Michael, I agree with you that the Hunter with a couple mods, like cutting to 18" and threading, would be a near ideal setup. Did you ever learn any more about any negative gas system effects of cutting the barrel to 18"?

+1 for Magpul Moe Handguards. Inexpensive (~$30-35), very light, and simple, but you can add a rail for a light if you want.
