  1. To continue on that, and what I said earlier, I would like to see a further differentiation between the divisions:

Open: everything available; if you can carry it, you can use it other than full auto (safety? Maybe? Just a can of works that I'd rather not see unleashed on the sport)

Tac: take a middle ground approach AR: same as current configuration just limit mag capacity, if like it to be 48 but 60 would work just because of the availability of the surefire mags and I'm sure someone would throw a shit fit if he/she couldn't use it.

Pistol and shotgun kept to current configuration

Limited (and don't call it tac irons anymore because it isn't just irons):

Rifle: one non magnified optic, 'limited' to 30+1 mags

Pistol: 140 mm mag double stack, 170 mm single stack and 10+1 capacity

Shotgun: pump, 8+1 at start, no ports, no optics

I'd be flexible on the mag cap for tac but there really should be a difference between each gun in each division or else its just a watered down version of the same thing all the time. Give people an opportunity to try different things, without having to buy a 308 rifle.

  2. The desire it to have something that can do it all well out to 1000, no place to go further. 308's cool and all but not quite as sexy as the newer 6.5 cartridges. That's pretty much the driving factor for the build. Plus there's just something fun about getting into something kinda new and 308 has pretty much been done. If I were going for heavy metal and long range that'd be a different story. This is a fun build. Unfortunately, with the current climate components are considerably more difficult to get or are much more costly to get now. This will probably be a year or more of a build. And who knows I may wind up with another cartridge by the end of it since the barrel will be the last piece I get since it will be the most 'specific to rifle' part that I get. Other components will be fairly common for platform parts since the ar-10 style rifle has been around awhile and has a lot of interchangeable parts like its little brother.

  3. It's a bit of a toss up between the 260 and creedmoore. And it's going to be a semi, bolts are cool but I want it for practical competition, and stuff like the mgm ironman precision rifle portion. Plus there's just something awesome about an ar in something s little more exotic for the platform.

  4. I've pretty much settled on the ar-10 style rifles, a little easier to obtain parts and I can get most, if not all, the parts myself to get it done. Then just have the barrel reamed and profiled and get it headspaced by whomever is doing the barrel work. Unless I can just get this all done by a smith and have a completed rifle right from the get go. While the 6mmar looks cool, the lack of support from the industry at large currently is a little bit of a turn off.

  5. Would it be better to buy a built gun (minus barrel work) or just piece it together myself. I know with my AR's in the past it was cheaper to just buy the parts I wanted to begin with rather than buying complete builds and swapping parts afterward. Or would the barrel and that work defeat the potential cost difference. Not going to be a budget build, but no sense in paying more than I need to or buying parts twice.

  6. Do you know any of the shooters that will be there? If so, see if someone will let you borrow some caddies for the match or even a week before so you can practice up. A good friend and I started around the same time and the 3-gun scene in alaska was pretty sparse and we didn't know many people so we had so somewhat struggle through gear choices until we started talking to people and then found this forum. I started with ccw 6 shell caddies and it was a mistake, I either had to pull 3 then 3 or pull 4 then 2 and I fumbled a lot (funny video but frustrating shooting). Load two wasn't as widely known and not many products were out there for it so weak hand load four it was.

If I had a buddy that was wanting to start out in three gun I'd tell him to hold off on buying all the super cool gear til he had a couple of matches under his belt and borrow my (or another generous shooter's) gear, then start making some decisions as to where he wants to go; loading wise, division wise and frequency he wants to shoot and go from there.

  7. Anyone else looking for further differentiation between the tac and limited divisions, only changing the optic is a little weak. Why not have it be a true limited division across the board, limit capacity on the pistol (10+1) and run pump for the shotgun (8+1 at start, since shotguns already are limited capacity by the tube only being able to be so long). I think something along that lines would be more of a fitting gear set for the title.

  8. I am not stuck on the small chassis, a guy up here has a Grendel that's pretty badass, but I like what can be done in the AR-10's and the 260 rem and 6.5 creedmoor are wicked rounds. I'd just like to have a rifle that will be able to reach out to 1000 and can bang at 500 easy, I'd also like it if the barrel didn't get burned out really fast and from the little I've read the 308 case 6.5 variants are getting a little better barrel life. Speaking of barrel what would be a good company to get the blank from, I want to have it finished myself.

  9. I played paintball a while back and I actually did better with a mechanical trigger as opposed to an e trigger, I ran an autococker with minor internal mods and I could get 12 rounds a second it was an earlier model with a single trigger. So I don't think a shorter lighter trigger on an ar will be any trouble for me to go as fast as I want to still be able to get properly grouped pairs. There is also a reason I'm shooting 3-gun now instead of playing paintball (or airsoft for that matter). As its been said paintball is spray and pray, send a steam down the field and hope the opponent runs through it and you can hold over 150 in the hopper at a time so it won't run dry in 2 seconds like an ar would. Double trigger, no thanks, if someone comes out with a sport for AR's on who can dump a mag the faster no care as to where they hit, this might be worth a look. But until that day arrives I'll stick with my cmc.

  10. Spin drift? Which direction of rifling and a 600ish fps change would more than likely be the culprit. My jp is zeroed at 200 with Berger 70 gr VLD's and hits about 1 1/2 inches high right with my 55 fmjbt load, 1:8 twist 2650-2975 70 gr to 55 gr. 100 yd 55's, 200+ 70's I just know where to point and its on, or if I'm really wanting to be on I can just give 2 clicks on my aimpoint and its good to go for the 55 gr load

  11. I agree the load two allows me more control over what and when I load into the gun. I was able to win a stage with my 870 vs a nova (and a damn fast shooter) on an all shotgun stage that had slugs at the beginning by using load two by shooting and loading all on the move. Shoot two load two; lather, rinse, repeat. (I did go 1 for 1 on slug targets which helped)

I'm just wondering when someone's gonna come out with the HEXLOAD! Then the enevitable octaload, which is clearly superior to all other forms of loading. Aaand now I want to try it. Haha

  12. If you really want to be cheap about it get a junker 870 (I paid 150 for mine) and put a extension on it (should be around 50 bucks) and run that. There, 200 bucks and you can play. I still use this set up for heavy metal and production. Just won the Seward match in production (our version of limited division): pump shotgun, 1x or irons on rifle, 10+1 pistol.

  13. Go to a match. See what people are using. I'm guessing he knows at least one person that shoots 3 gun and of any other sport I've been involved in this is the single most expensive and the single most giving of all. If your local club is anything like mine up here, you will have an outpouring of people damn near demanding you shoot their gear. I know I get a little butt hurt when someone won't shoot my gear (what do they think they're too good for my guns!? Haha). Hell I used a friends slp for the entire Texas multigun because I changed something on my 1100 and didn't want to vet it in my first out of state match and he used my holster and mags. I'm sure if any one of our guns had gone down at the match we would have had several people on the squad (people we hadn't met til that weekend) would have offered to let us use their gear. I was a little leery of using other shooters gear at first, but after awhile I realized that most shooters are more excited about someone shooting their gear than the people that are borrowing them are... or at least I am. Anything to get more people into the sport and have as much fun as I've had over the past two years.

Plus if you borrow and save up over a couple months you'll have enough to get the shotgun you want, not just the one you can get right now. If you're in alaska and want to shoot a match I know at least a few people that would be willing to let you borrow an entire set up to shoot with, just bring ammo! (It's not raining fed bulk XM-193 anymore lol)

    Good luck

  14. I had a chance to play with two different 930 JM's and both were fine, yes a little unrefined but sturdy enough for an out of the box experience, I don't know of many other brands that can just go out of the box and be shot at a 3 gun match. One had one issue in the first thousand using all estate or winchester bulk, the other had none and was shot by someone who is 5'2" 120lbs using Remington 27s the whole time. I'm not making a case either way just that if its what you can afford to get in the game go for it. there seems to be plenty of people with stories about every shotgun out there being totally awesome 100% and someone else that says its total junk and it wouldn't run even shooting gold plated shotshells.

Benelli: is vey popular because its been the dominant gun for a long time

Versas: are kind of the new kid on the block new hotness and its gaining ground

Slp's: are a stout easy to run shotgun but here isn't much that can be done on them which for a 1911 fan is irritating

930jm: the econo shotty that is beginner ready out of the box with a 22" or 24" barrel

All have ups and downs, fans and haters and will all at some point have an issue at an inopportune time that will make you want to lawn dart it.

The canned answer to which one is try all of them and save up for the one you like the best and then shoot the crap out if it

  15. Up here we run pretty heavy/difficult shotgun targets so mod or better is pretty much a must. I like having some options though, so I keep imp cyl, mod and full in the bag. Mod is the 90% maybe even 95% choke, then imp cyl for some clays or light close steel and full for the spinners or the farther and heavier steel. I did notice that at Texas multigun I was a tad over choked for some stuff but I hit everything with authority. Lol

Also, last weekend we had one of our big matches up here and the guy I was directly competing with for the top spot changed his choke on at least two if not three stages and I left mod in the whole time and I beat him on 2 of 3 shotgun heavy stages, so I'd say choke isn't as important as some people make it out to be.

  16. I've been looking at possibly getting a prismatic for my limited 1x optic but I'm also not a fan of the circle, I know that you can get a custom reticle but does this apply to illuminated reticles? Because if it does that would be phenominal.

  17. I have an mtac and a trijicon and a buddy's rifle that I often shoot has a viper. If I were to pick which I liked best it'd be the trijicon just for the clarity of glass and the best 1x of the three but I'm only shooting out to 300 on rare occasions, i just zero at 200 and center on everything that's in the 4 moa size. I'd love to be able to mash up all three and make the perfect scope for me but unfortunately I don't own a optics manufacturing facility. The viper is a close second though and it has decent holds and turrets that are easily used to dial for distance. The 1-4 field is packed with quality under 800, hell the most popular ones I see are all 600 or less and some of those even include price of a mount.

  18. I've had a chance to run a saiga a couple of times and an akdal a couple of times both are awesome. The saiga is a little easier on the shooter but its still a shotgun, I don't like how so much has to be changed to get it to competition level and mounting optics is kind of annoying with either a side mount like an AK or a stock adapter style but still a rocking gun. I bought an akdal and payed a full 1000 less than alaska popo did with a similar amount of mags and its the firebird so I now have an extra grand in the bank. I also like the fact that the akdal is so similar to an AR so I don't need to "get used" to another system, mounted an eotech and it points like an ar but kicks like a 12ga. If money is no object get the one that suits you the best, although I wouldn't advise an xrail system because of the reloading situation (mike and jerry are in a class of their own, but Clint Upchurch uses an r&r saiga) plus they have been known to be as temperamental of not more temperamental than mag shottys. I watched two to down in a match last year on my squad (talk about frustrating) and I wouldn't want to have to rack out all the issue ammo rather than just dropping the mag and clearing the chamber and gassing it back up and moving on. The best advice I've gotten about any gear or gun buys is to find someone with one and see if they'll let you use it, don't buy three shotguns to find the one you like. That and I'd wait til next year to buy any to see how this season goes for people with both systems and use that to go forward. Or do what I did and see a good deal in the classifieds and just get one.

  19. I've been using them for a bit since I haven't had many 124gr JHPs to play around with. They seem fine I backed off the powder a touch since I had to seat the bullet deeper in the case. Haven't really put time into fully developing the load for my m&p 9 but they were 3-gun accurate which is pretty much all I use the 9 for so its probably going to be staying that way for now.
