29. I use the 4# striker spring and the heavier trigger spring. What ever the disconnect from about a year and a half ago is...is what I use.

The bulge sucks whatever the reason why. The 1911 has much better support and less bulge and better chamber dimensions. I don't think they fixed anything. I believe the chambers are left sloppy for reliability. Any agency is going to use the cases likely just once so why sacrifice reliability to appease the smallest sliver of the market?

    - Ghost currently makes 9 different connectors and we are specifically discussing just 2 of them, the "Ghost Evo Elite 3.5" and the "Ghost Pro 3.3". Do you know which Ghost connector you have? http://static---ghostinc.app-hosted.com/media/merchant/ghostinc/Page_Center_spread_comparison_WHITEV3_copy.pdf

    - Ever handled a Gen 1 .40 S&W Glock barrel? They are much different now. The 2009 barrel in the middle has a much shallower protrusion of the feed ramp, about equal to the LWD, although it has a bit more chamfer on the edges. But the chamfer isn't really an issue due to how shallow it is. We used to pay gunsmiths a fair amount of money to put chamfers like that on barrels for reliability and revolvers for quick reloading.

    CaseSupport2-1.jpg

    - This beauty of a "not fully supported chamber due to feed ramp" is from a 1911, the glorious Colt Delta Elite. I think it goes without saying that not all 1911s are built the same, so I hesitate to make blanket statements about them.

(edited to remove my portion that was accidentally added to the previous quote.)

  15. 3.1 gr of Trail Boss (yep, Trail Boss) under a 180 gr Bear Creek TC or SWC @1.145" for about 131 pf in 5" M&P Pro.

Yest it will cycle. It also cycles a G23 and an M&P Shield. But I figure you could make a similar load with Titegroup, WST, or quite a few other pistol powders.

  16. Andrew, the B16X41 are CCI 500 and the were made 1st quarter of 2016, the CCI 550 were made the 1st quarter of 2014. This would have been done at the store level. I have no way to mix primers that are 2 years apart. I would contact the store and see what is going on.

That is the funniest sh1t I have heard all day. Ever see mixed up six packs of beer at the store? Same difference.

  17. We carry WIN Ranger LEO (SXT,the old Black Talon) 127+P+. It chronos at about 1,280 fps in a Glock. Couple of the G17s made it over 1,300 fps.

Apparently Winchester thought that "+P+" was latin for "proof load"! Is that where you got the horribly flattened primer and melted headstamp 9mm Win case from the other thread?
