  1. I bought a Seagate Free Agent external drive to back up my PC. I would like to store it in a different building other than my home/office in case of a fire or other terrible event.

My pole barn/garage is 100 feet from my home and would be perfect....But... I live in the frozen North...and while the building is dry---it's not heated. How could or would that effect the hard drive????

I have been told by some that the potential condensation will ruin it... others say no problem if I let it warm to room temp. before firing it up. All Seagate will say is that that type storage is not recommended.

What do you guys (and gals) think????????

  2. I’ve recently been diagnosed with Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. AAADD

This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to water the garden.

As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I head towards the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I picked up from the postman earlier.

I decide to go through it before I wash the car.

I put my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycling box under the table, and notice that the recycling box is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the recycling paper anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table and notice that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in the desk in my study, so I go into the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my checks but first I need to push the coffee aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The coffee is getting cold, and I decide to make another cup..

As I head toward the kitchen with the cold coffee, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye - the flowers need water.

I put the coffee on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers..

I put the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I put the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

    The car isn't washed,

    The bills aren't paid,

There is a cold cup of coffee sitting on the kitchen work-surface,

The flowers don't have enough water,

There is still only 1 check in my check book,

    I can't find the remote,

    I can't find my glasses,

I don't remember what I did with the car key

And I can't figure out why I've heard water running all day.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all bloody day and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail...

  3. Michigan Winters suck.... but so do Florida, Texas, and Arizona Summers..

I now live indoor in a heated box in the winter.... when I lived in Houston I lived in a refrigerated box in the summer.

Both places have 3 months a year it's not fit to be outside.

  4. I lived in Houston .....back in the late 70s or early 80's there was a 2 week period that the temp. never hit 32 and a couple nights the low was in the single digits. It stretched over the Christmas holiday season.... so thousands of yankees were "up North" for the holiday.

Thousands of homes had frozen pipes.... hell there were even city water mains frozen. River Oaks one of the most expensive (and ritzy) areas in the U. S. had no water for 10 days--- my boss lived there. His maid brought in water from the swimming pool to boil for baths.

One of my neighbors and I cruised our sub-division looking for houses with water running out under the doors or in some cases out the first floor windows.'''so we could shut off their water outdoors for them.

It was terrible because like the OP stated... plumbing and in some cases even water heaters were in the attic above the insulation. Once the pipes broke all the insulation got soaked and then the drywall ceilings on the second floor started to cave in.Some people came home to find 24" of ice in their ground floor.

  5. I've shot in many state and regionals and 2 nationals----and the Michigan State IDPA match is still one of the tops. We have a lot of IDPA clubs in the state and have had state matches annually since 2001.

The format is that one club hosts the match and then every stage is designed and staffed by a different club from around the state. They're are asked to bring their very best stage.... that and the fact that nearly 100% of the stages are run by match directors insures a well run match.

  6. Tom had been in Police work for 25 years.

Finally sick of the stress, he quits his job and buys 50 acres of land in Alaska as far from humanity as possible.

He sees the postman once a week and gets groceries once a month.

Otherwise it's total peace and quiet.

After six months or so of almost total isolation, someone knocks on his door. He opens it and a huge, bearded man is standing there.

'Name's Cliff, your neighbor from forty miles up the road. Having a Christmas party Friday night. Thought you might like to come at about 5:00...'

'Great', says Tom, 'after six months out here I'm ready to meet some local folks Thank you.'

As Cliff is leaving, he stops. 'Gotta warn you.

    Be some drinking'.'

'Not a problem' says Tom. 'After 25 years in the business, I can drink with the best of 'em'.

Again, the big man starts to leave and stops.

'More 'n' likely gonna be some fighting' too.'

'Well, I get along with people, I'll be all right! .

    I'll be there. Thanks again.'

'More'n likely be some wild sex, too,'

'Now that's really not a problem' says Tom, warming to the idea. 'I've been all alone for six months! I'll definitely be there. By the way, what should I wear?'

'Don't much matter. Just gonna be the two of us..'

  7. I can live through the snow but major wind chill just makes my old body ache.

This morning it was 8 degrees and we had sustained winds of 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph.

According to my weather service chart... thats equal to -25 degrees. Man April can't come soon enough.

  8. A few years back at an IDPA match they had your starting position on a 4' X 4' piece of treated plywood.

I took my shots but when I launched off the slippery wood my knee hyper extended to the rear.

It tore my minuscus which ended up requiring a scope job followed by a knee replacement 2 years later.

Steer clear of the treated wood ... just a little water makes it slippery and dangerous.

  9. According to the news reports.......in about 15 hours over 400,000 hunters (including me) will try to bag a big buck ( or a doe or 2 for the meat hunters) as Michigan's rifle hunting season opens for a 2 week period.

Most of the schools (other than in the big cities in the most Southern parts of the state) are closed... as are many businesses, doctors offices, etc.

Hey - - - my wife couldn't schedule a hair cut appointment for Monday--- because her " hair dresser" would be off work hunting

It's great to live in an area in which gun ownership, hunting, and many other traditional "behaviors" are considered the norm.
