I think the best thing for me is that I have a LOT of skills I need to practice. Being a new shooter I really don't know a good way to incorporate all of those skill into a training program. I would look at other really great training programs but get kinda overwhelmed because I didn't really understand the focus or exactly what I was supposed to be doing. This one really seems to click for me. I can't wait to go to Lowes and buy the stuff to build my start boxes and make my targets!

Okay. Now that I have tried Steve's book I am even more excited! I read the entire book, then practiced, and now that I have questions I am going to read it again. For practice tonight all I did was ran through 5 reps of drills 1-14 without a timer at a moderate pace (not slow motion but slow enough to make sure I was doing it correctly.) I was just trying to get a feel for the drills and the focus of each one tonight. I also didn't have correct targets. I will be making those first thing tomorrow. I felt like my practice (even though it was day 1 and I was just trying to get an understanding of the program) was well rounded and focused on a lot of skills I need to improve upon. I can not wait to try the rest of the drills and also try out 1-14 again!

Sooo, I am really excited! I got Steve Anderson's book for Christmas! I already have read a few pages and it is really cool reading stuff by him and Kyle since I know them both. I can't wait to get started with my new training plan!

15 min mag changes (eyes closed of course!) 15 min par time - draw and one shot (varied foot positions and did mix of h.a.s., surrender, and turn and draw.) Really focused on trimming off reaction time to start signal

Hahaha! I agree! :-)

I can't sleep so I am watching Shooting USA. It is the episode about IDPA. Wow! It looks really hard, but I think I would like to try one match just for fun! I didn't realize how many shooters did both USPSA and IDPA!

15 min of par time drills (draw and 1 shot) alternating targets to the right, left and straight ahead. I also varied foot placement. I noticed I was way way off at first when I put my right foot slightly forward. I need to work on that! I did half HAS and half surrender.

Okay, so I know I said I didn't think I would be back, but shooting is an incredibly addictive hobby. Despite current things going on, I was able to make it to the Monday night shoot (although with 0 practice for a little over 2 weeks) and it was AWESOME! I missed it soooooo much and I hope to be back for good now! Here are 2 of the strings. The 3rd will be on the way. Any help/comments would be welcome!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help through the past few months. You have all become great friends and I loved meeting you in person! Shooting at competitions was one of the most fun things I have ever done. Unfortunately, due to some complications in my life, I am not going to likely return. I had a great time while doing this! Thanks! Bye!

Practice 12/8/11- I feel kinda bad about logging this as a day I practiced. I only did 15 min.
-
Yep! I always do 1/2 one direction and 1/2 the other.
-
Thanks!

I started out simple. I just have been doing draw and 1 shot. If I do 15 min I spend 5 minutes on HAS, 5 surrender, and 5 turn and draw. I vary it through the 5 min by changing foot positions and alternate targets and angles to targets. If I do 30 min I just do the above 2 times.

Practice 12/2/11- 15 min par time, 15 min mag changes Practice 12/3/11- 15 min par time, 15 min mag changes I also learned how to shoot an AR! 12/4/11 match in KY.... I felt like my draws were much better, I got to shoot a rifle stage, AND I finally went to a match with a Texas star! Awesome shoot! Practice 12/7/11- 15 min par time, 15 min mag changes

Practice 12/1/11- 15 min par time, 15 min mag changes (eyes closed) This par time thing has become my new favorite hobby (aside from Texas Stars of course!) I can't wait to do a few warm up draws tomorrow then see if I can take off another 0.1 second! It is so rough at first and feels really rushed and awkward, but it is awesome when your new time starts to feel easy!

Practice 11/30/11- 30 min of par time (random hand and foot positions for starts)

Practice 11/28/11- went to Miamisburg Monday night practice. It was a lot of fun and there was a really cool port that was blocked with a moving no-shoot! I also got my first procedural! I stepped over the fault line! Practice 11/29/11- 20 of each -dry fire with focus on weak hand grip -weak hand only -strong hand only -hands at sides draw and dry fire -hands at surrender draw and dry fire -turn, draw, dry fire, transition targets, run to end of rug without looking at feet, use feet to feel for fault line Ran through belt of mag pouches 10 times- eyes closed. Notes: I need to focus on consistent step size. I have been working on counting my steps between shooting areas and even in practice I am unable to get the same number of steps! :-)

Practice 11/27/11- 20 of each- -dry fire concentrating on trigger control and sight picture -draw then dry fire surrender -draw then dry fire hands at sides Then 7ish minutes of mag changes with eyes closed. I feel like a slacker again because I missed 2 days of practice while I was out of town for the holiday only to follow up with a very short practice. :-)
-
Practice 11/25/11- Random dry fire practice and draws for about 30 minutes with the focus of making my weak/support hand have a more active role as opposed to just being there and adjusting my grip to allow for that.
-
Glad you figured it out! :-)

Practice 11/23/11- I am so psyched! I got to shoot my first Texas Star and I LOVED it! Granted I guess I shot like 200 rounds in an hour, but it was SO worth it! I will definitely proceed with caution when I meet one at a match, but it is my new favorite thing to shoot!

Practice 11/22/11- 20 (dry fire) of each: regular, strong hand only, weak hand only Practiced for 25-30 min doing mag changes with my eyes closed. I started out with my eyes open and then tried eyes closed just to see how dependent I was on looking at them even with my peripheral vision. I couldn't get the mag in without it catching. So then I decided that maybe to force myself to not depend on vision I could practice this. By the end I was running through my entire belt without any issues.

I have never heard it in regards to shooting. "Grip it and rip it" is a golf saying. As in just go for it. But it worked for you just as well.
