  1. Yes I can't remember specifically what model but its a versamax--'3 gun model' (oversized safety, charging handle, release, FO front sight) not sure specifically what they call it (it might be the tactical) circa 2014 vintage.

I got some shade for the tacti-cool Flash hider, but i just wanted a nice semi-auto i start doing multi-gun with.  Hadn't even got around to changing chokes.

  2. Its never been out of the gun.  I can slip a business bard in between the breech and choke, thats the 'distance' its moved out.

My hope is that I get a warranty repair.  Not trying air grievances, but I had just never seen anything like this--not much of a shotgun person and chokes even less.

Worse comes to worse, a new barrel (kinda expensive, but cheaper than finger/toe surgery so I count myself lucky).

  3. So I think this is the result of a choke tube working its way loose.

Factory Loads.  Muzzle has never hit the ground and my son was breaking clays right up until this happened (I was shooting (and missing))

It does look like the choke came loose, although up close the gap that appears is more a bevel in the choke.  The lighter grey is actually plastic from the wad (i think).

Mostly trying to confirm my theory that the choke got slightly loose, enough fouling built up to snag a wad and then kB.

75 rounds max through this gun with stock choke installed.

  4. I actually went through this exercise last year.  I found things like speed belts and stuff for us 'fluffy' fellas--that is the major problem.  (of course it depends on your shape--I'm pseudo normal--beer belly top, so I can do IWB or Kydex Holsster w/o issue).  No way in hell I can Junk Carry, but my sides are flat.

    https://www.shootersconnectionstore.com/Shooters-Connection-Ultimate-Competition-Belt--P4644.aspx

THat's the belt I got as I was a 56 inches measured (by the video) at the time.  Pant size was 48, but they were one of the few I found (actually only) to go above 50.  Mag pouches/holster were normal (Ghost/BOSS Comp-Tac) buy as again, I am 'straight sided' and a drop offset holster for USPSA production give a lot of side room.

That for me was the big one--the belt.  Pants and shirts--I love Duluth Pants as generally other pants get ripped when moving around strenuously. Plus they can double as casual work pants.  Shirts are just whatever I can find at 4-5X.  5XLT is perfect for me (I am fat AND tall...double slap for clothes).

Also--Yeah it sucks getting plus size gear.  But get out there and go!  Its been great for me.   Go shoot. Have fun.  Beats being miserable.  I've been there (Hell I still am)--don't let it get you down

To get to a power factor of 170ish those 135s have to be going pretty quick. Winchester white box 165s will make Major, but even those feel relatively snappy.

As others said, the factory stuff almost always seems to use slower burning powders so you get a pretty noticeable snap and recoil.

Do you do any grip strengthening exercise? I found some grip strengthening work really helped me get a good controlled, comfortable grip without having to vice grip it.

As for the thumb touching the slide, if it is irritating you or distracting it may be worth getting a slide shield that goes between the frame and the safety or a set of shielded thumb safeties that will accomplish the same thing.

Good luck and thumbs up on getting a 2011 that will handle factory stuff. It's not alwayd ideal but if you're in a pinch you know you can just go to walmart and get some white box to get you through a training session or match

I'll add it to my list of exercises.  Muscle wise I am pretty low on the scale so I could probably gain a lot from some work.

  6. Could not find the PF on those 135s most of the stuff seems to lead to a PF of just over 160.  (Like I said, I had a deal on it many years back for like .20 a round, no I am not an idiot flinging around expensive HP ammo).

My other rounds were Win White Box at just over 170 PF.

I've shot hundreds out of the Beretta 96, but as I said, I've spent the last few years on 9mm and the last year on a giant Shadow 2 in 9 mm.

To "EAT HEALTHY", you have to accept some unpleasant truths:

    1.  you have to eat healthy forever (okay, you can cheat a bit one day every 1-2 weeks)

    2.  you have to accept the fact that you will be hungry most of the day, especially for

the first week or two.   BUT, that's okay, if you think about it - what's wrong with

          being hungry ?

    3.  NO SNACKS, EVER.

    4.  no sugar, ever (okay, 1x/week)

    5.  no fatty meats (hot dogs, hamburgers, salami, liverwurst).

    6.  cut down on the cheese, butter and NO ice cream - okay, 1x /week in small amounts.

    7.  Eat whole grains (have to carefully read the label, or you'll end up with white bread

that looks like whole wheat - think Pumpernickel or Rye, e.g.)

I hear ya and for me I am actually the opposite--I really have to focus as I backslide--I had have a lot of bad influences (wife and kids) but in the end only I control what goes in and out.

I'm in a similar boat--pre-diatbetes although I have gotten on top of that.  Perhaps it is worth sharing my 'unpleasant truths' which are fairly similar but modified to deal with some issues (and come from a professional dietician):

    1.  you have to eat healthy forever (okay, you can cheat a bit one day every 1-2 weeks)

    2.  you have to accept the fact that you will be hungry most of the day, especially for

the first week or two.   BUT, that's okay, if you think about it - what's wrong with

          being hungry ?

    2.  Understand the hungry scale.  1 being 'starving' and '10' being I AM SO STUFFED I AM NEVER EATING AGAIN.  Aim to eat when you get to 3.  Avoid going over 6.  Hitting 1-2 generally sends you to 7+

    3.  NO SNACKS, EVER.

    3. Add in both an mid-morning and mid afternoon snack to keep from becoming over-hungry.  Fruit/Veggies and PROTEIN are key.  Protein gets you full.  Nuts/lowfat cheese/lean meats.  Adjust to schedule--I often skip the midmorning snack as Breakfast to lunch is 3 hours while Lunch to dinner can be 6-7 hours.  100 cals per snack.  Afternoon snack can be double (200 cals).

    4.  no sugar, ever (okay, 1x/week).  Fruits are cool though.  Apples, Bananas, Grapes, etc do not count as sugars.  You like pop?  Drink Diet.  Or sparkling water.  Or un-sweat Ice Tea (in Texas I get the stink eye for this one).  No Sweetner > Artificial Sweetener > Sugar.

    5.  no fatty meats (hot dogs, hamburgers, salami, liverwurst).

    6.  cut down on the cheese, butter and NO ice cream - okay, 1x /week in small amounts.

    7.  Eat whole grains (have to carefully read the label, or you'll end up with white bread

that looks like whole wheat - think Pumpernickel or Rye, e.g.)

    8.  Your plate: 1/2 Veggies.  1/4 Lean Protein. 1/4 Carbs.  You only get seconds on veggies.

    9.  Exercise Every Day.  You do not have to run a marathon.  30 mins of a walk at a brisk pace counts (as long as you aren't strolling).

    10. Buy a step counter.  Start a 5k per day.  Increase.  Its hard.  (Even @ 30 mins per day I struggle to hit 5k).

    11. Don't weigh yourself everyday

    12. Don't forget #11

    13. Seriously STOP IT NOW.

    14.  Number 11 leads to depression due to day to day fluctuations. KNOCK IT OFF.

    15. Take your medication before you have a heart attack.  (This means you Crazy Scientist. You ain't gonna reach 45 with that Cholesterol Level)

  8. Been a rough 2 weeks.  Lots of rain (not practice, no exercise).

Did get some livefire practice in.  Worked on locking left hand more forward (away from Body).  Appeared to help as I did not have the dreaded 'Low Left' pattern at 15 years.

Still getting a pre-ignition push/anticipating recoil.   Trying to push the gun down, especially noticeable in dry fire after live fire (aka dry fire at the range).  Improved accuracy at 15 yards.  Basically 99% A Zone hits, slow fire (range rules).  Would like to improve on this and go to 25 yards which seems to be the standard.   But also a long way from struggling at 7 yards with a vertical low-left string.

Took out new (to me) edge.  Worked on grip for this pistol.  Struggling as I think slide was beating the snot out of my right thumb.  Mags worked fine loaded to 18.  Can definitely tell the trigger pull weight is worse than my Shadow SA.  Life was beating me down so I definitely needed range time for both practice and mental health.

Exercise was a mecha-streisand fail.  For 2 weeks I busted my butt and only lost 2 lbs.  Went into a slump last week on eating and exercise.  Broke a 2 week streak.  Need to re-center and re-focus.  It may same strange to focus so much on exercise and nutrition but I actually get tired going to the range and cannot stand up through an entire match due to pinched nerves.  Losing weight will improve this and MOST of my time is dragging my large frame around the course .  The shooting is coming along.  The physical speed is not.  Tyring to stay positive--down 2 belt sizes and almost 2 pant sizes, but not losing weight over a those 2 weeks was very demoralizing.

Plan Break that mark for weight.  More Dryfire Training.  Need exercises for anticipating recoil.  That fix should get me to 25 yards slow fire accuracy.

  9. Background: Been shooting Tupperware + CZ Shadow for a while.  Finally got my act together and got an STI Edge. (I have multiple 1911s).  Went to the range to put it through its paces.  Now I have been working on my grip especially rotating my Left Hand 'forward'/thumb away from body.

I have seemed to eliminate trigger jerk, despite still anticipating recoil--thats not the point of this post.

    1. Something was slapping my RIGHT thumb as it rode the safety.  I suspect it is my gripping the gun tightly and feeling the slide moving.  This was something new as I do not have this issue on my normal 1911s.  Anu suggestions on what might be causing this?  Am I gripping to tight?  DO I just let my thumb sit on the safety and not squeeze?  When I first started my thumbs would go any which way into space on not even touch the gun--perhaps I have over corrected?
    2. Also it seemed that .40 was a lot more snappy that I remembered--especially for a big pistol like the edge.  Not sure if this is my new grip, new round, etc.  Before I could have sworn there is no difference between 9,40 and 45.  Am I just becoming more aware? Or do I need to tweak the gun.  I've shot a 45 1911 a lot over the years--never had any 'comfort' issues, but I did really notice the 40 was recoiling--we're not talking .357 mag or anything but it was a noticable step up over 9mm. (Full disclosure--I have a beretta 96 and have shot it tons, just not lately)

Also someone call the STI haters. My gun is broken.  Feeds Hollowpoints (had some junky 135 HP that were discounted years back.  Yes 135 gr hollowpoints), Flat nose, etc without issue.   Trigger is meh out of the box, but thats compared to 'My' 1911 which I have tweaked to perfection over the years.  Best shooting I've done at 15 yards in a while though.  Biggest issue was LOADING the mag as those 40 rounds don't like to slide all the way back.

  10. Sitting in one of the best firearms states in the world (Texas).  Go to my local gun show for therapy/quiet space away from the hustle and   bustle of everyday.

And then 90% of the retailers have zip ties on the guns through the barrel and out the chamber that prevent dry fire.  (Keeps the gun just out of  battery).

Revolvers are locked up so tight its a wonder anyone ever buys one at all.  Can't dry fire, can't open the cylinder.

Want to test the new M&P 2.0 trigger?  Not today you won't

What's the DA like on that SP-01 vs Shadow 2.  Good luck figuring that out.

1911 Dry fire? good luck even engaging the safety.

Bonus rant for no PCC ARs to be found.

Doublehelix is right on the money!

Since I'm partial to CZs I'll add: TSOs are the new shiny thing, but save for sharp checkering, it's basically the same as a TS, which can be had used for almost half.

This jag off is responsible for my current CZ/Tanfor obsession!  He almost led me astray form the path of the 1911.

I did end up with some NICE CZs though and toyed with a CZ/Tanfo for limited.....

That’s because you don’t lower the hammer if you’re doing it safely.

You place your thumb between the hammer and slide, hold the trigger down, and smoothly roll the thumb out.

Don’t thumb or pinch the hammer down. Use you thumb [ed] as a firing pin block.

True: Someone taught me this and it is safer (and I use/practice it).  Gun Safety Part of brain still doesn't like doing it with the finger on the trigger.  I'd rather release the hammer and get my finger off that trigger,  then roll out the thumb.

    I'm CDO.

Its like OCD but with the letters in alphabetical order like they should be.

I'm also the kid who fake picked up his fake ejected round before going over the practice fence in hunter safety.

I shot production long enough to win a state championship a few years ago, then got annoyed with the rules (was shooting a 75b) and switched to SS. Only thing I might change is a cgw comp hammer that is imho a bit easier and safer to manually decock. Not really sure if my trigger w/overtravel adjustment in that gun is cz custom or cgw. I suppose if cgw it was technically illegal.

If there is one thing I hate about the Shadow2 its decocking.  Something is wrong with having my finger in the trigger guard and lowering the hammer all the way.  It doesn't sit well and continues to not sit well with me.  At non USPSA matches I either go SA w/ safety or lower to 'half-notch' with my finger off the trigger after release.

On topic I think the CGW comp hammer were a part of this fiasco due to a DNROI ruling that made them legal because reasons.

If it doesn’t matter what one shoots, why doesn’t everyone get the cheapest gun possible and spend the rest on ammo and practice? If it is true, that is the best use of resources.

Or perhaps there is a balance. Some people shoot some guns better than others. No matter how hard I practice with some guns, I always shoot certain ones better.

I hear that argument a lot, but I think is that there is a diminishing return on hardware and at some point it plateaus. And I think that plateau is somewhere around a Glock 17 with decent sights and a "-" connector.  After than.  Ammo+training.

Disclaimer: CZ shooter who is just as bad with CZ as with M&P but a lot better 50 lbs lighter and counting.

Unfortunately we are a bunch of sheep and will go buy whatever the top guys are using regardless if it makes US shoot better or not.  I watched a high M shooter change from a GLOCK to a CZ shadow, with all the bells and whistles, for the perceived advantage then never get back to the level they were at before the change.

The unfortunate thing is Perception is not reality and most of us are willing to go spend lots of money based on perception

    THIS X 100

    People want an easy 'fix'

The fix is to train your butt off.  I'd be interested to see a true comparison where a top shooter (or even a bad shooter--its just that using for a month will probably improve their performance!) takes a Tanfo, CZ, Glock, M&P and trains for 1 month with each and compare classifier scores after that time.  I bet any differences are within the noise.  But I still would like to see it.

  16. While I have no issues with the new rules (they don't really change anything performance wise) I do see it as the endpoint of a push towards 'soft limited'. There was something to be said about a stock gun and we had a TON of people pushing the rules and then 'gaming' the rules to the point where the rules don't matter.  Since they didn't matter in the past, why should the new ones matter?  There seems to be a seriously lack of backbone in enforcement.  True things had gotten crazy as of late, but that was largely a product of various and sundry rulings over the years that made no sense.  Its not the rule changes themselves, its the inconsistent slide towards division blending of limited vs prod of which these rules are just the most recent map point.

I for one look forward to shooting my 38 SuperComp with RDS and compensator in production. (it holds 10 rounds, its just 3 magazines welded together., the comp is just slide cuts and the CMore is an approved aftermarket sight).

  17. I think the 1911 market is pretty well saturated, but it is sad to see STI pull out.  For a long time their Spartan was a steal and the rest of their lineup compared well.  Outside of the sport community I think they struggle with name recognition compared to Springfield/Kimber/Ruger/Sig.  (say what you want about Kimber, but they have a TON of product out their to the public)

Thank you 1stSgt for yours as well. You are correct, it is not the weapon (to an extent) that will make you win (it may aid) it is the shooter which is why I have no issues shooting minor until the time is right.

I once was a young man who dreamed of a custom 1911 (no such thing as 2011s in those days).  But i kept my family fed and a roof over their head.  I got to all my kids soccer games and performances.  Now I've got some extra cash and taking the plunge.  It will come in time.  Everyone used to laugh at my dumpster Colt 1991A1 or Beretta 96. But dammit they worked and I had fun shooting (They really laughed at my 9mm Makarov--until I ripped off some awesome scores in a BUG match once).

I still have those original guns too.  Still chugging along hard now at 20 years. (I did replace some springs at some point).

In the end no one gives a crap what gun you shoot, but they will care what kind of father/husband you were.  You'll be fine.

  19. If you have a big firearm and a death grip they all recoil the same.  I always wondered why everyone talked about recoil 9 vs 45.

All my 45s were big steel firearms.

    All my 9s were Polymers.

Then I shot a compact 45. Well that was different.

Then I shot a shadow 2. OOOOOooooo that makes sense now.

    Weight matters.

I also loosened my death grip.

Also I snagged a used STI for $1500.  There are better deals out there (this guy was local so its worth it to me)--save your money.
